It was the first time we EVER had a contractor walk away from a job because we wouldn't pay him more money for a mistake that he made. It's against the law in California to charge a customer more than the job quote unless both parties agree, but Kirk wasn't going to give up trying. We ended up having another company finish the picket fence (it turned out beautifully) and we also asked for part of the money back from Willard that we paid in advance because it was for more than just the materials. We had to send more than one letter, Kirk's daughter sent us invoices of what they paid for the materials but it wasn't adding up, and eventually we compromised and only got back part of what was owed to us. No respectable fence company charges a customer in advance, and we knew we didn't have to pay for the entire job ahead of time, but we did pay for the materials so Kirk wouldn't have another fit. He was very unprofessional. We also discovered just yesterday, 7/27/2011, that his license has been suspended. You can check the CSLB website yourselves for the license status of almost any contractor in California. Willard Fencing's license is under a Contractors Bond Suspension.
