I was very pleased with Revolution Remodeling, which is owned by Nick Rakel. Nick is your main point of interface. All of the work was done by Nick's employee, Keith. The quality of the workmanship is quite good. I would like to especially point out the tile work and drywall work, which requires good skill, was perfect. The fee structure and service level is interesting, and I think a bit unique. Nick bills his company as being in between a full service, large company with a showroom and acting as your own general contractor (hiring and managing your own subcontractors. Nick provides some design consultation, but mainly he leaves it up to his customers to pick out materials. He does order all the materials and if any sub-contractors are needed (i.e., shower glass enclosures) he takes care of that. And while Nick gives you and estimate, the cost is based on actual cost of materials (no mark up) and a per hour labor rate. Companies that do a flat bid inflate the price to cover unforeseen problems. So, you might end up paying more, or you might pay less, and changes to the project require a formal change process. Nick did a bathroom for a friend of ours, and came highly recommended, so I felt OK on the trust factor. We changed our mind on some things, and added some work. This was not a big deal since we were simply paying by the hour. Nick's estimate on labor was pretty accurate. We exceeded his estimate on materials by about 40%, but this is because we went with pretty high end materials. His material estimates would cover the type of materials you would find in a new $300,000 home built by one of the major builders. I have remodeled bathrooms before, but I no longer have the time to do it myself. So I was not too concerned about unforeseen problems. And, my house is only 30 years old, so no big surprises lurking due to that either. Keith's drywall and tile work is better than I could ever do on my best day. We had a few mis-steps and mis-communications--these will happen on any job of this size. I was very pleased with Nick's response and we were not charged for additional labor to correct the issue. Nick was very open to me doing some of the work myself, so long as I did not cause them any delay in their work. I did all the painting and trim carpentry myself. Keith (the guy who did the work) was very pleasant. He's not very chatty, but not in an unfriendly way. When you pay by the hour, this is a good thing! My wife and I felt very comfortable having him work in our home when we weren't there. We have used a full service, big company before for our kitchen remodel. We got a bid from them for this job. They are $10,000 higher in price than Revolution. But contrasting the experience is insightful. Our kitchen contractor had a showroom where we could pick out materials there directly. They had a dedicated interior designer who drew up full schematics which we used to really visualize what it would look like. They were very good about keeping us "on task" with picking things out. Don't expect these things from Revolution. After all, you are paying less money. If you are a person who has trouble keeping up with details, making decisions, and visualizing what you want, then you might want to go with a more full service company (if you can afford it). Bottom line. I would absolutely use Revolution Remodeling again. They are a good value. They are a nice option "in between" just hiring a guy to do work and going with a full service, large remodeling company.
