Jeff was very responsive, and the bathrooms ended up looking great. We had our master bathroom redone first and then hired Jeff to do another full bathroom a year later since the first project had gone so smoothly. Thanks Jeff!

So Many Problems!! (though they tried hard to resolve them) Do NOT make the mistake we did and let them talk you out of pulling a permit. The work by this contractor should definitely be inspected. MA Design quoted a low price, used cheap (Home Depot grade) materials, and relied on workers with limited English skills. Plumbing and carpentry were problematic, seemingly due to inadequate training for some workers, spotty communication and quality control from supervisors, and some sloppy attention to detail. We should add that our foreman, John L, and the workmen were willing enough to fix problems after we discovered them, though we had to pay for time and materials when we found MA Design’s quality standards to be unacceptable. The end result of the bathroom remodeling seems OK and we hope that no more nasty surprises turn up in the future. The two supervisors are generally courteous and anxious to please, but poor communication with their workers and sometimes with us seemed to be typical for this contractor. Here are specific examples of our problems: PLUMBING 1. The plumber (apparently not licensed) installed the wrong shower controller in the wall, tiled over the wall, then tried to hide this mistake by sticking on the control handle taken from the shower controller we had specified. Of course, the controller did not work properly and we discovered what had happened by poking through the unused shower parts and calling the manufacturer. To correct this error, MA Design had to cut a hole in the plaster wall of our hallway. MA Design did repair the plaster but now we have an additional painting job because of their mistake. 2. We also discovered that their “plumber” tried to attach the tub spigot to flexible PEX tubing rather than to a solid copper pipe anchored to a stud in the wall. The spigot worked loose in just a few days. No qualified plumber would have made such a rookie mistake. Repairing this error also required the hole in our hallway wall. Clearly, no qualified supervisor inspected the plumbing before the tile went up in the shower enclosure. 3. Just 2 months after MA Design wrapped up the work, we found a serious water leak coming from the ceiling below the remodeled bathroom. This ruined the ceiling and of course ruined the paint job we had just completed in the room below the leak. To their credit, the supervisor quickly came out, cut a hole in the ceiling, and replaced a flawed PEX tubing fitting with a quick-apply fitting to stop the leak. MA Design then cut away large sections of water-damaged ceiling in two rooms, let things dry out for a few weeks, and applied mold-kill spray to address the mold that had formed. It seems that a fitting on the PEX tubing was not properly crimped. This reinforced our belief that the MA Design workers doing plumbing on our job were not well qualified and that MA Design did not choose to or did not know how to inspect work adequately. Several weeks later, MA Design eventually had the joint repaired by a licensed plumber and repaired the holes in the ceiling. 4. The shower enclosure tiling was done OK for the most part but we found holes in the grout around some tiles. We suspect that the grout job was substandard for another reason: the grout sealing the tub to the floor is cracking and flaking after only 2 months. CARPENTRY 5. We replaced the bathroom window with a safety glass window but MA Design replaced the prior window trim and window sill with lesser quality trim and no window sill whatsoever. This was a complete mismatch with the rest of the house. MA Design quoted use of “standard” trim. If MA Design’s estimate assumed replacing trim with something so obviously out of place with the rest of the house, this should have been clearly stated in the quote. We ended up paying to rip out their trim and replace with trim that matched the rest of the house. In fact, the lumberyard’s “standard” trim exactly matched the trim elsewhere in the house so we felt that MA Contracting’s use of “standard” to describe their materials was deceptive. 6. They also installed a new window in an adjacent room. They made the exterior windowsill out of a very knotty piece of pine, inviting future rot. Even worse, no drip edge was cut into the underside of the sill, which could lead to water wicking under the sill and getting into the exterior siding. No well qualified carpenter would have made a mistake like that. PAINTING 7. MA Design did very little painting for us, just some primer application after drywall installation. Still, the workman on our job made a rookie mistake. He applied primer to a repaired ceiling with a rough wall roller and then applied primer to the doorway trim with that same roller rather than with a brush or smooth roller. The result: the formerly smooth doorway trim now had a rough, thick layer of paint that looked and felt awful. It took us 2 hours of sanding to restore the doorway trim to a smooth surface. This experience reinforced our general impression that many, if not most, MA Design workmen are not properly skilled or trained for the work they are doing. COORDINATION & COMMUNICATION 8. We agreed at the outset which fixtures were to be bought by MA Design and which by us, but MA Design sometimes bought the wrong items, which resulted in confusion and delays. In many cases, we ended up buying the needed fixtures ourselves just to keep the project moving. 9. On at least 10 days, workers were expected but none showed up and MA Design did not call to inform us of this in advance.

Tri was great, I had a terrible, old bathroom with a layout that made no sense. Tri had lots of good ideas and he helped me source different materials. He listened to my needs and he even figured out how to install my super specific bidet toilet. I absolutely LOVE my new bathroom, and every morning I'm so glad that I did this renovation. There were hiccups, of course, but what construction project doesn't have that? I am surprised to see the previous review from fall of 2019- that is when Tri was doing my project as well. I wanted to wait a 6-12 months before reviewing to see how the work has held up. So far, so good. But I didn't have ANY of the issues from the previous reviewer. Tri was very professional, all of his contractors were as well, and I never had issues with any of them in my home (I do have security cameras throughout). He did explain any material costs or any changes to me, and I was able to provide my own materials at any time. The only one that I will agree with is that the subcontractor may not have been as skilled- my tile floor was not laid properly at first. When I pointed it out, Tri pulled it all up and redid the work, and I'm glad that he insisted on starting over and doing it properly. Overall, I was very pleased with the work and I would hire Tri again.

Jeff And his crew are amazing. Jeff is a very personal and professional guy. Easy to work with and always available to talk. His crew is top of the line. These guys know what they’re doing. They’re transformed my 1930’s horrific bathroom into a beautiful Spa Resort bathroom. I’m so impressed with their work that I’m hiring Jeff to do my kitchen. He’s fair, transparent, and professional. Highly recommend!

Terrific. I did 90% of the demolition and Jeffrey (thankfully!) did the rest. The bathroom came out wonderful! I love my new bathroom so much, I have asked him to do my half bathroom next.

The project went very well. They took great attention to detail to make sure everything from top to bottom was done the way I wanted it done. I have no complaints about their work. Their pricing is on the high side but you do get quality work. I would hire them again and have recommended them to a number of friends.

AJ & L Contractors
Leo and his team were hired to save my bathroom renovation after a nightmare experience with another local contractor who we had to part ways with mid-project. This meant picking up the pieces and re-doing work where someone else left off... Leo was up for the challenge! Overall my husband and I had a very positive experience and are thrilled with the final product. What struck us most about Leo was his determination to get the job right. He came back several times to work out specific design details and millwork profiles until we were 100% satisfied. The only hiccups we had were involving the coordination of other trades like the glass/mirror company. We were under the impression that he was coordinating for us and vice versa. A simple communication error, but it did cause a slight delay in our project. Leo may not have the most experience, but we do think he offers a great price-point, quality work, and is an honest individual. That certainly can't be said for most contractors these days. We would definitely hire him again!

AReal Painting & Home Improvement
We recommend Carlos Real and his company, “Real Painting and Home Improvement”, without reservation for painting and home renovation projects. They do superior work for a reasonable price. Carlos is wonderful to work with. He develops a very realistic schedule and sticks to it. He is communicative, takes time to understand the needs of the homeowner, ensures that his crew is punctual and oversees the quality of their labors. The crew are polite, neat and very competent at their respective jobs. Last year we had “Real Painting” paint the exterior of our house. They were efficient, prompt and did an excellent job on our house and deck. We were so impressed that we hired them this year to renovate our guest bathroom. This consisted of tiling the tub area, putting on the fixtures, installing a vanity and toilet, and tiling the floor. We couldn’t be happier with the result! Thank you Real Painting and Home Improvement!

Recent Review: I called Baker Elman after my original plumber wouldn't make time to finish a bathroom renovation.  They were professional and responsive, scheduling work shortly after my call.  Work was done well and efficiently.  I had trouble scheduling the plumbing inspection, and Baker Elman was helpful and patient with that process.  My only gripe is that they are more expensive than other plumbers I contacted, but I was happy to pay a premium for their availability.

Recent Review: I hired Marco Polo Construction to update and renovate my condo in the Back Bay. This included a full kitchen remodel, bathroom update, refinishing floors, and painting the entire condo. I have nothing but positive things to say about the contractors - they were friendly, professional, kept the place clean, and very responsive to my requests. The workmanship was exceptional. The only downside was that the project took far longer than originally quoted.

Recent Review: Great - the workers constructed the face frame from materials provided. Given the house is old and nothing is square, working out the spacing and leveling of the cabinet doors was challenging, but they came up with a solution that looks great.

Recent Review: I met with Albert (and 2 other contractors at separate times) to give details on a bathroom renovation.  Albert's bid for the job was competitive and perhaps more importantly, I felt like Albert was interested in pleasing me as his customer.  He struck a good balance of making appropriate suggestions while still respecting my overall vision for the project.  I appreciated his responsiveness to emails and texts with my questions about various topics regarding scheduling or materials during the renovation.  Albert was understanding and flexible when I made slight changes as work was being completed.  Throughout the process, I felt like members of Albert's team were respectful of my home and careful to not damage walls/floors as they completed their work.  Effort was always made to leave the workspace "clean" at the end of the work day.  The work itself was completed at a level very satisfactory to me.  Albert's subcontractor completed extensive tile work in the bathroom.  One thing to note was that they took significant effort to make sure that the shower area was completely waterproofed.  It seemed to go above and beyond what I expected and what is typical of other contractors.  Overall, I was very pleased with the final product.  I would not hesitate to work with Albert on any future projects.

Recent Review: We recently completed an extensive home renovation project in our home in Auburndale, MA. Our house is a Victorian era home built between the eighteen sixties to eighties. We initially hired an architect to design and create plans for all of the projects, followed by interviewing four contractors to perform the work. In part, based on a very positive review from friends who had recently completed a major condo renovation with Bertola Custom Homes and Remodeling, as well as our impressions of the contractors based on the bids and interviews, we chose Joe Bertola and his company for the project. His bid was on the higher end but we were impressed with his creative suggestions and comprehensive discussion of the details of the project and the emphasis on the selection of high quality materials and products for the work that would complement and enhance the unique features of our Victorian home. We then worked closely with Joe Bertola and his design assistant, Leila Petersen Almeida, to finalize the plans for the construction and design of the bathrooms and cabinets and to do a detailed a rigorous selection of the materials and products for the renovation. The project took many months because it required extensive demolition followed by the combination of electrical, plumbing, cabinetry work and a multitude of Newton inspections. Joe assigned a project manager, Rafael Zanetti, to oversee the work and he was terrific. He was immediately responsive when we had questions and kept us well informed of the progress of the work. The actual workers, including the carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, etc. were highly skilled and meticulous in the completion and quality of the work. Along the way we made some additions and minor changes in the work and design and Joe and the project manager were responsive and creative in providing solutions. We are completely satisfied with the “finished products” of the construction and proudly display the work to our friends. For homeowners who are in search of a builder who is creative and highly professional and takes pride in the quality of his work, we offer our highest recommendations of Joe Bertola and his company.

Recent Review: Marc and Raquel were wonderful and helped guide us through an extensive remodeling that included a second-floor master bedroom addition, an open concept first floor with a beautiful kitchen, a finished basement for the kids, new roof and siding, and several new bathrooms. They redid all our electrical and plumbing, and even added ductwork for HVAC. The team, including our dedicated project manager John, was proactive in identifying issues and were clearly experienced in providing solutions at every turn. We couldn’t be happier with the results and are looking forward to working with them again on our yard project!
