Business Description: In 1993, after having been in the remodeling industry for over ten years, I found myself disillusioned. Although I loved the business of making people happy by helping to improve their home, I felt that the industry was living up to it’s less than stellar reputation. At the time, I was employed with one of the more reputable remodeling firms in Baltimore. They were placing more emphasis on getting the “sale” as opposed to delivering customer satisfaction. It became “promise anything to get the job, and then deliver as little as possible to protect profits.” Further, service was kept to a minimum because they applied more of a band-aid approach. This approach would temporarily mend a problem until the one-year installation warranty (required by law) ran out. Quality of products and pride in workmanship seemed to be gone by era. When the product did fail, whether due to manufacturing or installation, the finger pointing started and the homeowner was stuck in the middle. Why couldn't a homeowner find a remodeling company to perform the work they promised and stand behind that work? When a homeowner needed service on that remodeling project that they invested their hard earned money in, why did they always have to get the run around? Why did they have to pay for a service that should have been right in the first place? These were questions I posed to my wife. Her response was, “Joe, for homeowners to find that, you would have to start a company of your own.” That response launched the beginning of American Design and Build. The concept was simple; offer the highest quality windows, doors, siding and sunrooms. In addition, have each of those installed only by experts in each of their respected fields. Offer the products at the lowest possible price, and support the products, labor and materials, for as long as the manufacturers’ warranty. In other words, the product would perform as promised now and in the future and there would never be a charge for service. That was the concept in our dining room ten years ago. Others in the industry told me that I was crazy, that the service cost would put us out of business. Well, homeowners embraced the concept and referrals streamed in. These homeowners wanted their friends and relatives to “experience” American Design and Build. Fourteen years later, we no longer work out of our dining room. In fact, we recently moved from our 1200 square foot office building in Jarrettsville to our 6500 square foot state of the art showroom in Bel Air. One thing that has not changed is our original concept. In fact, our showroom is another step towards making a remodeling project with American Design and Build a unique and pleasurable “experience.” We really do believe in “restoring the pride in your home for today… and tomorrow.” I invite you to stop by our showroom today or get your free in-home estimate. Experience for yourself why American Design and Build is referred more often than any other remodeling company in the state.

Recent Review: Terry and Alex are the best of the best! Everything you could possibly want in contractors and more. Terry is highly skilled, detailed oriented, honest and reliable. He is a great communicator and super easy to work and so is Alex. What was so helpful for us was that Terry was able to draw up plans and get all of the necessary permits and provide suggestions based on his wealth of experience. His workmanship is topnotch. He doesn't cut corners and always seems more interested in doing the job right than making money. Another great thing is that while Terry could be a GC and just sub everything out, he does most of the work himself (framing, build deck, flooring, siding, window installs, etc etc) so you know you are getting his perfectionistic touch on your job at a very fair price. I also appreciated patience and flexibility, especially when we decided last minute to open up a kitchen wall and then add a huge window when he was almost done with the siding. Very grateful!

We have very strong vendor and contractor relationships, a result of our detailed understanding of construction. Our designs speak for themselves... see our website at www.ballardmensua.com. Our business philosophy is that all clients should be a reference and we work hard to make sure to see projects through. We also have a unique ability to do very large projects without tearing a house down... we save much of the house and build around it... saving sometimes 10 dumpsters of landfill (truly green). DGen Homestead Contracting
Hired David Carr (wife Brenda) to build a garage, porch, and deck. The Deck: I was delayed in getting a permit to move in due to continued problems with the back deck. The steps had to be re-done as they were not built to code. The inspectors turned it down several times, first for the space/height between steps and ground space. Also for the railing spacing and height was not built to code. I was finally able to get a permit to move in, but was told I could not use the back deck, only the front and entrances. Mr. Carr took apart the railings to rebuild the steps. He put the railings in a pile on the ground in the back yard. It was a year before he completed the railings. My permit to use the garage was given on 4/30/2007 and was my final project. My permit to use the back deck was issued on 5/5/2008 after my unground pool was installed!! When he installed the original ones that were sitting in the dirt, they were all scratched up and dirty. He would not replace them. He installed the original 4x4 vinyl covered post with new screw holes and the old holes covered with putty. I was furious! He tried to pawn off the same damaged materials from his mistakes. I insisted they all be changed. He did change the vinyl post but still would not replace the scratched railing. He also had to be called back for loose boards on the steps that were not even screwed down. Someone fell on the steps because they appeared fastened. They has the original screw holes but we're not screwed down when the steps were rebuilt. The Garage: The garage was to be attached to my house which has a very high roof pitch. The garage is much taller than most. I requested OSB be installed above for storage with pull-down steps. First, he had installed steps which did not reach the floor and then built a stand for me to step on which was 2 feet tall and the base was about 3x5. He intended I pull out this base each time I used the stairs so the steps would rest on this base. He hid it from the inspectors on the first visit. It was very unsafe and I brought it to the inspectors attention and insisted on getting steps the correct height. He installed windows in the garage with broken corners because they had been dropped. He attempted to glue on the broken corners. I informed him this was not acceptable and he argued with me "because I had a corner broken on a window in my home." Irrelevant. An issue with another contractor. They were replaced. The paint on the back doorframe washed off within a couple of months and he did not want to repaint it, but it was finally done after my subsequent complaints. Many corrections were done on these projects because of reporting it to the BBB and the Delaware Department of Justice. A couple of years after living in my house, we were hit with a large snowstorm. The snow was melting and leaking into my garage where it joined the house. I contacted Mr. Carr as it clearly was a building issue and he informed me there is no warranty on the garage!! I had to hire a contractor to repair the roof at the garage and house joint. I remarried two years ago and my husband has fixed many other issues with Mr. Carr's work. Several pieces of metal facing has blown off when windy, clearly substandard work. More recently, during a storm with 50 mph winds, he noticed the whole back wall of the garage was moving to and fro. He said it should have been connected to the trusses and other wood and it was not. It was a free-standing 24 foot wide wall and approximately 20 feet tall and only attached on the corners, roof, and floor. My husband repaired it and attached it many times across the 24' span. The Porch The contract specified the porch was to be vinyl and all boards were to be "wrapped"in white facing. Along the front wall of the porch roof there were boards exposed and not wrapped. Mr. Carr cheaply applied a piece of metal like a piece of tape, nailing it across the whole length. He would not fix it and this was another issue I raised to the BBB etc. he finally did come out a couple of years ago and fix one of the exposed boards but there are 2 others that have never been fixed. Hand railings were put in so loose that if you hung onto them, they pulled out. These were eventually replaced. The trim on the rails was not cut on an angle correctly so it would be flush with the 4x4 post. It looks cheap and substandard and was never repaired. He used 4" boards around the bottom of the roof frame and then put on 6" trim which hangs over, falls down, and looks totally stupid. Never fixed. Also to mention base of porch is poured concrete and concrete blocks. Noted many cracks in the layers of blocks. One large crack exist at the corner which is .19 inches (approx 1/5"). Mr. Carr was paid in 7 increments for all projects. When they were almost done and had mostly the repairs left to do, he pleaded with me to pay him the balance and said his family was having difficulty and he really needed the money. He assured me he would correct all repairs. I, like a dummy, felt sorry for him and gave him the balance. Hardly ever seen him since. Most repairs were on me. I did file a BBB complaint and he stated he would finish the repairs. He did some but never finished. I had also filed and a complaint to the Department of Justice Consumer Protection in October 2007. They responded 11/01/2007 and I filed a form for them to contact the business. On February 1, 2008 they wrote to Homestead General Contracting to enforce the provisions of the Delaware Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Trade Practices Act. On February 19, 2008, the CPU again wrote to Homestead informing them they had 10 days to respond and nothing was received. Mr Carr responded on 2/19/2008 and said he "will work to resolve this matter, however please note in the Job Proposal the last payment made was "upon completion." If Miss Mitchell felt the job was not complete the last payment should not have been made ". How ignorant after he pleaded so badly because he needed the funds. I refiled another BBB complaint in late 2012 as he has never finished all the repairs and most has been repaired by my new husband at my expense. Others still remain and he has not come back like he said he would. Never use him or trust his word.

AAccessible Home Builders Inc
From initial contact thru the year warranty punch list, our experience with Accessible Home Builders, when building our home, was nothing short of exceptional. Dale spent a lot of time helping us design the home for our needs, with our desires and to our tastes, giving advice when we strayed and silent when he knew it was the way we wanted it to be. The detailed proposals and contract meant we knew just what we were getting and that there would be no surprises. The construction was on schedule, built by craftsman and with attention to detail. Our crawlspace is dry, our floors do not bounce, our home is energy efficient and there were no drywall cracks, a testament to Scott’s guidance and knowledge of the building sciences. Any glitches were handled. Period. Without fan fair or finger pointing. The building of our new home was truly an enjoyable, stress free process and we would do it again. DBrooks & Palmer Custom Homes LLC
They build a house for you, but he had a personal relationship with the bank and he knew all our finances.  Once during our dealings he raised his voice and talked to me like a child. I did not like that.  I felt uncomfortable.  There was a lack of professionalism. He gave me a reasonable quote, but we were trying to go cheaper at the time.

Excellent. Extremely professional company and all workers were neat, careful, hard working and polite. Job was done when scheduled and completed on time. My house looks brand new with the new roof. I cannot say enough about how pleased I am with the work they did, the way everything was handled and I highly recommend Henry and his team to anyone who needs roofing done. In fact, we want this company to build our next house and are going to start searching for property right away. Kudos Atlantic Coast Builders!! And thank you Angie's List for finding them for us.

FDeshields Construction
To be honest its still not done they have never come out and fixed the weather stripping on the Garage doors like they were supposed to. Found out that all there employees are private contractors not by choice but this way they can work a Eight hour day and only make 45.00 dollars. Troy Deshields Makes them go out and get business licenses so he can claim they are private contractors. All his employees except one was told to get licenses or they were fired. Talked to his employees when they were here building. Never properly back filled the building now ever time it rains i have holes under the concrete.Found out today that the bolts holding the 2by10 that hold up the roof werent even finger tight.I would not suggest using this construction company for anything .

FCartwright Concrete Construction
Construction was to start on June 1 and to be completed by the end of June.  After paying $12000.00 to start project did not have site prep and footings dug until 6/29.  Work ceased for three weeks when the foundation was finally started after many phone calls and multiple excuses from contractor as to why not working on project.  Foundation finished over a week later.  Work stopped for a week and a half.  More phone calls to get Framing started and more creative excuses from contractor.  Another three weeks to complete the framing.  Another work stoppage for two weeks.  Again more phone calls to get the metal roof, siding and doors installed and more excuses (multiple illnesses in the family and dog, death, storm damage at in-law, running errands for adult son, crew not wanting to work, etc.)   Finally completed on 9/18/12.  What should have been a month long project turned into a four month project.

FCartwright Concrete Construction
He failed terribly. He was in a hurry to start, so he tore down my shed instead of waiting for me to move it for free. He cleared the grass for the building and had fill dirt delivered. I paid him 30% up front, had to nag him to come and get started. It took well over a year and in the end, I had to hire other sub contractors to finish the job. I filed in small claims court and won, he owes me over $2000 plus interest, but he is a dead beat, so there is no way to collect the money. He talks a good game and does good work, but he is broke, unreliable, and doesn't care about you or your money. Stay away from him at all cost.

FGARRISON'S CUSTOM HOMES
Estimate provided for the work was $70,000-80,000 but upon 'near' completion I was handed an invoice for over $150,000. Work was never completed, I was billed for material and work done on other projects of theirs, they failed to live up to their "warranty" and refused to complete the work. I withheld approximately $5,000 for punch list items and to retaliate, Jeff Garrison, attempted to file a mechanics lien on my property and filed a lawsuit. Their subs never completed the work, work that was done was shotty and needed to be redone, countertops cut crooked, HVAC not installed correctly, exterior painting/caulking never complete and their mason installed a patio which is graded incorrectly, Then to add insult to injury, Jeff Garrison sends me threatening text messages and emails claiming he wants to destroy me... I wouldn't let Jeff Garrison, Garrison Homes, or their sub contractors build a bird house for me going forward...
