Recent Review: It took about 3 weeks from placing the order to installation because the door had to be ordered, which is understandable. The installers showed up on time and went right to work. The old door came out pretty easy. It was determined that a threshold plate was needed and the supervisor went and got that while the two installers readied the opening. It was not long before the supervisor returned and the installers finished the installation. The job was completed with no damage to the molding that had to be removed. The sliding door and screen door was adjusted for ease of operation. The installers, a father and son team, were both professional and friendly the job was completed quickly and all trash was removed.

Recent Review: Mr. Dexter was recommended to us by a coworker. We were selling our house and needed to get some things taken care of. The popcorn ceiling in the hallway was the biggest concern. We found his price a bit on the high side. I did feel that perhaps by hanging plastic from ceiling to floor instead of only halfway down he could have saved me some clean up of dust debris from the sanding of the ceilings. Mr. Dexter did come when he said he would, he did the work he said he would do and he charged what he said he would charge.

Recent Review: They arrived on time. They removed the old door and cleaned up the opening. They then began the installation of the new door. It was leveled and plumbed and attached. Then was filled with foam insulation around the edges. Then they put trim around the whole opening and caulked everything it from the elements. They cleaned up the area and removed the old door from the premises. Why the "B"? Their prices are a bit high for one thing. The other thing is a little thing but it bothered me so I feel obliged to mention it. Part of the new door was the sliding screen door. That in itself was fine. But it was poorly adjusted and wouldn't slide well. Fortunately I have done contract work in the past and knew how to adjust the door. They should have done it as part of the install. Having said that, I give them extra points for for bringing and installing a latch to be able to open the door and still feel it's secured. I also would recommend them to others. Thanks Yost.

Recent Review: When the existing vinyl siding was removed, the guys noticed that the aluminum flashing was insufficient or non existent. They redid all the flahing which was extensive due to the porch having an exterior door and six windows. There was also some rotted wood at the base of the porch which they replaced without hesitation. After the siding was complete they moved directly to tackling the task of replacing 6 exterior doors. Our house is over 100 years old which makes the task all that much more difficult. All went fairly smoothly until of course the last of the doors was removed. Upon removal of the existing door the guys found that all the wood under the door was extremely rotted due mainly to insect damage. This led to the investigation of the landing just inside the door. It also was extremly insect damaged. As with the rotted wood on the porch Mark and Gerard were willing and able to fix the problem. These repairs were an additional expense which is to be expected. The guys did not perform any tasks that would add expense to the original estimate without first discussing it with us the homeowners. They were on the job every day when they said they would be, and continued until the work was complete.

Recent Review: We decided to remove a sagging porch from our house and replace it with a substantial addition: two stories plus a basement.  This involved digging a foundation, removing the back of the house, expanding the first floor, and putting in a bathroom and two bedrooms on the second floor.  We talked to three former customers of Tetlow Builders and toured their completed construction prior to beginning our project, so we knew we were in good hands - and indeed, this was one of the best construction experiences we've ever heard of. Dave Tetlow was involved from the beginning, and had good interactions with our architect; Dave's excellent suggestions resulted in some creative solutions to our particular issues of adding onto a pre-existing 1960s traditional Cape Cod home.  Dave and his team arrived every day promptly at 8 a.m., and the process went at a good pace - it was fun to come home every day and see what had happened.  They were very careful about keeping dust and dirt from invading the rest of the house (we lived there during construction), which we very much appreciated.  On a project of this size, naturally, there were a few unexpected issues (none due to Dave or his crew) which were efficiently resolved, and the work moved forward quickly. One thing that was particularly important to us, being new to construction projects, was Dave?s gentle recommendations when he felt that we might be making a decision we could regret.  One example:  in our added sunroom, we opted to use tile rather than hardwood flooring, to save money.  Dave urged us to reconsider, saying that he thought we?d really prefer wood in the long run.  We?re glad that we took his advice every time we look at the glowing floor that he installed. For our addition Dave engaged a number of subcontractors (foundation, plumbing, electrical, insulation, drywall, roofing, gutters, shelving, etc.) whom he has worked with for years, all of whom were very experienced and did a fine job.  After one site inspection, the building inspector told us privately that we were fortunate to be working with Dave Tetlow, as his work quality, adherence to building codes, and integrity guaranteed that our project would be prosecuted skillfully, with no cutting of corners. Dave also recommended and works with a number of local stores for bathroom fixtures, cabinetry, carpets, etc.  All of these folks were great to work with in helping us select items for our addition. They were uniformly enthusiastic about dealing with Dave, whom they highly respect for his business ethics and quality installation of their products. We were very impressed with the fine work that Dave did himself; he does excellent carpentry, tiling, and finish work.  He put in several rooms' worth of hardwood floors, which are gorgeous, and his tiling in the bathrooms (floors and walls) was exquisite.  He built several bookcases and a window seat (with storage underneath it) for us, and did all the assembly and finish work on a long worktable and desk unit that we purchased at United Builders Supply (Westerly), all of which came out beautifully. Dave is a delightful person to work with:  he has a pleasant manner, extremely high integrity, and a great sense of humor.  We had no concerns at all in giving him a key to the house.  I was touched at one point when he carefully relocated our indoor cats to the basement when some workers needed to prop an outside door open while we were away.  We enjoyed dealing with him to the extent that we missed seeing him once the project was done.  Our construction was completed over a year ago.  Since that time, Dave?s work has been essentially problem-free.  One of our sliding closet doors recently settled a bit, and Dave squared it up immediately, refusing to take any payment for the work. We wholeheartedly recommend Tetlow Builders for projects large or small.  In fact, I carry a small stack of his business cards with me, so I can share them with friends who are in need of an honest, excellent, reasonably priced builder.

Recent Review: The experience was extremely positive.  Throughout the entire remodel the team gave advice and suggestions that were excellent.  Additional built in shelves/bookcases were put in both the main area and bathroom allowing for no wasted space.  The electrical team was amazing, putting lights overhead in the perfect locations.  Also, the company gave excellent referrals to other companies.  Such as who to help with waterproofing the basement, go with for fixtures, and what types of HDMI cables to use.

ABetter Built Basements LLC
The Better-Built-Basements team was discovered at the Mohegan Sun Home Show in January 2012. After researching similar contractors, Better-Built was selected and contacted in March 2012. Two representatives visited our home and the layout process was begun. My wife and I knew pretty much what we wanted and the Better Built team helped us to create a plan. This phase took about two months. After a delay on our part, construction began in August 2012. The completion date was established at Nov 30, 2012. The project was actually completed in April, 2013. Delays in the project did create some consternation for my wife and me. However, the final results made any inconvenience, well worth it! A lead foreman was assigned to our project. The entire team took great measures to make sure we got exactly what we wanted (which we did). The project continued to evolve throughout the entire timeframe. The Better Built Team helped (and guided) us to pick out materials, including wood, lighting, electronics, flooring, and plumbing. They were able to use the irregular ceiling levels (due to heating ducting, carrying beams, etc) into distinct ceiling heights with crown molding that helped to define the different areas of the room (i.e. bar, theater, office, fitness room) They assisted with the selection of bar appliances, bathroom fixtures and theater electronics such as a large screen TV and audio. They provided flooring and paint samples. We called upon a female on their staff who helped to make color, fixture, lighting and layout choices. We consulted her throughout the entire project. She was really indispensable. The work site was kept clean throughout. A cleanup was conducted at the end of each work day. The workmanship is stunning. All carpentry and woodwork including the bar, fireplace surround and mantle, chair rail, crown molding, bar, and bar and bath cabinets, doors (standard and pocket) was done by experienced craftsmen; staining and painting really perfect. The surround sound system was installed by an experienced young man who made good recommendations and helped to make some subtle changes that made the TV viewing area much better. The building inspector confided in us that our basement was the nicest that he had ever seen! (really!!) When our friends visit our room for the first time (we haven't given it a name yet) their jaws literally drop. Overall, the Better Built Team is a professional team of designers and builders. Their sub contractors were amazing, taking great pride in their work and acting as if the work they did was for themselves. The final result far exceeded our expectations! We are so proud of our entertainment center and naturally, we LOVE IT!

The project was contracted to take 6 weeks, he dragged it out to almost 5 months. When building the structure I identified aspects of the work that I was not happy with, his catch phrase was "don't judge my work until it is finished." Then when he said he was finished he told me that I would get used to the shoddy work (paraphrase). A quick list of my issues are: 1) The room is built at the wrong height, people trip over the threshold and the screen can't be removed. This also left a poorly cut well in the flooring around the door because the door didn't fit up to the new room. 2) Flooring was not installed properly, ends of the floor planks should have been trimmed so the boards would square up to each other. 3) The floor was not sanded before it was stained and the stain was not put on properly so there are lap marks from where he brushed it on. 4) He removed part of the tongue and groove ceiling downstairs to do the work upstairs, when he put the downstairs ceiling back in he splintered and marred the wood, this he felt was ok to leave as is. 5) Didn't install the outside door properly, it leaks when it rains. 5) Sheetrock was not spackled properly, I can see almost every screw hole and joint. 6) Gutters are not properly installed, gutter supports are not attached to the gutters. 6) He removed fencing, which he said would not interfere with the room and left a hole where it should be. I could go on with what some might regard as trivial, such as never receiving the key to the door he installed or the fact that he would use my tools and leave them on my lawn, and it is a long list of what would be regarded as minor stuff. Ultimately, I would have to say the minor complaints I have reflect his unprofessionalism and lack of respect for the customer. The more significant complaints show me he is incompetent in this business. He might be ok at replacing your kitchen sink, but I would not trust him on a major project.
