The work quality is good but communications between Scottie, the crew worker and me were not so good. Scottie was very nice initially on the phone and asked if he could call me back because he was really busy. I said fine but he didn't call me back. When I called him again two days later, he apologized and said he had been really busy, he forgot my phone number (although it was probably recorded on his cell phone) and he explained to me the current jobs he was working on. He said they would come out Monday and "hang the door" for $100. I tried to explain to him that it was more than just "hanging a door." But I guess it didn't sink in over the phone, because when the crew worker showed up as scheduled two days later, he was expecting to "hang a door." Day One - The crew worker showed up to "hang the door" and didn't have the right tools to do the bigger job I was asking for and he had another job lined up for that afternoon so he couldn't stay the time needed to finish my job. I was surprised that Scottie did not come with him to see what the job entailed since there was some confusion over the job scope on the phone. I told the crew worker that I needed a quote before he got started. He said okay and I'll see you tomorrow. Day Two - The crew worker and 2 ladies showed up around 9 AM (I guess they had to stop by Lowes or something first to get some supplies). At least they had the correct tools to do the job this time. The crew worker asked me if Scottie had called me back to agree on a price and I told him "no" that I had not heard back from Scottie. So we called Scottie on the phone and all verbally agreed that $300 was a fair price for the job. In hindsight, a written professional quote would have been nice. After lunch, the crew worker asked me if I had gotten the wire needed for the job. I told him that Scottie hadn't told me to have wire on hand. We had only discussed me buying a bi-folding door kit and I had. Again, there was frustration for me and for the crew worker with the lack of communication with Scottie. Luckily, my family had some extra wire on hand so the problem (and having to come back another day - so we thought!) was avoided. I mentioned to the worker that since communication with the boss was such an issue, maybe the next job I had should be between just him and I so things would go smoother with no communication issues. About the 2 ladies present - I am not sure why they came. They were friendly and stayed outside or in their car most of the day. They did haul some of the job trash up to the burn pile on-site but I wondered why they spent the whole day with us except for time they left to go get a child from school and, ironically, the child ended up at the house too for about an hour. The crew worker stayed until about 4 PM and said he would have to come back another day to finish up (Great - another day my husband or I have to take off from work - this will be the third day working with them on a job that was supposed to take 1 day). Day Three - Our crew worker shows up about an hour late with Scottie's father this time. Not sure why Scottie's father came with him, he didn't do much work either, but it wasn't a problem. He stayed outside most of the day and even enjoyed sitting in our swing by the lake. Perhaps these extra people met the worker's transportation needs. Anyway, the worker asked my husband if we had gotten the trim molding Scottie had asked us to get. My husband told him that Scottie, again, had not called us with such requests. Argh! So at this point, Scottie's father offered to go get the supplies (which was a nice gesture) but since we were wanting to use our Lowe's credit card for the supplies, that wasn't an option. So the only other option at this point was for my husband to go get the supplies, leaving the worker and Scottie's father at our house by themselves (I was at work, 45 mins. away) while my husband made the run. We didn't want to send them away because it would have been the next day before they came back and that would have required another day absent from work. Thankfully, it turned out to be okay, but as a homeowner and not knowing the crew well, it left us with an uneasy feeling leaving them at our home unattended! Thank you for being honest people! The work was finally finished up on the afternoon of day three and my husband and I were satisfied with the job. My husband said he would have done the header differently but that it was okay. He said Mike Holmes on HGTV wouldn't have accepted it but that it would do. We gave the worker a check for $300 and discussed with him a deck job and a stairwell painting job price and a supply list needed but the crew worker never returned to paint. One evening shortly after the closet door job was completed; Scottie called and fussed at me because he had gotten wind that the crew worker and I talked about other jobs that didn't include him. He told me I was a terrible client and HUNG UP on me. He didn't even give me a chance to explain why that came about. Geez, no big deal though. I decided to carry on with life. :) The next day, while I was at work, Scottie calls me again and asks where he can mail my receipt for the job since that's "good business practice and all." I told him "good business practice like hanging up on me the other night!" Ha! He apologized and said he was just so mad at the time. In the future, he should apply some anger management techniques before hanging up on someone/anyone - just saying. However, we ended on friendly terms and I told him I didn't need the receipt. But, he also wanted to ask me some questions about his crew worker, regarding whether he had gotten the job to build us a boat house or not. I told him not. Maybe the question of where to mail my receipt was just the means of getting the opportunity to ask further questions about his crew worker (whom he fired the day he got so mad). Regardless, I would not recommend dealing with this company. They are okay but for all the reasons above, I hope to find more professional organization for my next job.
