Reviews in Pittsburgh to Install or Replace Heat Pumps

ASouth Hills Electric LLC Heating & Cooling
The service guys were great. South Hills took the order, but the service guys admitted they had never worked on a pool heat pump in his 35 yrs. of servicing. He said he would do his best to figure the problem out. Two men worked for 2 hrs., but were unable to rectify the issue. They charged me the minimum of $109. The service guys were wonderful, but said there company should never have taken the order.

ACITY PLUMBING HEATING & AIR
My heat pump quit working at the end of last cooling season. It is a very old Rheem heat pump. City's technician, Rob, came out today. It quit working because the pressure was too high due to dirty coils. Rob went over the unit with me and explained very well what caused the problem, thoroughly cleaned the unit and it is now running and putting out nice cold air! I was very pleased with the service and I learned alot about my heat pump. I should note that the bill was for $ 136 but I had a $20 off coupon from their website.

I was very pleased with the whole experience. I had ask Wade to come out and give me a quote on replacing my 40 year old furnace and the six year old heat pump. The heat pump was not old but was causing me a lot of problems. John arrived and looked over the system and even though I was willing to replace the heat pump they assured me that it didn't need replacing and could be repaired. The price they quoted based on other quotes was very fair. Included in the price was a condensing unit for the heat pump and purging of the Heat pump system and new refrigerants. The day of the installation the two installers arrived promptly worked all day and completed the installation by late afternoon.  The installed the furnace, heat exchanger, condenser, ultraviolet light, new duct work, and auxiliary equipment. They also purged the heat pump and added the new refrigerant. Toward the end of the install Matt arrived to adjust the oil furnace. The day after the installation John returned to further adjust the furnace and heat pump. He spent the best part of the morning checking over the system with specialized equipment and making sure everything was working as specified. The system has been working well even the repaired heat pump. The personal I dealt with at Wade Heating and Cooling were professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. The best part of the experience was they didn't try to oversell. They presented several options and I selected what I wanted, I never felt pressured.

Air Systems Mechanical has cost me over 1000 hours of sleep. I hired them to install a brand new top of the line heater 3 years ago and there have been noise and vibration issues since the day it was installed. The equipment has been blamed from the beginning. They tried to solve the problem for around a year and made no progress. I got a call from Sam the owner and he basically told me to take my business elsewhere. I brought up online reviews and he agreed to continue troubleshooting. Various other steps were tried with no success. Trane sent a field rep and an engineer to check the equipment and even replaced the outdoor unit. The noise and vibration remained. Around the 3 year mark Air Systems Mechanical decided to walk away and leave it as my problem. In my last phone call with Sam he called me a difficult consumer, told me not to bother him anymore, and hung up on me. I was left with two apparent but equally unacceptable options. I could either learn to live with very little sleep in the winter or trash the system I just finished paying off and buy something else. I scoured the internet looking for a third option. Finally I came across an installation manual for the unit posted by a HVAC company in Texas. I noticed several discrepancies between the manual and the actual install. I emailed Sam and his service manager to let them know and offered to remove my negative reviews if they could rectify the situation. My email was ignored and used against me in one of their replies saying something about “giving into my demands”. Next I posted excerpts from the install manual and what I found with the actual install. In attempting to refute me online and telling me everything that they had done correctly they unwittingly led me to what I believe is the root of the problem. The PVC pipe that runs through the concrete block to connect the outdoor and indoor unit is completely loose in the wall. They claim it was sealed with mortar and silicone when the unit was installed. I have provided pictures and it is obvious this was not done. It looks like the original sealant from when the house was built 30 years ago with big gaps between the PVC and concrete. I now know this is what is referred to as system isolation. It is explicitly stated in the installation manual that this needs to be done properly to alleviate sound and vibration transmission. I am confident correcting this will solve the problem. I will update once I know for sure. Air Systems Mechanical has responded to all my posts with lists of reasons why the noise and vibration issues are not their fault. What they have not done is addressed the lack of proper system isolation (as described in the manual) and explained why the PVC (as shown in the pictures) was not secured and sealed correctly when the system was installed. At this point any response from them other than an apology and an offer to rectify this is just further evidence of how far they are willing to go to shirk responsibility and try to cover up their mistake. All the employees I worked with at Air Systems Mechanical were extremely friendly and professional. They were so focused on a system issue I can almost forgive them overlooking this installation issue. The way however I have been treated by Sam the owner is inexcusable.

The installation of the new system went very smoothly. Jason and his crew were right on time. They were very meticulous in making sure that everything was installed correctly and functioned as intended. Jason provided the equipment we needed at a reasonable price and had it installed in the promised period of time. Can't do much better.

Salesman and owner, Sam, was great. Technicians were professional and tidy. They worked hard until the job was done. The install took a total of three days. Only had one problem, which was with a person in the office. I spoke to Sam directly about it and he said he addressed the problem.

BKnoechel Heating Co
We have been having issues with my Lennox heat pump for about 2 years now. The pump continuously failed and shut down. Knoechel tried everything to fix it for us (the pump is relatively new). After about the third time the pump failed on us, Knoechel stopped charging for the service calls because this was happening so frequently. In January, they were able to finally figure out that a valve was malfunctioning and fix it. Fortunately, the valve was covered under our warrenty. Overall, I would recommend Knoechel because they tried everything to fix the pump (I'm not certain how I feel about Lennox). Everyone is very professional, prompt and courteous.

Recent Review: The team arrived, and since I have an outside basement entrance, had the old furnace removed before I even knew they were there. On the afternoon of day 2, a second team arrived and installed the computerized thermostat in minutes. Team 1 had the entire system, or should I say all three systems, installed and operating afternoon of day 2, then both teams cleaned all areas involved and spent about 45 mins. explaining the whole thing to me. With today's technology that's boder line rocket science, but i learned. As a recently adjudged disabled vet, I needed something simple. The Miller Plumbing and Heating teams are fast, professional, efficient, clean, and very personable. The office manager (Marie) had informed us we'd receive Miller's discount for cash, which was generous enough, but a day after the job, called us and stated that she had reworked the math and discovered we qualified for more rebate $$ from Trane, and 2 days later that check arrived! Now, I admire greatly, meticulous workmanship, that's very rare these days. But, to find tradespeople with unparalleled honesty....that's almost unheard of. They could have kept the second rebate, and we'd have still been happy. But no, their sense of business ethic wouldn't allow for that. We'd paid fair measure and the rest according to marie, was ours.
