Recent Review: After carefully reading several reviews on Angie's List for other home inspectors, I visited the Ace website for an online quote.  About five minutes after submitting the quote, my phone rang and I spoke to Jeff Aiken (owner) who is very knowledgeable with an engineering background.  As home inspections are time sensitive following the offer acceptance, Jeff scheduled my home inspection for a couple days later so that he would have plenty of time to write the report and I would have time to read it and make my decision. He arrived promptly at the exact time he said he would and spent seven hours exploring every nook and cranny of the property! When I arrived at the location, Jeff pointed out some items that would require repair in the near future as they presented safety issues and also made suggestions as to what would make the home "move-in ready."  He spent about two hours underneath the house inspecting the foundation, plumbing and duct work; three areas considered to be a major concern in older homes.  His focus on health and safety of his clients is what really puts his services ahead of all the rest.  Jeff spent about 15 hours compiling a beyond-thorough report consisting of 128 pages and close to 350 digital photos.  He included what was good about the house, maintenance tips, safety concerns and issues requiring further attention.  He literally left no stone unturned!  The original quote that he gave me was the exact price I paid and has been the best $435 I have ever spent.  The report arrived neatly packaged in an email with a link to homegauge.com due to the size of the file.  The website made it very easy to forward the report to my realtor and family members.  My experience with Jeff Aiken is a testament to the effectiveness and accuracy of Angie's List; I recommend Ace Inspections with the highest regard.  Is there an A++ rating on this thing?

Recent Review: I joined Angie's list because I was buying a house in Alabama and live in New Jersey. I wanted to make sure I could find local businesses such as realtors, mortgage brokers, inspectors, etc. as soon as I got to Alabama to shop for homes. Hoods Home Inspection had high ratings and was one of the businesses I considered calling when I found a home to buy. Coincidentally, when I asked a mortgage guy at the bank who he'd recommend, he gave me Hoods Home Inspection. He had personally used them for the home he had recently purchased and was extremely satisfied. That was a good sign :-) I called Hoods Home Inspection to schedule an appointment, but they were fully booked for a week or two. I was on a time constraint and needed to leave town in 2 days so Ella, Mr. Hoods wife, was tremendously accommodating and moved a couple of appointments so he could inspect my home the following day. Alan Hood showed up the following morning, on time, spent approximately 3 hours going over the house, explaining everything to me as he inspected. The house has a crawl space and he made sure the entire space was inspected, finding a couple of things that needed attention. There were several items he found that I would never have known discovered until after moving in. He also gave me suggestions on what needed to be done to fix the issues. He ran the dishwasher, climbed up into the attic, ran the house fan (needed a new motor), discovered a sink leak as well as other issues. Mr. Hood also did think the house was very well built and pointed out many things that were in excellent condition. What I most appreciated about Mr. Hood's way of doing business was that he said, several times, that if I ever have any questions or concerns about my house, I can call him. And he meant it. He made me feel very confident I was buying a house with no major issues. In fact, he was impressed with how the owner maintained the home during the 35 years he lived there. Mr. Hood also gave me pointers on how to maintain various things that need regular maintenance. I am very satisfied with Hoods Home Inspection Service and would recommend him to anyone I know in need of their services. I feel very lucky to have found them.

I contacted Mr. Brooks for a home inspection on a new home. Immediately upon meeting him I had the feeling he was honest and trustworthy which is unusual for me since I do not trust anyone. He was courteous, professional and very thorough. I could not have been more pleased with the outcome. He found problems I would have never known existed. I highly recommend Mr. Brooks and I will definitely use him again.

Mr. Brooks did an outstanding job of thoroughly inspecting our potential home.  He has a very friendly attitude which both my wife and I enjoyed while we asked him a ton of questions being that this could be our first home.  He was very knowledgeable and even offered suggestions on what we could do to fix minor issues.  Overall, we were very impressed and will use Alatech again for any future home inspections.

DHood's Home Inspection Service,
I was pleased with the sales pitch provided by Ella, Mr. Hood's wife. She explained how thorough the inspection would be and how Mr. Hood would walk the entire inspection with me when he was done. She made that point clear to me on two occasions. My wife, who paid Mr. Hood before he was finished (big mistake on our part), also made it abundantly clear that I wanted to walk the job with him when he was done. He said he would need another 3 hours. I showed up at the 2 hour and 25 minute mark and he was gone. No phone call to tell me he was done. No phone call to invite me to meet him for the promised walk through. I called, but according to Ella, he was already "stuck in traffic" and couldn't come back. The next day I got the report. The house had 2 bathrooms, but his report listed he inspected 3 bathrooms. That led me to believe he just copied and pasted from another report. He provided details on a bathroom that didn't exist. There were at least two permanent light fixtures that did not work - even with new bulbs - that were not even mentioned in the report. The clearly vented hot water heater had "N/A" checked next to hot water heater vent in the report. I believe he had parts of my house confused with another house. I called Mr. Hood and explained I was unhappy with the report and would like to walk the inspection with him. On the phone he sounded as if he would do the right thing. But when we met, he was a totally different person. Very defensive that I would question his 30 years of experience, however he never gave me a chance to point out the deficiencies. He simply stated he would send me my check back. That part was good. But anyone doing a home inspection knows you are on a timeline. That was wasted time that could have been used on a quality inspection. Bottom line - I would definitely look elsewhere next time.
