Reviews for Installing Decomposed Granite in San Antonio

DJohn's Landscaping
On Nov. 16, 2016 I entered into a contract with the vendor to install dry-laid flagstone with decomposed granite mixed with concrete to an area in my backyard. The work was performed a month later on Dec. 16, 2016. The cost of the work was $3357.72. While the initial work appeared to be of high quality, the decomposed granite was not sealed and most of the product was gone by April 2017. I began to contact the company regarding my concerns in mid-April by email as you cannot get this company on the phone. After two weeks, on April 24, 2017, I received a reply from the President of the Company, John Rodriguez, asking for pictures of the issues which I sent. On April 27, 2017, I received an email from Mr. Rodriguez stating that he would create a work order to install more decomposed granite and a pathway stabilizer to harden. Finally, on May 26, 2017, the 'warranty' work was scheduled. No one from John's Landscaping called to confirm the appointment and I finally reached out to Mr. Rodriguez on his personal phone to ask if this was really going to be done. In short, they sent four (4) employees, most of whom were on their cell phones for the hour or so they were at my residence. No decomposed granite was added. The employees had a small container of path stabilizer which only covered a small portion of the area needed to be covered. On June 11, 2017, I sent a detailed message to their company stating that I would never use or recommend their company again and posted the complaint to several online sites warning other customers. On June 13, 2017, I received an email from Mr. Rodriguez who stated "I regret we could not have made things right". I replied that they should not take money if they cannot perform or warranty the work . Out of the blue, I received a phone call from their Office Manager, Sue Ellen, on June 27, 2017, stating the company was going through some 'changes' and they had found a work order, for warranty work, for my residence, containing the order for the decomposed granite. I told Sue Ellen about my experience with her company and she was very apologetic and asked me to forward any correspondence to her. She replied that she would forward my issues to Chris Rodriguez, Vice President, and 'will be in contact with a solution." I've never heard back from any one. By the way, although the have the BBB logo on their website, they are not BBB accredited.

All the other F reviews nail it. I should have checked. If you’re smart enough to check before paying, then heed these warnings. You’re asking for a disaster. First, they come excavate my driveway, and break my gate. Many promises over and over to fix, never do. Ralph is a nice guy it seems and he makes you comfortable and sympathetic to his issues, but by the time you realize things are going terrible, it’s too late. Second, he keeps making excuses about not having any help that cause multiple delays and then shows up 30 minutes before the concrete comes to finish building forms and placing rebar. The concrete is poured quickly and sloppily. He even has to have me and my son help him because he can never get any labor to help him. He leaves my son alone smoothing a sidewalk. My son is 21 but hasn’t ever done that kind of work. He puts too much water on it, messes it up...it never gets fixed. Third, The quality of the concrete install was terrible. He finally found some help to fix it and they were even worse. Rough edges, inconsistent finishing, slopped concrete over pours and seepage around the forms left behind. I still have a piece of a 2x4 form stuck in my sidewalk. They had to come touch stuff up and they were just no brain labor who couldn’t do anything but EXACTLY what they were told which resulted in a other series of mistakes and redos. What they finally accomplished Is so bad it makes me sick how much I paid. For instance he didn’t excavate for the new sidewalk, just hoed a little and poured a thin undulating path on top of the ground. They made curbs to contain my drive way of varying widths and heights and shapes and finishes. I already mentioned the concrete my son was left to finish on his own. Lastly, They dumped some decomposed granite on top of some weed barrier but they didnt pin it down or excavate (he said he would) or pack it down. It was already blowing away and eroding as soon as they left. While he was working I was continually having to remind him of what he said he would do. Once it looked like they would be finishing and cleaning up and leaving he asked for final payment. Then the workers left all the mess behind. Trash, water bottles, ice cream wrappers, concrete, 2x4s, rebar, big chunks of earth around the side walks, extra pipe and weed barrier just all over the place. He kept promising to come and then not showing up over and over for almost 4 weeks before I gave up. Gonna have to pay someone else to fix what they can and leave the rest looking like crap. Take heed: Every part of this project was a disaster. Other reviews have said Ralph will blame family issues and labor troubles and never get around to doing things right. That’s exactly what he did to me. I don’t know what I did to deserve such treatment. It may not be all his fault, I felt bad for his bad luck to an extent but either way, if he can’t deliver, then he shouldn’t be promising. I was pretty easy going the whole time. Too much so. He was very attentive when he wanted money but when they left this mess, he never seemed to be able to get by again even to see how bad they left things. This whole experience represents the worst we all have come to expect with hiring contractors, and why we all hate having to hire them. Last thing he told me was that he had to get a regular day job, so maybe I’ll be the last one who hires him. He doesn’t seem to have the time or manpower to run a landscaping service. I should have known better. He got me. I’m such a stupid gullible sucker. Never again.

I thought I would have to wait to have this relatively small job done, but my $2500.00  job was treated as if it was a $25.000.00 job.   The time from  proposal to finished walkway was less than a week.   The path was completed in two days and is beautifully constructed.  The crew did a great job with the cleanup, too.  Bob was true to his promise that I would have classy looking path.

I got this companies name from Angie's list and at the time they had a B grade. I had Architectural drawing and detailed plans from and quot;Morris Dudleyand quot; they were great plans very clear and easy to understand. I should have been alarmed that on the first day the sub contractors didn't have a copy of the plans. Mr. Northrop fail to give clear instructions to his subs. The only bright spot was the pergola they built in my back yard. To many times in the last 3 months yes a job that should have taken 2 weeks lasted 3 months way to many screw ups occurred. From plans being were lost ,yes 4 sets, plans not being followed, to few plants and over poor effort I finally fired mr. Northrop and paid him 3,00.00 jus to go away. Don't use this company they couldn't find their rear end with both hands.

ABURNS LANDSCAPE AND NURSERY
Burns Landscaping was very responsive throughout the entire process.  Travis and Greg examined the area to be landscaped, and gave me a quote within 24 hours.  Work began within 10 days, as Rudy and his crew tore out the old grass, and replaced one patch with mulch and a beautiful river rock pattern.  My other bed was expanded to the property line, using decomposed granite and metal edging.  All work was done the same day. I found the staff there more than willing to listen and also to recommend changes to my plan that made sense, especially in light of the current drought.

ADown to Earth Landscaping and Lawn Care
Jim and his crew were great. I had them put in steel bed edging, create new beds, lay new sod, refresh mulch and decomposed granite and remove stones and debris. They hauled off 40,000 lb of rock from our house. The work was done exactly as promised. The crew worked hard and were courteous and neat. The price was the best we got from various landscapers. They even came back on a Sunday to fix a sprinkler leak they accidentally created. I will hire them again.

Larry was very professional and listened to what I wanted done submitting a comprehensive proposal. The crew, headed by Ms. Tonie Mari, was very ambitious and competed the project quickly and completely. Everyone was sensitive to my requests and worked hard to achieve the exact look I was striving for in the creation of the project. Tonie had a eye for detail and made sure every part of the project was to my satisfaction. In the fall I will be calling them back to complete some projects I have planned for the backyard.

Recent Review: Doing business with John's Landscaping was a pleasure from start to finish.  John came to the house to discuss the project.  I told him what we wanted in general terms.  He is extremely knowledgeable and creative....and obviously loves his work.  We left the design details up to him and never regretted it for a moment.  Everyone with whom we had contact.....John, the crew that worked here, the ladies in the office....were all first class professionals.  We will contract with this company again....indeed, we look forward to it.....and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
