Recent Review: As the home is older, it needs various updates and occasional maintenance.  The bathroom that is original to the house has a window, but in order to increase the movement of air in the room, I wanted to install a ceiling ventilation fan/light.   In addition, many of the original pieces of trim work both inside and outside of the house needed to be replaced.  Finally, there was a minor structural issue in the unfinished basement regarding the joists attaching to a beam. Adam returned my call promptly and arranged to come and walk through the home to discuss the desired projects and work up an estimate.  Due to the nature of the projects, Adam was able to give me his initial thoughts about how to proceed, but followed up within 2 days with a written estimate. Upon acceptance of the estimate, we scheduled the the project work to occur within two weeks of the estimate.  From the start of the project, Adam and his assistant Pat arrived promptly and were very diligent about keeping the various work areas clean upon finishing for the day.  This was particularly appreciated as the bathroom has the only shower in the house and needed to be used on a daily basis.   I was very pleased with Adam's planning and flexibility given the outdoor work that needed to be completed and the many days of rain we encountered during the work days. Everyday at the end of the work day, Adam would take me through and discuss the progress made and the plan for completion.   The work performed was very impressive.  I appreciated that Adam and Pat took pride in their work and wanted to make sure all of the work performed fit seamlessly into the level of craftsmanship that had originally gone into the house.  (from matching obsolete molding to matching paint and stain colors to wood that had been stained back in 1927). I was very impressed with Adam's level of craftsmanship, promptness of work and professionalism.  I would certainly hire him again, and look forward to working with him on future projects.

Recent Review: John did beautiful work. He was responsive to both email and telephone contacts. The end result is beautiful and so closely matches the rest of our nearly one hundred year old home as to be virtually indistinguishable. His level of craftsmanship and attention to detail is exquisite, even shaping the outer edge of the interior trim to closely approximate the uneven edge of the exposed brickwork. We will be hiring him for any work we have in the future, and I have already been recommending his services to friends and family.

Recent Review: I've always used Nick as my go-to guy fro handyman style repairs.  He does solid work and he's reliable.  My happiness is important to him and he always does his punch list quickly, or is happy to make tweaks to the requested work as necessary. In this case I had him fix my house up for sale prior to putting it on the market.  Just a lot of daunting odds and ends that are on most "honey do" lists but needed to be done quickly in this case.  Nick made it happen for me, and at what I think was a fair price.

It took a little while for us to get on the schedule originally, which was fine because we weren't in a huge hurry. We had a lot of specifications for colors and styles or materials, some of which they got right the first time, and others which needed to be replaced to match what we wanted; however, they did take responsibility for those mistakes and replaced the wrong-colored window/door wraps when requested just after initial installation. Because the work was initially done in early December, they needed to come back out to finish some punch-list items in the Spring. We were finally scheduled into early May, and from there is where things started to break down. The woodwork on the columns that they had originally installed in December was built assuming we were going to paint them, which didn't make sense as we had indicated from the start that we would be staining. As a result, they needed to come back and rebuild the columns from scratch. The first redo was a joke, quite frankly. The base cap was nowhere close to square with the other column and porch, and the tightness of the mitered joints looked like something that a bad DIYer could have easily done. I had done other projects myself around the house with some success, but for a focal point on the front of our house, we wanted to hire out to make sure that it looked professional. This result was sub par for even what I could have done with my mediocre skills, let alone for people that hold themselves out to be master craftsmen. We called them on the lack of quality and they responded by sending out their manager to inspect it, who agreed with our assessment. A few weeks later, they came back out to do their third iteration of the work. The quality of this iteration was much better; however, it did not match the specifications that we had instructed them to install, leaving the base caps looking thin and disproportionate to the rest of the house and in comparison to the size of the columns themselves. This was a judgment that they made without running the change in style by us beforehand. We again commented on this and voiced our dissatisfaction. To their credit, they did ultimately hire out a master craftsman to build our columns in the fourth iteration and the result was much much better. Unfortunately it took them four instances of coming out and doing it and over a year of our time from when the first version went up. Had it been done like this the first time, I think we would have been happy with the experience overall, assuming the following punch-list items would have been also done to our satisfaction. In my initial review, I mentioned that there were other punch-list items that needed to be done in Spring of 2014 as they installed in December of 2013. When they came out to complete these, there were a number of items that they either didn't seem to complete or were done poorly. A number of the window wraps that they installed around our windows were loose and looked pretty shoddy, which their manager made note of when out looking at the columns. They ended up coming out and replacing a number of those as well; however, I saw shortly thereafter that the caulking job that they did to seal these had come undone within weeks of re-installation. We also noticed that the door trim/weather stripping that they used around our garage door had warped significantly to the point where there was a quarter-to-half inch gap where you could see into the garage from the outside in places. Obviously, not great for keeping the area weatherproofed. We complained about this and they were "repaired/replaced", though we immediately noticed the same issues. Their response at first was that it may have been related to the fact that it was initially installed flush with the concrete, which was causing expansion and warping. They trimmed it up from the concrete, but the same issue remained with warped stripping. After the third complaint, the response was something to the effect of that's just how it is with that material. This to me makes no sense as why would you use that material if it going to end up being substandard and look terrible? Ultimately at that point, my wife and I hit our breaking point and decided that we were done calling them back to have them complete pieces of their original work to our satisfaction as every time they did come out they either forgot to deal with one of the issues or did so in a less than satisfactory looking manner. To this day, we have warped garage trim and un-caulked window wrap because we ultimately gave up on trying to get this done and were sick of the constantly having to call them back for something they either didn't remember to do or didn't do well. On a positive note, our columns now look great and we do get complimented on those, and the siding and window wraps are a definite improvement over our previous look. The back service door also functions well and we have nothing bad to say about that. I just can't get over the fact though that there were still things that were not done to our satisfaction that we ultimately just gave up on because of the months and months of back and forth and frustration of constantly finding issues after they supposedly fixed what we asked them to. This was our first time hiring out for a project for my wife and I, and the way this went definitely soured the experience for us and made us weary of doing so for other projects. We recently just hired out for our second project with a local fencing company. The great experience we had with them only amplified how terrible our experience with Genesis was. What started out being a good experience in mid-2013 through their initial installation in December of 2013 turned into a sour one as we went back and forth with them throughout 2014. It's definitely an experience that I wouldn't want to go through again, and certainly turned my positive review with them into one that is clearly quite negative. We'll definitely be looking elsewhere if we have other exterior improvement projects in the future.

Mr. Arnold's crew arrived on the day expected and finished the work on time, despite it being the hottest days of the year. They left some paint chips scattered in the yard, but the transformation in the appearance of our house was well worth it.
