Bruce and I met back in January and agreed to the architectural vision I wanted to accomplish.  There were hurdles with the HOA and work could not start until late March.  Bruce had a family emergency soon after March, and the project got delayed another 2 months, but after which the engineering did go well.  Bruce had lateral simulations and other calculations that the City will look at when considering permits.  These simulations showed our original intent of few posts needed to be changed if I was to keep the pavers for the patio.  With the simulations passing, the engineering was completed. The engineering and drafting worked in parallel, so soon after the engineering was complete, we were able to get city permits within 1 day and work could start.

WE HAD A LOT OF PROBLEMS GETTING THE WORK COMPLETED ON TIME. THERE WERE CONSTANT DELAYS WHICH COST US A LOT OF TIME IN GETTING THE BUILDING PLANS IN TO THE CITY. THE ENGINEER WORKING WITH US RARELY RETURNED OUR CALLS. WE WOULD NOT WANT TO USE THEIR SERVICES AGAIN, BUT IT IS HARD TO FIND DEPENDABLE STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS.

I scheduled an appointment with Kemal, the structural engineer. When I arrived for my appointment, there was someone else waiting for Kemal at the same scheduled appointment time. When Kemal showed up, 20 minutes late, he apologized about the mix-up. I explained to him we needed an interior wall taken out of our home to enlarge our kitchen. We received a quote for $3500 and were told to come in and show him again which wall we wanted to have taken out. He also told us it would take 2-3 weeks to complete the job. We contacted another structural engineer who completed the work for $900 in less than a week.

We feel much better about having the retaining wall rebuilt now that we have Bruce's professional recommendation on how to do it right.  It was money well-spent so we can avoid costly mistakes on the project.

I am purchasing a home and needed a structural engineer to examine the roof of the property because it has a noticeable dip.  I hired Bruce to provide an in-person consultation and to provide a written report of the findings as well as a design of the correction that is needed.  Bruce was terrific to work with.  He really took the time on the phone and in person to clearly communicate.  (Believe me, explaining engineering concepts to me is no small feat!)

Nick Servin is a RCE (Registered Professional Engineer) of Servin Engineering, Inc., 2647 Gateway Road, Suite 105-500, Carlsbad, CA 92009, 760-533-6532, nickservin@gmail.com A little background: I never thought I would need a structural engineer to have a simple 16"x16' stand-alone Guest-House permitted. After fighting with the City of Vista over an addition to my main house, they reviewed my property to way before Vista even a city. Back to when this was just county land. They found the Guest-House on my property had not been permitted and were holding the main project hostage till I conformed and submitted. So, I had to provide blue-prints, drawings and calculations of the structure. I am an engineer by trade as well, so doing the drawings and title 24 docs and such were easy enough, but when it came to the deck above the structure, I was at a loss. The City of Vista said I needed a report from a structural engineer to ensure the structure was safe for people to use the deck. I sent out a plea for help. A helpful person sent it to an architect friend of his who sent it on to Nick Servin. Nick contacted me, we set a time to meet, he arrived early, saying something to the effect, “In business, if you are on time, you are late.” Nick thoroughly reviewed the building, took some measurements, pictures, a copy of my blueprints and agreed to do the Guest-House report. During his completing his calculations he was constantly in contact with me via, phone, text and e-mail, discussing options, variables and different approaches to satisfy the load-bearing requirements. He quickly provided the report, which had nine (9) pages; a signed and stamped cover, index, engineering assumptions, design criteria (listing codes), load calculations per load member (2x6, 4x6, truss…), footing needed, and a stamped framing plan. I submitted the plan the following day. The City had a few questions; which were easily answered using the report Nick had generated. The permit for the Guest-house and the hostage held permit for the original addition were granted the next day. I was amazed and extremely thankful at how quickly Nick was able to provide what I needed to appease the City, while ensuring a timely, cost effective solution for my structure. If I were ever to need a Structural Engineer again, I would choose Nick Servin; he works with his clientele, is very communicative, personable, patient and as a bonus, lives in “our” community; I like keeping my dollars local.

I'm a design-build general contractor and I asked Bruce for a mid-construction sketch for a a short (+/- 4' high concrete block retaining wall). He was able to turn around a sketch and calc within 24 hours with an EFFICIENT and COST-EFFECTIVE footing size and wall reinforcement. The couple of hundred dollars I spent on his services saved us excavation time and material costs had we instead used a City of San Diego standard (read "over-designed") detail. On another project, Bruce's opinion for retrofitting a truss allowed the clients to make a smart decision on how to proceed with a remodeling project. Based on his experience and advice, we determined that it would not be cost-effective to remodel the attic, but instead propose to remodel elsewhere on the site. Most recently, Bruce took the time to walk a 14,000 square foot development site with me and shared his ideas on alternate foundations for sloping sites. We are in the schematic design phase of the project and his insight helped me as a building designer set parameters for the building footprint and the structure's foundation. We are trying hard to avoid caissons and grade beams and I believe we'll be able to terrace the site with one or two short retaining walls with conventional footings. This is the kind of advise that can literally save tens of thousands of dollars. I look forward to posting updates on this 3rd project as we move forward.

Kemal, the engineer, had trouble finding our address so was about an hour late. Unfortunately, I was unable to stay home from work longer than the original time planned, so he met with my husband only. My husband felt he was clearly very knowledgeable about his field. He spent time talking with my husband after examining the area in question and offered several possible solutions to the problem - ranging from replacement of the retaining wall behind our unit alone to a large and complex project involving several other adjacent units along the edge of the ravine. We felt his price was generally reasonable. He was very courteous and professional and quite helpful overall.

Our house burnt to the ground on October 2007 while we watched from our pool. Our home was located on top of a ridge top with a very narrow lot and steep slopes both sides. We went through four designs before we found the correct architect. Our third designer was hired only to shrink the second design that was too large and this company took it upon themselves to start excavating our lot  in August 2008 without asking us or getting a permit or a contract. The damages done were extreme. This company relocated the massive boulders found on our granite hilltop on the northern edge of our lot and Vinje & Middleton Engineers report declared this rock pile as a major rock slide hazard and our lot was declared unsafe to build on. Their Geotechnical Investigation Report served as the blueprint for repairing the extensive damage to our hilltop building site that the San Diego County Building Department approved and gave us a grading permit. Their engineering geologists and soil engineers were invaluable to the rebuild and worked hand in hand with our contractor, John Douglas Construction. The many people that we worked with at Vinje & Middleton Engineering, Inc. were all true professionals and pleasant to work with. Without their extensive experience and knowledge I have no idea if we would have ever been able to rebuild. When they were called by our general contractor they were always on time and their reports were extensive and accurate. We were finally able to get a certificate approved by them and able to submit to the SD County Department of Building on April 14, 2010. From the day of the fire to completion our home took almost six years but once again we are living in our beautiful ridge top tome. I really do have a lack of words to fully express how much I appreciate this firm and all the help they gave to us. I whole heartily give them five stars our of five stars.

They charged us about $5400. They did a very good job. The crew was very good. They were all very professional. Michel is the guy who runs it and he was very professional too. He showed up on time and he e-mailed me all the information before he showed up. It included the insurance information and everything else. We were very satisfied. In fact, he just did a follow up today on how things were going. Everything was done very well. He had an excellent crew and he has kind of handpicked his crew. So, they all did really well. Everything was done professionally. We did get some lower as well as higher prices, but the price charged by them was pretty good. There were some other things that were involved that came up after they saw what they had to do and put the beam in. They also had a structural engineer come in to check out to make sure that all the numbers were run to get the correct beam and stuff like that. In fact, I am probably going to use them again for some other stuff that I want to have done.
