Chuck's Backhoe Services
Recent Review: Chuck knew what he was doing. He and his son Chad (who is now taking over the business) answered all questions and provided updates. They started the job earlier than scheduled. They were very meticulous in following up and making sure everything was completed and left in an orderly manner. I am wuite pleased with the level of service and the professional delivery of that service.

DAKOTA DIGGERS
Recent Review: Their prices are reasonable. They have nice equipment that I was able to use. They had a front loader and back hoe that were perfect for around my house because I have to work in tight spaces. They had a small tractor that did all the work I needed to have done. They are good folks and they are good to work with. They have a good business operation.

DEAN CONSTRUCTION & DEV
Recent Review: They were punctual and helpful in replacing the pitless adapter.  He had no problem doing a couple side jobs around my property which didn't take much time and didn't charge us for it.  He took care not to cause damage to our property and trees and level back out our driveway as much as possible.  It's even better than it was as I had him change the grade slightly to improve our parking area.

ALASKA FOUNDATION COATING
Recent Review: The company owner and assistant came for a site visit on 5/8 and performed the work on 5/13. I don't have the expertise to assess the quality of the work performed (that is, how well sealed the wall is), but they appeared to choose appropriate materials and apply them properly. The negative experience I had with the company concerns pricing.  I asked them to itemize their bid of $4500, and they broke it down by $1500 labor, $1000 equipment, $1000 materials, $500 mobilization, $500 GO/A.  During the site visit, they mentioned many possibilities for needed work that might be identified during the job, and the job was characterized as taking at least one very long day, or very likely two days.  In that scenario, the pricing seemed like it might be reasonable. As it turned out, when they arrived on the job, it was clear that they intended to be in and out by 5 pm, because they had another job that evening.  They spent about 4 hours actually working on-site, with additional time for transit, lunch, and swapping out faulty equipment.  The excavator that they rented turns out to have cost them $350, so they marked this up by about 3x--ouch.  Also, the materials that they used were about $300--again, about a 3x mark-up.  Of course, I had already agreed to the bid price, so it's my fault for committing to what turned out to be very overpriced work.  I do find fault with the owner for misrepresenting the cost of the equipment.  He looked me in the eye and said it cost them $1000 to rent the excavator, a John Deere 50G from Airport Equipment Rentals--not true, hence the D for professionalism. I hope that the sealing job will hold up, but I certainly would not hire this company again as my experience tells me that they will overprice a bid and then minimize the work done and time spent.  I respect the need of a company to make money, but the mark-up on equipment and materials here is quite excessive, considering the other line-item values in the bid.  I approached the company about the possibility of a partial refund, due to the job having turned about to be short and the actual equipment and materials cost low, but they were not interested--they pointed out that I accepted the price of the bid, which I did...my mistake in being too trusting!

I called to inquire about getting a bid. He agreed to visit the lot and prepare a bid, but also expressed some frustration that he gets lots of calls for bids, and after putting in the work, he sometimes doesn't even hear back from people. I recognized that is unfair, and offered to pay him 100 dollars for the bid, to be subtracted from the cost of the job if he got the work. After a subsequent phone call to try and arrange a time and further explain the scope of work requested, he determined my job would take more time than he had in his schedule (this was at the very end of the construction season). He apologized sincerely for not being able to do the work. This wasn't ideal, but much preferable to a contractor promising something they then can't deliver. He was very polite and professional in his dealings with me, and I would contact him again for work in the future.

Great, The work was done as a donation I represent a non-profit. Rockwall kindly donated workers, material, and equipment. The work was completed quickly they worked with my scheduling conflict and under a short timeline. They were professional and worked well around other contractors. The quality of work and the attention to detail was much appreciated. We are very thankful and happy with the new playground it looks awesome!

CGUMLEY EXCAVATION INC
The company owner and his son showed up at about 1PM. They dug a very big hole that was full of very wet mud. They had to have a man in the hole at times with a shovel and that was very dangerous.  After the leak was found, they repaired it with a large clamp. They then filled in the hole and leveled it out. Tony and Titus Gumley are very skilled at what they do. Watching them work that excavator was very inspiring. They did a great job and were willing to come on a snowy winter day.  I did learn a very important lesson about doing business with Gumley Excavation. You need to get a written estimate for the cost of the job. When I received the bill, it gave a price and just said, "repaired water line." I asked for a detailed bill and was surprised to see that I was charged $750 to get the excavator there and back to the site. I was also charged for about 2 1/2 more hours of labor than they were there. I know that it doesn't seem like a lot, but at $100 an hour, I thought it was a lot. When I questioned what I thought were overcharges, I was told that the extra labor was to get the excavator out of storage. I would have understood that, except I was charged $750 to move 1 piece of equipment and was charged $600 to move 3 pieces of equipment on a job in August.  We thought that the much larger charge should have covered getting the equipment out of storage.  After a few letters back and forth to Mr. Gumley, he threatened to sue us, so we paid the extra $250 and decided to never call or use any of his other businesses again. When I have been asked about my experience with Gumley, I have said that he does a fantastic job digging and filling in a hole, but whatever you do, Get A Written Estimate.
