Reviews for Portland Garage Remodelers

FRose City Maintenance & Remodeling
I'm going to be doing a HUGE remodel. Garage addition, bedroom/master bath remodel and dig out/remodel and addition of bedroom in basement. Called this company as was one that was recommended to me. The guy came out in early December and came back a day later was a couple of sub-contractors. He said he would have an estimate for me right after the Christmas holiday. Never heard back from him so I called him again in mid to late January. He told me he had gotten busy and would have something for me in about a week. Never heard back from him again. What a waste of my time. Maybe I'm lucky to have learned about his lack of professionalism before I hired him. I have two other contractors that I'm working with and I'm sure either will do a great job.

I wish Angie's List has this internal communication function to allow members to contact each other to verify the facts behind their review. Recently I used one contractor, Handyman Northwest LLC, Aaron Mccoy. I bought a rench house and needed a lot of remodeling. Initially he gave me a quote on items that I wanted him to address, such as intall brand new whole kitchen that we bought from IKEA (I gave whole kitchen away and somebody else reparied drywall and painted entire house before I found him), etc. during the process, here and there we expanded the scope of the work. i did ask him for contract. he said ok but he never really gave me one (he had an initial quote, but never gave me a contract). I trusted him but it was supposinglhy a two weeks project job by the time he was threating me to pay him money which was a few days after July 4th, he still did not entirely complete. He told me that he finshed but he did not. for exampel, in kitchen, he did not install hardwares, i.e. kitchen cabints do not have handles on them. He replaced originaly vinyl floor with laminate, but the transition line between kitchen laminate and living area carpet he just left without doing anything, until today I have the carpet at the line laying around. the sinck cabinet doors he did not install. He told me that he was short of one set of hinge(?) he just left it like that and claiming that he "finished". we converted garage into recreation room. He re-did the bathroom there. but he did not put mirro back on, so no mirror there right now. and he suppose to replace a cadet heater. he removed the old one, left the wire there, did not install a new one. the original shower area since we won't need it I wanted a two bowl sink there. (I will use the new room as a preschool classroom and run a homeschool there). to hide the concrete stem wall that came from original shower, he build a plat form and lay laminate to cover it, but there is no edge/cover at the joint between top horizontal piece and the two vertical sides. He told me by the time he "finished" and asked me to pay him on site (otherwise he would pay lien on my property) that I could go anywhere and get the edge piece adn put it on... Anyway, I found him thru craigslist initially since he responded to my ad and gave very good price. but I did check him on angieslist. he only had two reviews. both are similar as my experience, initially the homeowner was happy with him then turned bad. I did ask him about those, and he "explained" to me that one was that he did not have the snake to fix the drain problem (and I had sympathy in him and advised him that next time in such case he should communicate better with the home owner), and he also explained another report saying that when he finishe the job the door that the homeowner provided was not right and it took the homeowner antoher two weeks to order a new one and by the time the homeowner got the door he did not have time any more.... I trusted him and also because the quote he gave me was attractive and I was desperate to finish the project so can started to use the house. when i think back, has Angie's list have this function that allow members to communicate each other, i would have sent email to those two home owners and verify the facts with them. and possibly that I would found out his words are not entirey same as from the homeowners. Aaron Mccoy obviously charged me extra hours that he did not really work on my project. this is my rental property. My own house is 5 minutes away. I drive by the house eveyr day. I know when he was there and when he was not there pretty much. He promised me to not to take another project until he finished mine. but he was almost never really worked at my house during the week. he might show up one day around 10am then took off around 2pm and did not show up the day after. He did come to work there on Saturdays. Initaly I did ask him "what happened" then pretty soon I did not ask him any more since no use and no fun to force him to make lies such as "headache, or kids sick or something". Obviously becasue the house was empty nobody living there yet. so he try to work somwhere else during the week then come to my house on Sat to make it up a bit. but this has delayed the project for at least a month. and at end, he charges me whatever hours he wanted, and he demanded the payment the day before he "will finish". if I don't pay him by that day, he would "put lien" on my property. My feeling is that he over charged me at least $1000, plus he let me reimburse him the materials/tools feel that he did not use on my project (my deal with him was that $30 per hour labor, I pay for all materials).I am in process of filing a complaint him with Oregon CCB, Contractor's Board. at meanwhile if you are considering using him and wants to verify the facts that I stated here, feel free to contact me 971 506 8838.
