Business Description: About Us: In 1989 Bruce Neal started his career with a reputable Pool company in La Mesa California, Catalina Pools, as a plaster chipper. From there he quickly advanced to pool tile & coping, masonry walls, and all types of pool decks. He soon worked his way up to running the jobs for this company, where he fine tuned his knowledge and craft. At that point he found that he had a real passion and knack for masonry. In the year 2002, when the company he worked so hard for retired from the pool business, Bruce took that opportunity to follow his dream, and continue doing what he love to do by getting his contractors license. Through the years he has been able to expand and master his masonry skills. Along with that, he has built and trained a great crew of skillful hardworking guys, who, like Bruce, take pride in their workmanship. A crew that he is proud and confident to represent our company. Here at Tru-Bond Masonry, we believe in quality and integrity. We strive for excellence. Our goal is to achieve happiness and satisfaction in our customers. We care. . . Serving San Diego.

Recent Review: I first met Mike Larsen when he came out to give me a free estimate.  While he was measuring the project, he identified a unique plumbing issue that would need to be addressed before he could do the work. When I got 2 more quotes, neither contractor noticed the plumbing issue.  One quote was outrageous and the other quote description of the project was 1 sentence.  Selecting Tru-Block Masonry was an easy choice. Mike and his team arrived and quickly got to work and each day they cleaned the area at the end of the day.  Now I have a beautiful, professionally installed stone veneer on the front of my house.  His work was so good, I referred him to a friend and I will use him again for another project.

ABerkley Construction Inc
Our house was built in the 1950s and it desperately needed a facelift.  We had also recently completed a room addition in the back of the house and the designs did not match.   The transition between the two parts of the house was blaringly obvious.  We needed to have the old siding replaced, a large portion of the stucco re-done or repaired, some electrical as well as various smaller cosmetic changes. We researched approximately 4-5 general contractors on Angie?s list, all of which had excellent reviews.  It was a big decision for us and was the first time we had hired a contractor for such a big job. Needless to say, we had several questions and little knowledge as to how the process would go.  The project manager, Robert Barnes, became our main point of contact and was always very quick to respond.  He patiently and thoroughly answered all of our questions and even met with us after hours on at least a couple occasions in order to accommodate our schedule ? all before even signing a contract.  When we were presented with a quote and later a contract we found them to be itemized and very clearly defined, something we did not see with other companies. At least one contractor we talked with wanted a large down payment upfront, which is not in accordance with the laws governing general contractors.  With Berkley, the payment schedule was in accordance with the law and very transparent. In fact, a significant amount of work was already completed before we even received the first invoice. While not the lowest bid ultimately Robert?s demeanor along with the professionalism of the company led us to choose Berkley Construction for our project. Upon signing the contract we were given a start time and approximate completion date and as promised our project started on the expected date. The crew showed up on time each morning and worked diligently throughout each day. Robert made it a point to touch base each morning to communicate progress and made sure to continue to answer all of our questions as well as address any concerns or changes as they came up. He really listened to what we said and clearly understood our concerns and priorities for the job.  Even without prompting, he demonstrated that keeping within our budget and making efforts to cut costs without compromising quality were on the forefront of his mind. It had been our experience with previous smaller jobs and we had heard from numerous people that it is pretty common for a contractor to be very responsive while trying to gain the contract but then communication quickly becomes less of a priority once they have it.  That was not the case at all with Berkley Construction. Robert was just as easy to reach after we signed and if for some reason he couldn?t take our call he was ALWAYS prompt in returning our call.  As with any construction project, unexpected problems would sometimes arise. If there were any deviations from the plan, Robert was very proactive in communicating what the issue was and letting us know what his plan was to deal with it. In every interaction it was clear that our satisfaction with the progress and quality of the job was their main concern.  Surprisingly, even with the addition of work required, the cost very rarely changed and when it did it was for something that was truly out of their control. Another aspect of working with Berkley construction that we appreciated was their flexibility as the project evolved.  For example, about halfway into our remodel we decided that we wanted to add stone veneer to the front of the house.  Robert quickly arranged several sub-contractors to come out and bid the job until we found the right fit and ultimately helped with many aspects outside of what we considered to be the scope of the original project.  In summary, I am very happy with the experience we had as well as the quality of work completed.  I cannot say enough positive things about them and especially the project manager, Robert.  I give Berkley Construction my highest recommendation.

ACalifornia Smartscape
California Smartscape did a great job designing and constructing our yard just the way we wanted it. I met with and obtained quotes from four contractors. Although California Smartscape didn't provide the lowest quote (they were second-lowest), I saw the great work they did for my neighbor and I liked the people I first met with - Jay, the owner, and Jesse, the project designer - so we decided to hire them. I'm confident we made the right choice in selecting California Smartscape. My wife and I are both demanding, but I think fair, clients - we know what we like and we like to get what we bargained for. Jesse did the design for our yard. He listened to what we wanted, drew up the plans, and discussed with us. We tweaked the design several times, both before and after we hired them, and Jesse was always willing to do what we wanted to ensure we would be happy with the end product. Once construction started, the work crew led by Brett kept the project moving and on track. The worksite was cleaned up at end of every day. If I noticed something that I wanted done differently or that I thought needed more attention, I raised it with Brett and he took care of it. Jay kept in touch with me throughout the two-month work period to make sure I was happy with the work. Jay got more involved onsite toward the end of construction. At that time, Eliel was also brought in to put finishing touches on the project. At all times, I was in contact with Bridget, their office manager, and she was my main point of contact for various items, including scheduling and billing/payment. The majority of the work was completed a couple months ago and Jay and Jesse have been great about addressing final "punch list" items that need attention/touch-up. I've worked with other contractors in the past whose approach to customer service changed after the client signed on the dotted line. That is definitely not the case with California Smartscape. All of the staff, from Jay to Jesse to Brett to Eliel to Bridget, are great to work with and put the customer first. I definitely recommend California Smartscape to help make your outside space a place you and your family can enjoy for years to come.

ATaylorPro Handyman
I was told by our tenant that the master ceiling fan was very noisy. I asked if perhaps the blades were unbalanced which was causing the noise. Kerry did the troubleshooting and said that the motor was dying and it wasn't an imbalance issue at all. I purchased the fan and a new remote at FanDiego (purchasing a much better brand than the one I inherited) and he installed it and now it is working beautifully. He also installed a digital thermostat to replace the old manual kind and also glued some veneer back onto kitchen cabinets that were peeling off. He is very competent, punctual and reasonable ($150 for the ceiling fan and I can't remember what he charged for the other items). He has been doing handyman work for quite a while (having worked with his father when he was a young boy). He has tools to die for. I have tried two other handymen on Angie's List; and one is great but hard to get ahold of because he is so busy, and the other made me feel uncomfortable--commenting on possessions in my house and garage, and he also was not a perfectionist. Kerry is a perfectionist and very professional, which is quite refreshing these days.

ADoug Stephenson Fine Wood Working & Home Services
Doug refinished some teak cabinet doors on my boat. These were very tricky, as the veneer is thin and delicate, and they needed the old varnish sanded off. I was worried that sanding might damage the veneer, but no problem. The doors look like new, and teak veneer is intact! He also solved a unique problem for me at the marina. I needed to figure out a way to stow my kayaks. He designed and built a very nice solution, using pressure treated wood, to survive the salty environment. Happy with the results of these jobs, I also had him replace a window at my house. Hire this guy only if you want the work done on time, at a reasonable price!

AGreener Rhythms
Jamie is more than a handyman, he is truly a creative artist. He solved the problem of trying to match a veneered hutch and measured accurately for the location of where to hang them, with my licenses and white board. I have hired Jamie previously to take off a rotted floor from a metal shed, and by himself he figured out how to lift the large shed, and replaced the floor perfectly. Jamie is truly a pleasure to work with. The reason for the B grade on responsiveness is because he is very busy and finds it hard to get back to his many customers. All in all he is an A+ guy.

AWestern Outdoor Design & Build
Our home's appearance went from distressed to something you would see on a magazine cover. The master planned design, materials and craftsmanship exceeded my lofty expectations. Several homeowners in the area have literally knocked on the door to ask about our experience and approximate cost to transform their homes. Western's staff is professional, timely, informed, prepared, and responsive. Joe's master planning is without equal, he has a vision that blew us away. Bill's landscape design provided a significant reduction in water usage while exponentially enhancing the appearance of our home. Alejandra efficiently communicated and networked between a variety of stakeholders; and the crew were polite, knowledgeable, hard working, and really good at what they do. I would recommend Western Pavers to my immediate family and friends alike, Western Pavers has earned my trust and repeat business. On a scale of 0-10, I can objectively rate Western Pavers a 10.

ACalifornia Smartscape
We really enjoyed working with California Smartscape. From start to finish they were a pleasure to work with. It started out with an appointment with a designer named Andrew who was very helpful in deciding the scope of work and material selection. They were very reasonable when it came down to the numbers and did not feel like we were getting taken advantage of by any means.  Once the work began we were introduced to Leo who managed the crew and all the work.  He was awesome! I wish everyone who worked for us was like Leo, he ever made me feel like a bother and was such a delight to have around the house.  He never forgot anything I told him and always answered his phone when I called.  My kids will miss him he was always so kind to them whenever he was here Aside from the people the craftsmanship of the pavers and stone work was fantastic. Their attention to detail was wonderful!  When people ask about the work we did I say that California Smartscape made it very easy and the process from start to finish was very seamless and there were hardly any surprises which typically come up during construction.

ASan Diego Landscape Solutions Inc
From the very beginning of this project, Brett was very responsive. We had four separate quotes and Landscape Solutions gave us the lowest quote. When we asked Brett if we could modify our plans to reduce the quote even more, he was very open to that and offered us several solutions. Throughout the landscaping project, Brett was on the site almost daily to ensure everything was completed as planned. His work crews were courteous, professional and hardworking. He offered advice on plants and was always willing to incorporate things that we wanted to do, like creating an area for a fountain. He addressed any and all concerns during our walk-through, even on little things, like moving a vine so that it was centered. One of our main concerns was drainage, as our yard and garage would flood every time it rained. Brett was very conscientious about ensuring that our concrete was poured to fix that problem, and we can report that with all of the rainstorms coming through in the last month we have had no flooding problems whatsoever. We are very pleased with our yard - we have received numerous compliments and we would not hesitate to use Landscape Solutions again when we redo our backyard. We feel like we received an outstanding landscape design at an excellent price!
