AMonterey Bay Handyman and Remodels
I recentally bought a small house and was so happy to have a home of my own. I did not realize my "small" house was too small to interest service companies. I tried four flooring companies and they either would not come for an estimate after I told them the size of my house or would not return my calls. PG&E came to check on my heater and when I asked him about some old wiring and other electrical problems he told me"good luck" finding anyone to come out because the job was not worth doing! I was going to have coffee at the bagle shop in Marina one morning and saw a man setting having his morning coffee. Outside was a truck with Monterey Bay Handyman on the side. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! I walked up and asked him if he would look at my house and give me a estimate. He was there the next day and everything finished within a week or so! He did not think my service problems were too small to bother with----and he helped me find my cat who was hiding from all the noise! He is the only serviceman I will ever use!

I highly recommend Marina Plumbing and Heating. They make real appointments (not 4-hour windows) and show up on time. They are knowledgeable, take the time to understand the issues, and present and discuss a range of options with varying price-points, and results. I received estimates from 5 different companies before selecting one to replace our furnace and install new air filtration. The estimate from Marina Plumbing and Heating was very competitive. Although they were not the cheapest, they were much more professional and easy to work with than the cheaper bids. Marina Pand H also included the cost of required building permits in the estimate, which the cheaper estimates were not including. This is the second project I've had this company work on and in both cases I have been very happy with the results.

I don’t have any complaints about Max or his crew.   They are conscientious, friendly, polite and clean.  I never felt uncomfortable around any of them.  When I had concerns Max did not hesitate to explain why something was done a certain way.  If he had to change anything on the schedule he made sure I was kept informed.  His estimates are very thorough but when issues arose not on the estimate he advised me of the options available and what he thought was the best course of action.  Max’s calm and patient demeanor helped me get through a major remodel of my rental property.   I feel very fortunately that  he is my contractor and he will be doing another job for me soon.   I have learned to trust his advice and his workmanship.

In this remodel, Contractor Bob Borosky took out a wall, rewired, re-plumbed, added insulation, drywall, plastered, installed all cabinetry, flooring, back-splash tile, installed and hooked up all appliances, including 48" range, wine cooler and warming drawer. While traveling, I realized I wanted an under-sink water filter installed.  I did a little research on line, emailed Bob and asked if he could do this.  He did a little research himself and recommended a different filter.  He then bought it and installed it before we got home.  Having remodeled kitchens for  over 40 years, Bob's input was invaluable and much appreciated.  Bob helped us select the finish on the cabinetry, the quartz counter top, and the many finishing touches that overwhelmed me.  He completely designed and built the cabinetry around the hood vent, and the best part was his finding, buying, attaching and finishing a beautiful "overlay" that really dressed up the hood vent.  I wanted extra shelving, and la voila!  it was added. He even fashioned toe-kick drawers to give me a little more storage space.  He raised the island by two inches so I could have plenty of electric outlets in the island--that particularly impressed the inspector. If you want constant communication and hand holding, he may not be the contractor for your job.  Our having complete confidence in his work product and blind faith helped us get through the process. He rarely works past 3 PM and never works on weekends. Have patience, for he will not share your sense of urgency.  Bob works and charges by the hour, time & materials, so don't expect a detailed bid.  He gave us a ball park figure before the job started.  Although the job turned out less complex than he expected (the wall he thought was weight-bearing turned out to not be weight-bearing), the job still exceeded that labor & time target amount.  At the end of ten weeks, we have a fabulous kitchen.  It is elegant and beautiful, and it has exceeded our expectations. Bob Borosky is a perfectionist and he won't rest until your job is perfect. His experience equips him to handle any curve ball your project might throw at him.  He reliable, thorough and knowledgeable and you won't regret using  Custom Home Construction.

CBOHN HEATING & SHEET METAL
The installation of the heater was fine; it was when it stopped working less than two years later that the problem occurred.  One of Bohn's technicians looked at it, re-lit the pilot and said to call again if it went out because that would mean that it was probably a valve.  I asked him if I should put a bit of willow fencing around the outside vent because maybe the wind was blowing out the pilot and he said no, that would collect gas and make it go out again.  The heater did go out the next day and I called Bohn, speaking with the owner Larry.  I explained the problem to him and he said he'd call Williams (the company that made the heater) and see about warranty coverage and the cost of the valve.  Larry called back the next day and said that the part was not covered and that Williams had quoted him $150 plus tax and shipping.  When I asked Larry about his hourly rate, he said it would be $120 an hour but that he would charge me $98 for sending the guy out.  When I told him that it did not make sense to me to charge an hourly rate as well as an initial fee he actually raised his voice at me telling me that his overhead was high so he had to charge for time on the road.  I asked him,  "Ninety eight dollars and the guy was only here for ten minutes?"  Larry said,  "I guess he has to charge a minimum of a half an hour, I don't know."  But, Larry is the owner of the company; he sets the policy.  I told him that I'd call back after getting a few other bids.       I called Williams, the manufacturer of the heater, directly and the guy who answered, Vince, went on-line while on the phone with me and found several valves for my heater, ranging from $108 to $140.  Vince also told me that the fact that the technician from Bohn Heating and Sheet Metal said that if the heater went out again it was probably the valve showed that the technician did not know what he was talking about and that I should look for a new contractor.  He said that the valve would be one of the least likely problems.  The most likely was the pilot generator, then the thermostat wiring or the actual thermostat itself.      I called a new Heating and Sheet Metal contractor, Kirk Ask who said,  "It sounds like it's the pilot generator, but I won't know until I see it."  Since that was exactly what Vince from the heater manufacturer said that the contractor should say, I felt confident.  Kirk came out the same day, re-lit the pilot and said that the wind was blowing out the pilot and that I should put up a little fencing around it, loose enough to let the air through but not so tight as to let gasses collect.  When he started to leave, I said,  "Wait, I haven't paid you."  "Happy New Year!"  he said.  "If I had done any work, that would be different, but I didn't do anything.  See you!"
