Recent Review: Finding a roofer that is professional, punctual, and who does not make a bunch of false claims is almost impossible. My roof was initially put on by a rip-off artist who shingled over the old roof when I was not watching, did not cut the ridge vent into the roof and who made a bunch of mistakes leaving me with leaks and a roof that cannot be warrantied. I have had several roofers out since, some ok and some just bad. I have never had a good experience as I did with Fresh Start and Steve. I'm fairly picky, meaning I want it done right and I don't want to be over charged. I also want someone to show up when they say they will. I don't want a bunch of dumb excuses. I don't want a mess. I don't want a dirty looking crew. I don't want to have my yard filled with cigarette butts when they leave. With Fresh start Steve came out and evaluated the work and discussed it with me. Steve is a member of our community, not some drive by roofer form another area who shows up after storms. I showed him the problems I could see and he actually found some pretty serious issues on his own. Over the years I have developed a serious fear of heights so my time on the roof is very limited and some areas of the roof I have to take the word of the contractor for some problems. Some problems I am not able to evaluate on my own so I had to trust that Steve was telling me the truth, and I trusted him. After his initial trip to look at the roof (it was too hot on the metal roof for him to work that day), Steve made two more trips to attempt to repair a metal roof leak which I have had for years damaging the inside of my house. He sealed up the roof in the area, but I still had the leak. He finally said he could not find the problem and he did not charge for this work. He suggested I find someone who specializes in metal roofs to see if they had any ideas. For me, this was fine. He was not the first person to try to help with the leak, but the only honest one who did not charge me alot for a repair that did not work. In fact he did not charge for any of the work he did to try to find and repair this leak. You have to respect a business person who conducts business like this. I now will have to find a specialist who will probably have to get up there with a hose and spend alot of time and money to get to the bottom of it. I respect that Steve suggested I find someone more experience in doing this with a metal roof. Now on the other hand, he found some very serious flashing issues on the rest of the roof. The majority of my roof is shingled. He also found a huge gap at one of my skylights. We were both surprised that I did not have serious water damage from this. The problem was caused by my original roofer. Steve took care of sealing up the sky light. He fixed up the flashing issues and nailed down and sealed areas of shingles which were coming up. His prices for the work he did was fair to the point of generous. He provided a significant value to me as a homeowner with the services he provides. I am confident that he will stand behind his work and be there for me in the future in the event of an emergency or other problems with the roof. The work he did was sound. I understand he is coming behind someone who did a bad job. It is good to know that he will stand behind his repairs even though the problem was caused by someone else. He is an advocate for his customers. He also works with gutter contractors and was able to secure me a better price on gutter work than I could get on my own. I was recently given a quote on gutters for my house by a contractor he actually works with. (I met with Fresh Start and Steve a week after I got the gutter quote). Had I gone through Steve, I could have saved a dollar or two off of the price per linear foot of gutter based on what I was quoted. Now I was OK with the gutter quote I received, but wished I had met Steve and gone through him first. It is also good to know that Steve surrounds himself with and works with other top quality contractors. I know this is a long review, but I spend hours going through reviews myself trying to find a trusted contractor. I hope the review will be helpful. If you are like me, you just want someone who is going to do the job right and don't mind paying a bit more (not alot more) for this service. I have never called back any of the roofers I have worked with before, but I can assure you Steve and Fresh Start will be my roofing contractor for as long as I'm in the area. I have spent days on the computer reading reviews and learning about roofing. I signed up for and took on line classes in roofing to learn as much as I can to make sure the roofers are doing the right thing. I'd do the roofing myself, but an on line class cannot teach you how to get on a roof or carry up 100 pounds of shingles. I have learned that even though I may know alot about roofing, a bad roofer can get alot of stuff by you. Based on his work and conversations with Steve, I am confident he has the experience and roofing education to do the work to the best standards. He is also going to be one of the guys working on your roof. He is not just hiring a bunch of guys to do the work for him while he is off selling other jobs. This is important because as a home owner you don't want to be acting as a contractor managing a crew while the boss is not around. Please also do your work and make sure you get everything in writing. Don't pay for a job until it is completely finished. Make sure you are around when the work is being done. Make sure you are comfortable with your contractor and the price before you start. Talk to more than one contractor when you can.
