ACROSS THE POND
Recent Review: If you have need of a structural retaining wall (greater than 4 ft high), this review is for you. When I purchased my home 17 years ago, it had a railroad tie retaining wall holding up one side of my front yard. I knew it was something that would eventually have to be replaced. It was a neighborhood eyesore, and over the years began to bow out. For the past 8 years I have been reading up on wall design, and examining any walls under construction that I came across. I had gotten several estimates on the work a few years ago, and was shocked at the bids I received. I interviewed each of the contractors I considered, and looked at examples of their work, but was unable to get the work done due to the cost. This year I was better prepared financially, and decided to try again. I began by looking at blocks at Across the Pond, who referred me to Adam Ragland, of Ragland Topsoil and Landscaping. Adam gave me a photo book of the walls he had done previously, and took me on a lengthy tour of walls he built in the Huntsville area. I was VERY impressed. Adam's work was far more advanced than the previous contractors I had considered, and his construction technique fell right in line with the techniques I had studied and observed over the years. His bid, fell in the range of the previous bids I had received, but I was far more confident in his ability to execute the job. This wall, at 8 feet max height, required (by City of Huntsville) a civil engineer to be engaged to develop the plan and monitor the construction. Adam referred me to Bill Kennard of GEO Solutions. Bill submitted a set of engineering plans, which again met my expectations in terms of the design based on my years of research on the subject. I submitted my bulding permit request to the City of Huntsville and upon receipt of my permit, the work began. Adam Ragland does not work multiple jobs simultaneously. He brings his crew to your jobsite and they work YOUR job until they are done. Adam leads the work and is present from start to finish. This was very important to me, as it was on the basis of HIS skill that I made my decision to award the contract to his company. Another point that bears saying. Although he does not advertise this, Adam and his workers are Christian men, and conduct themselves accordingly. No profanity, no drinking, etc., and always respecful to my wife, daughter, and myself. A group of hard working men who have worked together for years and know how to do the job. They show up on time and work hard. Adam and his crew began by tearing down the old wall in a controlled manner. They then constructed the new wall in accordance with the plans provided by GEO Solutions, however, it was obvious that Adam knew how the wall was to be built based on his previous experience. The entire job including teardown and construction took 6 days, and was inspected by GEO Solutions during the construction process. The blocks used were provided by Huntsville Hardscapes, which is now a subsidiary of Across the Pond, where I originally began my inquires. These were 60 lb blocks, which are filled with gravel and tied back into the gravel backfill using a geogrid. This technique results in an integrated wall and backfill which is stable and solid. If you observed any of the overpass construction on the Parkway at Weatherly and Whitesburg a year or so ago, a similar technique was used. The overall contact for my job included resodding my front yard and the area at the base of the wall. Adam delivered a truckload of beautiful topsoil, but installation of the sod was delayed due to rain and inability to cut the sod at the sod farm. I have taken advantage of the delay by installing a sprinkler system in my front yard myself, something I have done before. I am looking forward to getting the sod down and finishing this project. So if you are in need of a retaining wall contractor for an engineered wall ( or landscaping for that matter), I heartily recommend Ragland Topsoil and Landscaping and also give a hearty THANK YOU to Trevor at Across the Pond for referring me to Adam Ragland.

Harmony Landscape & Pond
Recent Review: Harmony responded very quickly and was able to come out for an estimate within a day of contacting them. He was very professional and knowledgeable about ponds and water features. The best thing was he was honest with us about what needed to be done and he had a plan on how he was going to do our job and explained it thoroughly. I enjoyed dealing with Jerome.

Wright's Professional Lawn Care
Recent Review: We had a few weather delays, but he and his crew were prompt and efficient. We added some feature as the project progressed, and his charges were reasonable for change orders. The pond was not cheap, but I can tell he used high quality materials. Friends of mine have paid more for smaller ponds that are not as attractive. His website has some photos of his work.

Clearwater Pools & Construction
Recent Review: Clearwater pools were courteous, professional and knowledgeable.  We really enjoyed working with his team and the work that they have done.  There were a lot of weather delays due to the amount of rain we have had lately but when the weather was appropriate they were there working.

Live Oak Landscape Services LLC
Recent Review: During a previous engagement, Matt had his landscaper draw up plans to improve the backyard and add some landscaping. The initial plan for the landscaping looked nice, although it was also extremely expensive. With my feedback, they modified the the plans and started work. The work was scheduled ~3-4 weeks from signing the contract (reasonable considering the season and weather). Initially they came out to modify the existing irrigation system to support the new beds. They then started on the new beds (removing the sod, adding soil conditioner, and finishing with mulch and the selected plants. They then started digging the hole for the pond, and beginning initial layout of it.  Lawn installation took a couple of days. After the pond was installed, they tested all of the irrigation heads and filled in the pond (they tied it into the irrigation system). Finally they removed the existing sod and resodded the backyard. At the end of each day, Matt's crew cleaned up after themselves (except for the first day they were working on the beds proper, when they left a couple of empty soda cans). They were careful to minimize their use of the driveway (i.e. for mulch / soil / rock dumps), and made sure the garage was still accessible even when they were working / having supplies delivered. The crew was friendly, and made sure to clean up at the end of each day.

Plant Park
Recent Review: We were in search of a landscaper capable of designing a koi pond. There were three landscapers who offered estimates, two never called back. David had drawings and plans and a start and end date for us. The crew came in, started the project within a week. I think the worst part for me was the high cost. Was it worth it? I won't know until the second year starts and the plants are finally mature. We were very visible from the start of the project to the end, and anything we thought of (i.e.: plants, stones and bench) were quickly included into the design. The crew kept the yard free of debris and tools, and when it rained they policed the area prior to leaving. Sod laid where damage happened to grass and overall, I am happy with the work provided.

Dale Webster's Landscaping & Drainage
Recent Review: Mr. Webster did such a wonderful job. And even though he had a huge job to do he always had time to stop and talk and explain everything to me. He and his son worked thorugh some terrible weather -- some of the coldest we have seen in a very long time (December 29 thrugh January 10 2014 -- snow, ice, rain, and more rain). He alwasy presented me with several solutions -- cheapist, not to elaborate, and fancy. He found every way he could to ensure my project was completed to a very high standard without costing a fortune. The finished project was beautiful. To solve my probem he created a small hill behind my fountain and filled it in with lovely stones. Planted trees and ground cover to protect against soil errosion. To force the water away from my house and back out into the street to the storm drain he created dry creek beds with river stones and small paths to cross back over to the pond with flat stones -- not just laid out as a walk way but artfuly placed to create eye catching designs. Yes I paid $6,000 to fix my drainage problem -- but instead of a gravel filled trench which is what most suggested a French Drain they called it, I got the problem solved and yard that is beautiful and inviting. I appreciated his hard work, his honesty, and his willinegness to take time and explain things to me. I should point out I am a lady, senior citizen, lving on my own and he could have just dimssed me at hand as so many of the companies I called for suggestions to fix my problem. Before Mr. Webster came to my rescue I could not go in the back yard due to the mud now I can't stay out of it because it is so beautiful. If you are having a drainage problems, need a landscaper, please give him a call -- you will be glad you did.

We had Jake fill in an in-ground pool and installed a pond in a corner of the pool area. He handled everything from equipment rental, materials and cleanup. He even laid sod over the pool area. Three months later, you can't even tell we ever had a pool. Now we have a pond we can enjoy year round instead of a pool that is only used 3 months out of the year.

ALIVING ART WATER GARDENS INC.
The whole process went quite well.  We met with Jake in June where he fully described his services and what he envisioned for our area.  Having received several glowing recommendations from others that had used him (for example, he installed the water feature in the butterfly house of our local botanical gardens), we asked him to submit a design.  He provided an overall design about a week later that we liked and we gave him the approval to put us on his calendar.  One thing we liked about Jake was he was upfront and honest, letting us know the design might change once he started working the area; he likes to let the area dictate the design, not the other way around.  If it was going to be a significant change, he would stop work and discuss the changes with us.  Luckily he "read" the area correctly the first time and there were no significant changes. Jake's calendar is very full so the first time he could fit us in was mid to late September. Due to delays on other projects that was pushed to mid October, which we don't consider unusual for this type of project.  He estimated it would take 10 days to install; it took 13 mainly due to having to order and wait for a larger pond liner than expected.  Jake's crew was professional, polite, and worked very hard.  They arrived on time and worked the entire time.  He also installed landscaping around water feature and he used quality, sizable plants and didn't skimp on the cost (camellias, gardenias, encore azaleas, hawthorns, etc).  When we asked him to make one change (cement the rock retaining wall so the dog wouldn't knock it down), he agreed with no increase in cost.  And finally, he returned after the install to go over maintenance of the pond equipment and water plants. In short, we are exceedingly pleased with this company, would use them again, and definitely recommend them to anyone considering a water feature.
