Recent Review: They did an outstanding job.  The owner of the company was there for that job and he was very patient with me,  I asked a lot of questions.  This is where I learned about the program they offered and signed up because they did a great job.  They were very professional.

Recent Review: Made contact through Angieslist via email on 8/20/14. I received a call back within 30 minutes. I scheduled the work for the the morning of 8/21/14. Date and time was confirmed. Jeff Davis the Plumber who did the install was EXCELLENT! He call early in the AM, got directions to my home. He arrived promptly. Jeff is an excellent Plumber. I will definitely use First Class in the future. In fact, I am in the process of contacting them about an install of a furnace humidifier.

Recent Review: Adam's initial visit identified potential problems to be detailed after a plumber did work to replace a corroded shut off valve.  When the plumber was finished, Adam investigated the problem and provided a detailed estimate that included a description of the conditions that led to the problem.  Adam and his co-worker arrived on time for each visit and explained all work to me before doing it, then showed me the finished work afterward.  Adam also discussed options for whole house humidifying,  benefits and drawbacks, with no pressure to purchase anything. Adam came highly recommended from two friends, so I did not get estimates from anyone else.  A fencing contractor doing work on my house at the same time as Adam, also recommended him highly.

North Star Inc
Recent Review: Let me preface that my home was built in 1998 and the builder used "duct board" for the heating and air-conditioning duct and returns, which unfortunately I had no knowledge of until this year. The main supply to the furnace was not sealed nor attached properly to the furnace wall. The original HVAC contractor also inappropriately installed a humidifier within the duct board main supply. The existing duct board became rancid with dirt on the inside due to improper installation. North Star technicians removed existing duct, replaced certain existing boots, used existing registers/grilles wherever possible. They removed humidifier and redesigned duct work layout and installed new supply and return duct using galvanized steel main supply trunk and foil-faced flex leads, sealed and with insulation to code. Included dampers for all supply leads. They also replaced my dryer vent with metal duct which has tremendously improved clothes drying time! I am extremely pleased North Star! Contract manager, Tom, visited on-site almost daily to oversee proper installation and to consult with the install supervisor (main technician, Al). The work ethic of the main technician Al is to be commended; he was a most methodical, knowledgeable, and steady worker who did not slack off whatsoever on the job. Sales Associate Shelly, also visited during the installation period to assure customer satisfaction. Although the house air flow has greatly improved, when outside temperatures above 80 degrees and humidity prevail outside, we still experience a feeling of 'too much wet cold air'. Please note however that our inside air handler and outside heat pump were installed by another local company in 2011. North Star did explain to us that the sizes of these units do not match, lending to improperly conditioned air, i.e., not removing enough moisture from the air. North Star did install two vents and a return to their original installation to help balance the inequity of these units. Shelly, our sales person, has stated she will discuss with Contract Manager Tom and see what can further be done to help.

Recent Review: I had a very good experience with K&B HVAC services. Here’s what I really liked working with them: 1) Three years ago I did a new AC/Heat Pump system in my Washington DC home and I’m still dealing with some of the issues of the install. As a consequence, I was very involved in the details of this job. Karyn (the K in K&B) really listened to what I was trying to achieve and specific details I had in mind. Most of the other vendors I talked to we’re much less inclined to consider some of my requests. I’m not an HVAC expert, and they signaled that to me in almost every discussion Karyn on the other hand, really worked with me to figure out a more efficient duct layout to reclaim storage space in the attic and explored ways to eliminate the overall mustiness in the house that I was concerned about. 2) They gamely took on the permitting requirements in Rehoboth that are more stringent than Sussex County DE overall. Karyn took the time and had the persistence to complete the permitting and inspection process in a way that complied with local requirements and maintained good relations with the permitting office. This was their first Rehoboth install and they really learned how to get it done. 3) They also went through the process of learning and completing Delaware’s Energy rebate program. I got several thousand dollars back on the install and they doggedly worked the process to get me through it. Again, this was their first time doing the rebates, but they learned it and got it done. 4) Finally, they did an efficient and professional job on the install. They even helped out moving in the incredibly heavy hybrid hot water heater. They went the extra mile thinking about the details of the placement of condensate drains, use of flex and hard duct material and mounting the units to minimize vibration. Brett (the B in K&B) accommodated my requests for special removable sections into the crawl space area and worked continuously until the job was complete. The systems been running three months now without issue and the improvement in air quality is huge. Everyone says that the quality of the AC / Heat Pump design and install is more important than the brand of the system itself, Rheem is considered a mid-tier brand, but I am far happier with it than the high end Carrier system I have in DC. Five year Warranty is the same for each brand in any case. I shopped around (online too) and their price was very competitive. In short, I highly recommend K&B.

RJ Hitch was the Tech who did the install. He was very professional and courteous. He did a very clean install of the humidifier and thermostat. He also helped me get on-line after hooking up the WiFi Thermostat to make sure that the App worked on my iPhone, iPad, and PC. He made sure that everything was operational, and answered all my questions regarding the operation before leaving my home.

DCustom Mechanical Inc
This is an update on the work done by this contractor after a little under three years of time. The spray foam added to the attic has worked out very well, and that continues to be a useful addition to the house. I note, however, that the sub-contractor crew that did the work were not very professional. Among other things, they broke the handle on our front door while doing the work, and at first denied that it was they who did it. As to the crawlspace encapsulation: over a period of 12 - 18 months, the tape they used to seal the vapor barrier on the bottom of the crawlspace separated in many places and the humidity level did not stay below the 60% level necessary to prevent mold growth. They came back once and re-taped, but that tape too separated, and the concept of blowing some HVAC air (winter and summer) into the crawl space to keep humidity down did not work well enough to keep the humidity level at a satisfactory level. They said they would get the humidity level down, but at some point, they removed the humidity sensor saying it was defective, and said they would come back once more in six months or a year, and that would be the end of the service provided under the contract. They did come back one more time as promised. By that time I had another company replace the tape (which has not separated) and install a de-humidifier. These two changes are keeping the humidity at a satisfactory level. While this work was going on, our water heater started leaking, and we had Custom Mechanical install a tankless water heater. They installed a heater made by "American," and it has not worked reliably. At one point, it would stop producing hot water every month or so usually while someone was in the shower. We are using another company to maintain this water heater now, and they have installed a water filter, cleaned the internal firing mechanism twice, and added an opening to the exterior of the house for air intake, which should have been done with the initial installation. Even with all these changes, the heater is not as reliable as one would expect. Our neighbors have Renai heaters and none of them have had these problems. Based on this experience, we are changing the letter grade from an A to a D, we do not recommend them to others, and we would not hire them again
