  • They found the code right away but they charged me more than $100 to do it. They never told me and I didn't find out until later that such a code search can and will be done for free at most auto parts stores and several other locations, too. It was, they said, the catalytic converter. Their estimate to replace? More than $1000, over $700 for the part and over $300 for labor. They didn't tell me, as I found out later from a more reputable auto repair garage, that the catalytic converter rarely goes out and mine did not need replacing. This place gave me an estimate of less than half of Alexander's. I had used Alexander's several times before and they seemed reasonable, but this episode drew me to conclude that I will never use them again and steer people clear of them any chance I get. On finding the code, it's fine they charge, but as a regular customer, they could've and should've told me where I could get it done for free. That's how you build loyalty. But the estimate for a replacement that didn't need to be done anyway, they were outrageous. I also got an oil change, so the total cost at Alexander's was over $150!

  • I think they are very good. They give you an option of staying there while they do the work, or they will take you home in a shuttle. They will pick you up when the car is done. I bought my car from another dealership on the other end of town.

  • I have gone here for at least 10 years. They tend to be really quick. They are very conscientious, and check everything. They do not just do the service, and explain everything great before doing the work. The pricing is very competitive, but depends on what you need to have done. They are very professional as well.

  • The waiting room is very nice - and the shop is very clean - but you pay significantly for that.  There was a small leak in my wife's radiator (had to be topped off once every other month) and they talked her into having it fixed - for 600 dollars.  Right after the fix, my wife's car was leaking way more fluid than ever before.  I discovered that the power steering reservoir was snapped in half and leaking everywhere.  I had my wife take the car back in.  Their analysis was that the water pump and the transmission were leaking and recommended replacing the water pump right away.  They did not even notice the power steering reservoir.  I went in and showed them - and they said they could replace the broken bracket - but they said it must have rusted through.  (I still believe they broke it when putting in the new radiator - the timing was too perfect).  Anyway, I refused and ordered and replaced the bracket myself.  We have not had any more leaks.  (I'm not saying that the water pump doesn't drip on occasion or the transmission either for that matter - but I have not had to add anything to them in the last two months.)  My cars are old - I don't need to throw away money on them.
    On my daughter's car, we took it in for a bad distributor and a separated muffler pipe.  The distributor was estimated at $550 installed, and the muffler at another 300.  Plus, they listed a host of other issues and said that it would take ~2500 to get the car running right.  (To their credit, they didn't necessarily recommend having everything fixed - they thought the fixes were worth more than the car.)  I refused service - then ordered the distributor off line ($75) and installed it in about an hour.  I didn't want to mess with the muffler - so I took it to Economy Muffler in St. Paul and they had it replaced in about 20 minutes for $180 total.  (You definitely aren't paying for a nice waiting room there.)
    All told I won't go back.  Finding a good auto mechanic that you can trust is hard - but I think you might have better luck elsewhere.  They are very convenient (to my house) and have a nice waiting area - but I think those overhead items are not something I'm willing to pay for.  I wish I had the $600 back from the radiator replacement.

  • I was extremely satisfied with St. Paul Automotive. Their customer service is exceptional and they finished up quickly and at a very reasonable price. I plan on having my car serviced there from now on.

  • It was fine. I was really good. They were very professional. I think their address though was really misleading. I had to make an appointment but they took my car in as soon as I go there, I got there a little early. They pretty much stayed on track for the estimated time it would take to complete it.

  • It was pretty good. They are a small kind of family run garage and luckily they are really close to our house. They've always done good work for us. They can't do everything, but what they do they do very honestly. For instance if they can fix something by smacking a connection they will do that as opposed to buying an expensive part and charging you for it.

  • They are really good. We got this really nice man, who gave us a price, and he was really nice, real friendly, and he was pleasant. It felt like you knew him as a friend. They have a wonderful waiting room with doughnuts, and a huge flat screen. It is like going to a resort. We bought our Prius there and the price was lower than other places. We have never had a problem with the car.  They are real punctual, and very professional.
