Reviews in Lamont for Baseboard Installation

ADavid McCullah Construction
David's contracts where clear and we appreciated being able to read the contract which laid out all of the work we wished done, the conditions where we could make alterations and the amounts owed for work performed.  He did an excellent job and the lines of tile on the floor are very very straight, the corners without gaps or small pieces.  The tile flows well into the walk in closets and the baseboards are tight on all corners and snub against the wall.  The caulking on the baseboards is well done.  As I write this, he is doing some trim work on some cabinets.  The cabinet maker had provided poorly done trim, didn't finish the work and then closed his business.  David was able to upgrade the trim, match the stain and the trim now is looking very professionally done.  We are very very pleased.

DMy Handyman Crew
EDIT 10/26/2015: Originally mistakenly posted to Mr. Fix-It.  Edited to reflect posting to correct vendor My Handyman Cres We had the wood floor in our bedroom removed and went with a polished concrete finish - It came out beautiful.  We just needed to have new baseboard installed and this long process would be finished. I signed up with Angie's List  and settled on the highly rated My Handyman Crew to install new baseboard.   I ended up with new baseboard, along with the requirement to repaint our recently painted bedroom and an expensive reminder that, when dealing with contract work , Caveat emptor! My Handyman Crew showed up as agreed, looked over the job and did his measurements.  When I contacted My Handyman Crew on the phone I told him that I would provide the new baseboard, but when he showed up,  I asked him if he could supply the materials and gave him a piece of the old baseboard.  He said he could get the baseboard and that he charged a 30% mark-up on materials - I agreed.  I also asked if he could touch-up the baseboard around the rest of the house because the nail holes and corners had not been caulked. My Handyman Crew showed up several days later along with a worker who he introduced.  He said the worker would be doing the actual installation work. After a full day, the baseboard was installed in the Bedroom - this was a Friday - and the worker said he would be back on the following Tuesday to finish.  It seemed to me that the job was going slower than I would have expected - a full day of 8+ hours to install ~80 feet of baseboard?  The worker left quite a mess of sawdust and old caulking around the bedroom and patio which we had to clean up. Before the worker returned, I called My Handyman Crew to find out how much of a bill I was running up and how much more work he expected.  I also let him know that I was concerned about the pace of work and the mess. Ready .... He informed me that he charged $65 per hour- on top of  the 30% mark-up on materials! He said he would talk to the worker about the pace of work, and that he would likely charge only for the hours worked to date and finish up the work on Tuesday. Tuesday, the worker finished in approximately 2 hours then left.  I was surprised when, 5 minutes later, My Handyman Crew showed up at the door - Invoice in hand and the worker tailing along.  Clearly, he was going to COLLECT his money! He asked me to walk around, and approve the work.  I was surprised, intimidated and unprepared for a final inspection and payment just 5 minutes after the work had finished.  He informed me that he was going to charge for all hours worked and that the amount of billed work was justified because of a transition between the bedroom and bathroom floor where the baseboard had to be trimmed to accommodate the 3/8" higher tile floor in the bathroom.    He followed me around the house with the bill in hand as I looked over the work.  I felt that if I asked for anything to be done the meter would start running and my bill would go up.  As I asked questions or pointed things out, I was careful to state that I was not asking for any additional work. We went back and forth for a short time with me pointing our that we would have been happier if he would have installed baseboard that covered the old caulk line and him pointing our that I had given him a piece of baseboard and that's what he installed. I just wanted this over.  It was useless attempting to express any dissatisfaction. I won't be calling My Handyman Crew again.

The technician called when he was on his way. On that particular morning the smoke alarms decided to start conversing with each other. Unable to reach one of the smoke detectors I asked the technician if he had a tall ladder pretty much as soon as I opened the door. He did. He offered to replace the battery but that didn't work on another smoke detector so I just asked him to take it out. Favor number 1. While he and the other technician were working one one of the four bedrooms I asked if he could measure and cut a chair rail I attempted to put up in my daughters room and gave up on. Favor number 2. We had the chair rail and I figured he would just cut it and leave it to me to put up, which a would have been fine. He measured, cut and installed the chair rail and it matches the baseboards. It looks great. Better than I could have done. Once the baseboards were done, they caulked and sanded them. We've had other baseboards installed in the main living areas of the house and the installation of those didn't quite measure up. They weren't as thorough when cleaning up and left chucks of baseboards on the floor with some other debris, but with the extra favors they did, I'm completely satisfied. Hopefully we won't need more baseboards In the future, but if we did, I know who to call.

The owner visited for the initial appointment.  He discussed the best options for the type of baseboard and caulking that would be optimum for my dining room, living room and foyer.  I appreciated the fact that he took my ideas into consideration.  He also provided me with a written estimate.  The work was finished the next day: no waiting!  After the job was finished, the owner called me to make sure that I was satisfied with the job which I am. Jim and his business provide a model for how a business should be conducted.

I called for an estimate and Ray came right out. He arrived at the time he promised. The estimate was very reasonable for the work performed. He and his son did the work over a period of 3 days. First they pressure washed the house then scraped the peeling paint from the trim, door surrounds and a gate. These are the only wood surfaces outside. They did some minor repair to a trellis prior to painting. A patched area on a stucco surface was painted and the finished area is completely blended with the already painted wall. All of the work area was left clean when the job was finished. My tenant purchased the house after this painting was done. Their work was so good she hired them to do some inside painting.

Jim and his crew are professional, friendly and do high quality work. He did not ask for final payment until I was 100% satisfied with the work. We are extremely happy with our end product and looking forward to having them come back for future projects. I would highly recommend Mr. Fix It.

Submitted bid within 2-3 days of scoping work. Very accommodating on changes and scheduling work. Punctual and on time with what he quoted. Crews were here when they were suppose to be. Did not pull off our job to work on others. Very good cleanup and hauling away debris. Very pleasant to deal with.

Don, one of Jim's employees, showed up a bit early (a good thing) and performed all the work.  He was driven to take the time to do it right, and thought through potential future issues of what I asked him to do and proposed a better way to install the light fixtures to reduce sag and fall risks down the road. Everything was done well and they provide a volume based discount for the work because I bundled a bunch of mini projects into one visit, which improved the value of the cost/benefit for me.  I am now scheduling them for some additional projects!

The owner supervised all work and was friendly, knowledgeable and courteous.  The technicians worked until the jobs were completed.  There were several workmen with various areas of expertise and all were very qualified.  Workers cleaned up when jobs were finished.  All in all, a very professional business.  All work was completed in a timely manner.  I would use this company again.
