FA+ Handyman Services
DO NOT HIRE THIS PERSON!! I am a new home owner, less than 2 months. As part of my settlement, the previous owner agreed to pay funds for door repair. The check could not be made out to me but had to go to a contractor that I hired. Stephen Winkleman is the owner of A+ Handyman services. He received a cashiers check of almost $10K from the seller. The doors are unique and had to be custom ordered. It took 4 weeks for the doors to arrive. Not only were they the wrong type of doors but cheaply made. They were returned and the contractor tried to complete various tasks around my home. NOTHING was completed. Everything was half done, no clean up and debris left at the residence. While waiting for the new doors, the contractor asked for more money. Our original estimate was a little over 14K. I obliged and gave him $5000. Once that check was cashed, the sob stories started rolling in. "Family health issues, employee concerns", etc. He then contacted me and asked to put my project off for a month. I honestly thought that he was being truthful and wanted him to take care of his family concerns. I even offered to pay for a rental car to see his family. At this point, contact stopped. I would have to insist on estimates in writing and that he return my calls. I had a sinking feeling and knew that it would not be a good ending. The final straw came when I went with the contractor to pick out fixtures for the doors. We were at the cashier, the total came to over $15K and he looked at me as if I were supposed to pay. This person had over 14K of my money for over a 2 month period and honestly thought that I would throw down a credit card. He left in a huff in front of all and later called me and told me that I "embarrassed him". At this point, I went to the police station. I found that had spent my money and had to borrow money from his family to refund me (ILLEGAL) This is a felony and I was more than prepared to have him arrested. I suppose the threat of incarceration made him reach out to refund my money. The officer also pointed out that the contractor has filed for bankruptcy and has had a separate civil claim from a former employee for non-payment of income. Because of the Millsboro Police Department, I received a partial refund. The contractor supplied a ridiculous list of elevated charges that he wanted to be paid for. At this point, I would rather have the issue be laid to rest. All in all, he had over 14K in his possession for 2 months while only doing sloppy labor of $900. STAY CLEAR.
