Midstate Paving
Recent Review: I was very pleased with Midstate paving. I called to get an estimate, and the owner, Nick, returned my call in a timely fashion. Nick came on a Saturday to give me an estimate; his young family was in the car; but that did not have an impact on his ability to talk with me and answer my questions. I appreciated that he was trying to spend time with his family on the weekend. Nick came to the house and got his crew going to do the prep work. Nick also came back at the end of the day to ensure that the job was done correctly. On the day that the asphalt was put down Nick was there the entire day. Today we had a big rain and my sidewalk in the front of my house did not flood. This has been a problem for me since I have owned the home for the past 23 years. I made it very clear to Nick that I wanted this problem fixed and he seems to have fixed it. My neighbor commented on the good quality of the job that was done; he noted that it was much better than a paving job he just had done at a rental property that he owns. Nick and his crew were very respectful; I would highly reccommend Midstate paving.

Recent Review: I like the look of the finished driveway and sidewalk, but there were too many issues that made me uncomfortable. The first crew who ripped out the old asphalt and laid the base for my new driveway didn't take the design out far enough into the turn-out. They just left without asking me if it was OK. I had the asphalt crew fix the problem. Had I not been there, I wouldn't have what I wanted. One of the guys putting in the new concrete sidewalk drank beers all day and threw his bottle caps and limes in my yard. Maybe this is typical for this area? The asphalt crew had to cut the sidewalk near the house. I found the cut-up concrete slabs they should have taken with them behind my woodpile last weekend. They almost left that day without completing the curbing I had asked for. I had to call the office to confirm. The crew left, the foreman took my check, and I wasn't asked to go over the job or asked if I had any questions. I've called the office twice now requesting a job completion receipt, and was told they would mail one out. They failed to do so both times. The office staff seemed irritated that I wasn't happy with the proposal copy or my canceled check. $6,800 is a lot of money to spend on one home project. I can't even get a receipt. I expect a contractor to care whether the customer buying their services is happy with what they paid for. They were the highest quote I received by $500 to $600. More didn't equal better. I have a nice new driveway, but if I ever have to deal with another paving company (or any contractor), I'll make sure I end up with a company that truly appreciates my business. Drinking on the job, littering the customer's yard, hiding the debris in the yard, poor communication and not responding to requests for a receipt are unprofessional. I rate them a C overall because I'm satisfied with the finished product so far and some of the crew were helpfully accommodating.... but if you choose this company, be sure to be at home whenever they're working to ensure the job is done to your specifications and they take everything they rip out with them, since that's in the contract. Professionalism rates them a D.

MIREK MASONRY
Recent Review: Honest, hardworking, detailed, helpful.  Its a pleasure to deal with a contractor like this.  He supervises what a helper or workmen does if he isn't doing it himself.  Gives you options and pro's and cons.  Gives very honest prices and recommendations which seems to be rare these days.   The work was really very neat and carefully done to match surroundings.  I would't have improved a thing.  For the lining of the chimney, he even put a cap on it that we didn't expect.  There was nothing to clean up anywhere.  I happened to see his crew putting in a sidewalk somewhere else with supervision--the concrete sidewalk looked perfect when done.  My only regret was that we didn't find him before going through some other quotes we never used!

Alex Masonry
Award 2018Super Service Award
Recent Review: I contacted Alex Masonry via the Angieslist website on May 23, 2014.  That was a Friday afternoon and I expected to hear back from them next week sometime.  I got a call back 5 minutes after I sent my original e-mail.  We agreed to meet on May 28th to discuss the project, prices and when the work could be done.  We were able to quickly agree on the project specifics of what was to be done. Alex showed us pictures of similar jobs they had done in the past. We  were not sure how the facing materials would look at our house.  We were disappointed that we would have to wait until July to get the work done since they had a lot of jobs scheduled already.  If any openings became available they would do it earlier.   While we waited for them to "free up" to do our job Alex directed me to a stone supplier that he used that was located in Hartford so we could look at the materials in person.  We concluded that we did like the look of the materials. I contacted Alex in the third week in June to get a firm July start date.  After some discussion Alex proposed June 27th start date, and they would finish on Saturday June 28th. Great, an earlier start than expected.  The crew of 5 arrived 8 AM (on time) on the 27th.  They worked quietly and quickly on the demolition.  As that was progressing I told Alex that we preferred a more horizontal look for the quartzite rather than odd shapes.  So  he obliged and they cut just about every stone so that the pattern was more like  horizontal wall stones.  At the end of day 1, all the old stuff had been demolished, the sides of the stoop were re-covered with horizontal looking the gold quartzite and the sidewalk forms were in place.  The worksite was clean. On day 2, the bluestone was cut and placed.  The sidewalk was poured and finished.  The whole work area was cleaned up.  Sunday Alex showed up to remove the forms and fill in the form space with soil.  We really like the results of this project.  It was very well done without any "drama".  We're glad we chose Alex Masonry.

CJD Construction
Owners of JD Construction Paving and Masonry, Tom and James Delaney, are very personable and good salesmen. Their convincing sales pitch was, they do not require any down payment and you pay them in full when the work is done. JD Construction signed up six home owners on my street for driveway resurfacing or replacement. They did all six driveways in one day using a dump truck containing the asphalt and workers used wheel barrows to lay the asphalt. The result was that my driveway's surface is not as smooth laid and expected. In addition, JD construction failed to return to remove the sidewalk concrete forms (boards) after replacing my sidewalks. After waiting three weeks, I removed the forms myself. JD Construction advertises on their trucks and literature they are members of the Better Business Bureau. Some time after the work was done, I checked the BBB web site and found their membership had been revoked. If I had done my proper due diligence prior to signing a contract with JD Construction, I probably would not have hired them.

FGANNOE CONCRETE DESIGN
Relationship started off good with him helping his father (Gannoe Pool) level the pool he installed, he corrected it from 4" out of level to 2". Then he laid the cap form that followed contour of the pool ~ 16" away from tile and it varied up to 4" within a couple feet(something that an inexperienced eye would detect). I asked if he would adjust form so that it was closer to the actual contour of the pool. He said no and I got the sense he was offended??? He went on to say that the level of quality I was expecting was ridiculous and he was not going to adjust form but remove them. Gives a new meaning to customer satisfaction. I was hesitant from the start of the pool install to have Jeff pour cap and do stamped concrete because I saw his other jobs and I was not impressed. I saw Mancini pool decks(oxford) and there is no comparison in quality. I glad not to have any decking done this year because there are sink holes around pool that would certainly compromise base of decking. More detail t_riffic10@yahoo.com Good luck
