Recent Review: Duke?s plumbers arrived for an estimate of replacing the copper plumbing in my house with pex. The service guy was smoking outside my house when I arrived, (he was early). I had him estimate the cost to redo the plumbing, and clean the ductwork. Total pipe needed was about 220 ft of pipe, with 2 baths (sink, toilet, tub\shower), 1 kitchen sink, and 1 hot water heater was $7,200, about 1-2 days work. This included tearing out a wall and replacing to get to the plumbing in the bath (putting a fiberglass shower back in place of my tile one). Or $5,500 if I left the 2 baths alone and they attached to the corroded copper. They wanted $4,600 to install a tankless water heater and $1,690 to install a citrus water ?softener? (note that citrus ?softeners? don?t actually soften the water). When asked he said they use Uponur pipe; and T connections, no manifold. Uponur, is about $80 per 100ft for the pipe; so the bulk of the $5,500 cost was labor. They also recommended Nuvo for their water heater and softener. Duke?s plumbers charge for their estimate at the rate of $105\hr; so they asked for $105 at the end of the estimate. He also did a quick heater burnout test (turning the heater on high for 15-20 minutes) to ensure it was in good condition to work on the system after I capped two ducts. Ductwork estimate was $590 (flat cost) to do a cleaning, paid in full up front. In the end I had them do the $590 cleaning, but $7200+ seemed expensive to re-plumb in pex. I scheduled the duct cleaning for the next Sunday (4 days away), and the two guys arrived (one was Tommy) on time and promptly got started after I showed them the house and explained the weird duct layout underneath. They used a big shop vac with a brush, to pull the dirt towards them and moved from every vent to the center (using a 35ft hose). They were unable to remove one of the vents, and told me that if I could remove it, they would clean it. The vent in question had been put on such that a piece of wood on the railing covered the corner slightly. Two screws and it was off for him. Once they were done, they ran some aerosol spray through the heater (while the heater was on to pull the air) to seal fine dust left over, sanitize, and deodorize the system; total time took about 90 to 120 minutes. They used a smaller shop vac to clean out the duct registers before the big one as well. All in all the air duct cleaning made the ducts look cleaner, although a fine dust still remained. The price was a bit high though. I would suggest shopping around and getting a few quotes. ---- UPDATE --- The owner of Duke plumbing (Duke himself) called me today (May 6th) and we chatted for 15-20 minutes about the above review. I told him I would update the review with our discussion and make corrections. He expressed concern that I had posted a semi negative review, leaving a C for punctuality. Per the review guidelines, A = Excellent, B = Good, C = Fair, D = Bad, F = Lousy. He wanted to know why I had put a Fair rating on punctuality. I informed him that the main reason was his service tech had been smoking and smelled like smoke when walking into the home. Good would have been not smoking. He asked where the service tech was smoking, I told him it was his van out front. He explained that this was a public place and he was free to smoke there. I agreed, but told him he still smelled like smoke walking into the house. Duke also expressed concern that I miss represented his Nuvo water softener. He discussed the multitude of satisfied customers in houses all across Nevada that had the system. From my research online, I see that about 50% of the people are dissatisfied with their unit. He also expressed that with a normal salt system I would have to replace it every 10 years or so (adding salt as needed), whereas with his citrus unit, I would change the citrus filter every 6 months and save money over replacing the salt unit. I would also reduce water usage for cleaning the ion filter. Salt right now, costs $5-8 for a 40lb bag. The water softener service tech I had out earlier quoted me 1-2 bags per month of salt; so I would expect a cost of about $60-96\6 month period. The Nuvo water softener citrus filter is $70 as of this writing. So it is in line with the same cost. I did not have an objective to the Nuvo directly, just their claim that they were softening the water. Water softening, per definition, is removing the calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations in the hard water. Per Nuvo?s own website, it does not remove these materials in the water, thus why I called it water ?softener? with quotes. Maybe a better word is water treatment. Nuvo also says they make the water acidic. Considering my water is exactly 7 right now, this would not be good for my copper pipes if it got too acidic. There is no information on how much the pH decreases on Nuvo?s website, so I am unsure if it would be an issue or not. Duke also expressed a concern that I had not fully understood the work being done for the bathroom, or stated as much in the review. I informed him that the service tech explained that the work included pulling down the tile wall, fixing the plumbing inside, and replacing the bathtub and shower walls in the guest room, but without tile. I believe Duke expressed that it was with tile back up. In any case, he also expressed that there was another way in that could be done by cutting a hole in the wall and replacing it with a diamond tile cover. He said it was more labor intensive, but was another method to not have to replace the entire tub or tear down the tile wall, which would cost more. Duke also brought up was that I had mentioned that their company charges $105\hr for estimates. He did not disagree that they charge this, but stated that I miss-represented it because if service is ordered while they are doing the estimate, they would not charge the fee. This is correct. The estimation fee was waived because I signed up for the $590 duct work cleaning at that time. Additionally, he argued that because his service tech performed a furnace burnout test, that work as done and a fee could have been charged. I explained I did not ask for this test to be done. One of the last items we discussed was the reason his service tech Tommy didn?t want to remove the piece of wood on the railing that covered the vent. He explained that I had mentioned to Tommy that a hammer would get it off, which I did (although I quickly realized it was screwed on). And that his tech Tommy didn?t want to damage the wood railing to get to the vent. If I had been too harsh in my initial review on this, then I don?t mean to be. Tommy worked well and I would hire him again; I appreciate his concern for not breaking the wood railing. The comment was solely meant to explain that if something is blocking a vent, plan to move it for them. The last item that Duke had discussed was to let me know that he was angry when reading my review. He explained that many businesses rely on reviews heavily in this day and age for business. I agreed. He did not understand the reasoning for my review, but after discussing with him I told him I would go and update my Angie?s list review per our discussion to correct any issues or miss-representations I might have made (thus this update). I have posted pictures of the vent that is covered, and the post cleaned air vents (I did not get prior pictures).
