Spanky and his wife, Sandy, own Low Cost Maintenance. I wanted to paint the exterior of my house, but I knew there was some wood rot to be removed. (It is about a 1500 sq ft house built in the 1920s.) Spanky and Jason, a man he employs sometimes for larger jobs, spent three days removing the rotted wood and replacing it so that the new boards would match the existing soffits, which are tongue and groove construction. They scraped loose paint from the soffits and gables, applied a case of caulk, and painted with primer on the areas that would be difficult for me to reach (I plan to do the painting myself). They worked three long days for this price. I've had Spanky do many small projects for me over the last year. Some handymen will do a slap-dash job, simply to get something finished, but Spanky is NOT like that. He may take longer to complete the job, but you can be sure it's done right, and if you're not happy, he will do whatever he can to make it right. There are two things that may make some people uncomfortable: He works on a cash-only basis (no checks, no credit cards), and when he's going to be working outside of someone's house for an entire day, he may want to bring his dogs, unless you tell him not to. (I actually liked having his dogs there, helping to guard the house.) On another occasion Spanky installed a glass screen door, replaced a rotted threshold, installed a rain cap over the doorway and crawled under my laundry room addition to install some supports to keep the floor from feeling bouncy. (I had purchased the door in advance.) For his 5-6 hours of labor, he charged $200. I thought it was a bargain. Another time I had a solid wood exterior door that had gotten quite swollen after heavy rains. Spanky and Sandy came over about 7 p.m. after I got off work. He removed the door, took off the doorknob and bolt lock, shaved and sanded the door, then rehung it (he did it a few times until he was sure the door closed correctly). He charged me $40. My only hesitation about writing this review is that now he might get so busy that he won't have time to work for me as often! He also does tile, patios, fences, cabinets, counters, landscaping, tree trimming, decks, and light repairs of plumbing, electrical and appliances.
