We explained to Dawn that this would just be a short-term account in light of the fact my father's house was for sale, and asked her if ADT engaged in those type of contracts without any early termination clause. She adamantly stated that they did. She offered to add an updated keypad to his equipment, but we stated that we didn't want it if it would obligate us to a longer contract. She stated that it would not and she was happy to "give" this to us. There were four people in the room and we asked her very pointed questions about whether we could cancel at the time the house sold without penalty and she said yes, adamantly and enthusiastically, to every question. She presented us with a contract and when I questioned the $1,200 per year charge, she told us that was just something they have to add in, but it wouldn't apply to us. She said that was just for people who keep the equipment for a year or more. Well, imagine our surprise when we cancelled in April after the house sold, and were told we had a $923 charge to cancel. She had locked us in to a 3-year contract. The type was so small, you would never have seen it and she repeatedly denied that she was doing that very thing when we signed the contract. It was the day after my father's funeral and I had to get his house packed and return to my home, which is in another state, so I did not scrutinize the contract as I normally would have. She blatantly lied to us about the terms of the agreement. We all hear her lie, but didn't know it at the time. We gave these people our business for four months and were told we could cancel anytime without penalty by this rep. We had no reason to believe otherwise, but the company is suing us for $923, in spite of the fact that we were legally defrauded, following the exact definition of the law. We are not working with the Attorney General of Arkansas, their Fraud Division and I literally will fly back to Arkansas if we go to court. Come to find out, ADT has over 5,000 complaints against them and a number of class-actions suits for deceptive business practices. We contacted the rep who perpetrated the fraud and she hung up and won't take our calls. We were given the option to extend an existing contract with the company to make the $900 charge go away, but I don't want deceptive people handling the security for my house and am in the process of canceling any existing business we have with ADT on other properties. This outfit is very shady. I would advise anyone to steer clear of ADT, or know that whatever they tell you is worth nothing. The only thing that matters is what their contract says, and the reps lie outright -- not shadow the truth but boldly lie. ADT will not engage with anyone in anything less than a 3-year contract, except in CA where it is 2 years. This is what we found subsequent to this whole debacle. I would especially caution anyone who deals with Dawn Powell to shut the door in her face. Anyone who has so little conscience to defraud a grieving family a day after the funeral of a family member should be put in jail.
