I contacted Glenn to have the logs and line of gas fireplace removed, a new one re-installed, and the ballast for a couple of fluorescent lights replaced. After taking measurements of the fireplace and eyeballing the lights, he promised to call with an estimate for the work "in a couple of days." Three days later I call him. He says that he is looking for a better price on a fireplace, and will be able to give a proper estimate "in a couple of days." Five days later I call him. He apologizes for "losing my number", but has managed to secure a "great deal" on a new fireplace. He quotes me an estimate of $800 including materials. Though it seemed exceedingly high, I agreed to the price. Due to my work schedule, I am unable to schedule a time for the repairs in the afternoon or evening, so on Monday 10/17 Glenn agreed to do the job on the morning of Friday 10/21 or Monday 10/24. I tell him that Monday would be better, but that I would accommodate him if necessary. Glenn says that he will "call to let me know". On 10/21 I still hadn't heard from him, so, assuming that he would be coming by on Monday, I called to confirm. "We agreed to Friday or Monday," he says. "We'll, it is Friday today, so I am assuming you'll be coming on Monday." "Monday. Monday. And you say I have to be there by 1 pm?" "No. You have to be done by then because I have to go to work." "Any day you can do it in the afternoon?" "No." "Glenn was incredulous. "Even weekends? "I explained to him that I work in a restaurant which stubbornly stays open for business on nights and weekends because, as it turns out, that is when people like to go out to eat. I also explained that I explained all of this to him before and I thought that we had agreed on a date. There was a longish pause, but before he could come up with another silly excuse for being so unresponsive, I told him to forget it, that we won't require his services, that we will find someone who values our custom enough to call me back. Glenn seemed like a decent and totally normal guy during our brief interaction, so I will assume that the reason he was unable to devote even the bare minimum of attention to my request is that he is too distracted with other work and NOT, as it seems, suffering from an untreated cognitive disorder.
