I hired this company to do an inspection on the structure of my house. I wanted to move a wall but I didn't know if it was a retaining wall. They came and did the inspection. I like that they gave me the option to have a report or not for a additional price as they did not charge me that much to come and do the inspection.

I only needed an assessment. He emailed a detailed report to me and since the "fix" required removing a neighbor's tree and some minor work, I did not hire him to do any work. I was very satisfied with Alpha Structural Engineering for their promptness and professionalism.

I spoke with Lisa who was incredibly helpful and super efficient. They couldn't do the work I needed because they are a full service company (they do the construction as well) and I didn't need that. But she gave me a referral. Very nice and if I ever need to do a lot of work on my house I would use them.

The experience was fine. He was clear about what needed to be done and basically what we wanted to know. He just did the engineering part not the construction part. We ended up going with other company because they do the engineering as well as the construction.

Contacted Matt Jones at Peninsula Engineering to provide a structural engineering review of a retaining wall in my back yard. Matt said the review would take 3 hours at $170 per hour and he would do a thorough review, prepare a detailed 1-2 page report and provide detailed pictures with his recommendation. He showed up and immediately said "this will be easy" He spent less than 10 minutes looking at the wall and we spend 20 minutes in discussion, most of the 20 minutes being about his invoice. He wanted payment at that time of the full $510. I paid $260 and told him when I received the written report including pictures I would pay the remainder. He was not happy about this. I said he could email the report and pictures and he said he could not because the pictures would be too large. About a week later I received a 1 1/2 page report that could have been written by a 12 year old and no pictures. The report stated "wood showing signs of rot" and "top soil is fill" All very obvious items. His recommendation was to consult with another consultant!! This is not what he represented I would receive so I placed 4 calls over the next week to him to discuss. I received no reply to any of my calls so I wrote him a letter indicating my dissatisfaction with the lack of promised information and suggested that the $260 covered 1 1/2 hours of his time which was more that was spend on this. Yesterday I received a demand letter from his attorney threatening to sue me over this. His attorney indicated that he provided what was agreed and he spend more than three hours on this. Conclusion Misrepresented what he would do. Provided no expert opinion or pictures as promised. Refused to discuss the issue Threatened to sue There are a lot of reputable and professional contractors out there with business ethics. I will let you be the judge if you think Mark and Peninsula Engineering fall into this category.

Mark, Dave, Susan and the team at Alpha are AMAZING! They go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure things are done right. A while back, a retaining wall, built by an incompetent contractor, had massively failed on our property in the Hollywood Hills during a wind and rainstorm. The wall was buckling and was threatening the properties below. It felt like it really was a doomsday scenario. The team at Alpha came out immediately to assess the situation and made recommendations on how to temporarily make the site safe while we were dealing with the insurance. They made us feel at ease and held our hand every step of the way. They were always available and incredibly professional. The overall process took several months to complete, from dealing getting structural engineers involved, pulling city permits and the physical building of the wall. Thanks to Alpha, we emerged with a backyard that is awesome to go in to and with a retaining wall that is sure to last as long as LA does! We really appreciate the quality of work and the pride that Alpha has in their product!

He provided the necessary drawings and structural calculations as well as making changes required by the city plan checker. We will be using his company for all of our structural engineering needs from here on out.

Recent Review: I needed a structural engineer to perform calculations on plans I had made by a draftsman. Brent was very helpful, did the calculations for me in a timely manner and was very reasonable.
Recent Review: We required a report from a structural engineer on the cracks in our house for a mortgage refinance. Jeremy was able to squeeze us into his schedule at the last minute to accommodate our lender's short timeline. He gave the house a very thorough inspection and spent time with us to explain the issues in detail. We highly recommend him!
Recent Review: We wanted to replace our small pond with a much larger pond, a waterfall and provide a greatly expanded deck area to make our backyard more usable. The existing deck was heavily rotted and needed replacing. Nexxus was hired for everything but the pond/waterfall construction and landscaping. Construction began in the beginning of October. The project began as a complex network of decks and staircases for a hillside yard with a 30 degree slope. The design had to be modified numerous times during the project to accommodate issues that cropped up during the construction. Oh the joys of building into a steep hillside! John's input was invaluable. Poor guy probably left the site with a crushing headache during the first month as we worked out the details on how to create the transitions between the various deck levels. The destruction of the existing deck was fast and smooth. Debris was removed on a daily basis. John ran strings so that we could better visualize the various deck locations before the foundations were poured. The deck was constructed with the joists spaced 12" apart rather than the required 16" to provide a much stronger support structure. The support structure was treated for termites and stained before the Ipe deck boards were added. LED lighting was installed on the stair risers and the deck perimeter. Custom wrought iron rails were created and installed. Mini retaining walls were installed everywhere where the deck might come into contact with dirt. The crowning glory is a 16' diameter 6-sided gazebo with valley views, complete with power, lighting, ceiling fan and a gas hook up. Did everything go smoothly? Uh, no. With a project of this size and complexity, I would have been very suspicious if it went without a hitch. We had few delays due to unexpected rain (it is simply not supposed to rain in Southern California in October!). After the first major rain, I was discussing some issues with John when we noticed numerous bugs flying around us. Upon inspection, we determined that they were sub-terrainean termites that were in the process of swarming after the rains. Tony quickly responded and had the hillside treated the following day. Once the deck was partially completed, the exterior doors began appearing quite dilapidated by comparison. We decided to replace the French doors as well as an additional exterior door. When the existing doors were removed, we had to install a suitable frame as the previous doors had not been properly installed. And once the new doors were in, the paint suddenly looked shabby so that led to the house being repainted as well. It's the domino effect - it happens! The overall job did take longer than expected and did go over budget. Some of this was totally unavoidable (rain delays, additions to the original scope of work). The overall quality of work, however was far superior to that of other contractors we have dealt with in the past. Is Nexxus cheap? No. But again, quality demands a premium. Materials used were top notch as was the workmanship. Is Tony a modest man? Definitely not. But if you are smart, you will listen to his recommendations and benefit from his years of experience. I kept sarcastically telling him that he needed to go to "Assertiveness training"! Tony is more than willing to give you his opinion, whether you asked for it or not! We did not implement all of his suggestions as we do not have unlimited funds, but we certainly listened, ignored some suggestions, implemented some immediately and created a wish list for later. In conclusion, we will be contacting Tony for future projects.
Recent Review: Amgad examined the drywall and some exposed studs to assess the situation. He was very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. The pricing was reasonable as well. I would not hesitate to hire San Mina Engineering again!
