Recent Review: Peter is very thorough with every aspect of his work. He worked with me and my husband to design a deck that would suit our needs, complement our house, and stay within our budget. We were very pleased with the results of the project and love our new deck. Being a structural engineer, we were extremely confident with his expertise. A safe and attractive deck was paramount for us. He did run into an issue outside his expertise and he guided us in finding another professional to correct it. We can't speak highly enough on our experience with Peter, and would hire him again.

White Crane Construction LLC
Recent Review: White Crane Construction responded immediately to our request to provide a proposal. The initial meetings with White Crane Construction were held promptly and managed efficiently and the proposal was very clear regarding scope of work. All coordination work including communication regarding needs for dumpster and storage were given well in advance. Materials were ordered and delivered as promised. All milestones for the demolition, repair and reconstruction were met. Housekeeping was excellent during the construction and did not interfere with our household. The original budget was accurate and there were no cost additions. The White Crane Construction Supervisor communicated with us daily on progress and resolved issues quickly. White Crane Construction brought in a structural engineer to verify the issues with the deck and den support structures. The original builder from 2000 had constructed our home with major structural defects. Deck and den supports, footings and concrete and deck joist supports were all inadequate and White Crane Construction and their engineering consultant worked together to address and correct all of these defects. A final waldown was completed and punchlist items were completed quickly and to our satisfaction. We would certainly use White Crane Construction and have recommended them to others.

Mattson Macdonald Young
Recent Review: We originally attempted to get quotes directly from various contractors to remove a structural wall in the middle of our basement (and replace with a single beam). When it became obvious that the contractors did not know how to price this with what size beams or columns we decided to get a structural engineer directly (rather than as part of the contractor's scope). Mattson MacDonald were the most cost effective and because I am an engineer also I believe they were able to complete this using our drawings and measurements (without a site visit). The site visit seemed to be the cost difference that other structural engineers were not able to do without. Therefore, without the site visit their quote was half (or less) than all other quotes (all others included a site visit). Mattson MacDonald were very professional and they provided drawings with more than enough options (multiple sizes of LVLs and steel beams to be able to get proper reasonable quotes from contractors). This enabled us to select the proper size beams to fit in the pocket and provide the most headroom possible in our soon to be finished basement. I sent them the dimensions and information one night and because they were going to be busy for the next week they completed the drawings and calculations that very night. Quick bid, low cost, professional and complete drawings, and quick turnaround. I would recommend them for any structural work (commercial or residential).

Kolcinski Design Build, LLC
Recent Review: The estimate was clear and thorough. The job started and was completed as close to on-time as can be expected for this kind of work. Clean-up, both daily and at the end of the project, was prompt and reasonably complete. There were only two bobbles. First, the on-site carpenter was moving too fast, and claimed to be done when several items clearly spelled out in the contract were not completed. This meant that the "final" walk through became more of an interim review. But David was quick to own up to what needed to be done(in fact, identified some additional items himself)and got the work done reasonably promptly. Second, some of the work on the main beam ended up being understrength, DESPITE having been approved by both the inspector and a structural engineer hired by David(so, not David's fault in any way I can see). Again, David acknowledged what was his responsibility to fix(and negotiated in good faith on additional work that was not). Overall, the project went well. The on-site carpenter could have been more professional, but those problems got fixed with a minimum of fuss.

Paul called me back the same day I left him a message inquiring about his service. We played phone tag for a day or so but connected eventually in person. We were in a situation where we needed the inspection done fairly quickly because a potential buyer was being led to believe by the home inspector that there were potential foundation/structural issues with the home. So, we wanted to hire a structural engineer to clear up the concern fairly quickly. Paul is a licensed PE which is what we were looking for. Thankfully, Paul leaves room in his schedule for more time sensitive situations like this so he was able to schedule the inspection within a few days which was a great relief. We walked through our entire home with him and pointed out potential items that may appear to be questionable on the surface. In addition, he inspected all other areas he felt were necessary to formulate an opinion both inside and outside the home. He was able to tell us that day that we did not have foundation or structural issues and recommended a few items to repair that would fully alleviate any visual misunderstandings. We got a detailed report of his findings the very next day complete with many pictures that completely eliminated any future questions regarding the home that could arise. We had some follow up questions and asked Paul to include a little more detail in the report related to a few items that we had been most concerned about. He revised the report very quickly and sent it back again the next day. Being able to resolve this so quickly was priceless. I was very grateful I found Paul on Angie's List and hired him due to the excellent reviews I read. They are all true and he exceeded my expectations. Paul also does home inspections and I would hire him to do that as well on a future home purchase. Look no further for a PE or home inspector.

Steve was able to come the same week, and provided a thorough report quickly on the 2 load bearing walls we wanted to remove, as well as information on the structural integrity of an older addition. Everyone I spoke with at the company was friendly and helpful. Would recommend to anyone needing this work!

CBS Complete Building Solutions was able to send out a structural engineer on the same day I requested it! Stephen Hammill (P.E.) came out, on time, carefully inspected my whole house, and gave me alot of new information about my house which was built over 100 years ago. He was able to find a small access point into the crawl space over the former back porch and figure out and tell me that the joists there went the same direction as in the rest of the basement. That information will be needed as I move towards having an outside, locked access door built, which he also recommended. That way the grade of the ground in there can be monitored and keep any water flow slanted away from the foundation. He said he would send me info on which company would be best for repairing cracks in my stucco that are bigger than 1/4". He suggested I could fill ones 1/4" or smaller myself. The main thing is I am no longer stressing that one corner of my house does not have a solid foundation. He checked for a concete pad under the foundation of the house at that corner and said it was there, but it had been put in above the freeze line. The old porch is made of wood, so the wood is expanding and contracting, depending upon the season. The stucco, which was put over the old porch to enclose and make a small room, does not move at all. When the wood moves, it makes cracks in the stucco. Moisture getting inside stucco is bad for it. Allie in their office was great and prompt, accommodated me easily on sending into to both of my e-mail addresses. Stephen was courteous about using my land line so I could hear better. Their license number and reviews and awards they have received is all right there on their website. Solid company. I was referred to them by a realtor friend who recently used them to start the process of getting some support headers installed at their place. Stephen seemed very interested in his work, gave me very careful time in all parts of the house, recommended some work in the attic too, for problem with ice dams I mentioned.

Paul came to our 1942 California Rambler. We were particularly interested in an assessment of the roof as we have a tile roof and there was some sag. Paul spent a considerable amount of time looking at the structure of our house and attached garage. He was very thorough and took a number of pictures. He answered questions along the way and then spent some time after discussing our structure. He also offered an assessment of how it was compared to some new construction and other structures he has assessed. He looked at a bid we had received for repairing our roof and offered his opinion on that, also. Paul did not limit his review to the roof but answered other questions we had, such as which walls were load bearing. Paul then prepared a report, including pictures, for our use.
