Pediatric Care reviews in Saint Louis

    Stepping Stones Pediatrics
When it comes to Pediatricians in St. Louis, you can really find one on nearly every corner it seems. When we started looking for a pediatrician my requirements were 1- someone my son would like 2- took our insurance and 3- was not in a hospital, but had practicing rights at a hospital. I wanted a stand alone building that I didn't have to arrive a half hour early to troll for parking. I called Dr. Madan's office and left a message. Within 15 minutes, he called me back personally and set an appointment for me to come in and meet him before the baby was due. We met that afternoon and I was beyond impressed. His office is conveniently located between MoBap and Mercy and easy to get to. We talked for over an hour. He gave me pointers and things to help me get ready for the birth of my son and tips on how to save some $ once at the hospital. We quickly decided he was our guy and we let him know when we were being induced. Even before our son was born, he was checking on us. Since the labor was longer than expected, he was very attentive and engaged. Once he arrived, Dr. Madan met us at the hospital for check ups and all that fun stuff. He took care of him so well and my Mom just loves him for how he interacted with all of us- including our family members in the room when he came to see the baby. Dr. Madan told me once during an office visit that in order to pass his final exam to become a pediatrician, if the baby cried, you would automatically fail. He has a calming touch and disposition and my son just smiles the whole time he's in the office. Except during shots, but who wouldn't cry for those. Otherwise, he is gentle and thorough and incredibly knowledgeable. I have never had a doctor so attentive and easy to reach, which as new parents, is such a bonus. Oh, and he's the circumcision king. If anyone's going to do it, you want him to. We were very lucky to find him!

This was not a great experience.  I wanted a doctor who would guide me through being a new parent.  They did not even explain how often I needed to bring my son in for check-ups. This is a great place to take your kid if you don't want to vaccinate.  I wanted a delayed schedule and they didn't even entertain that idea as they were "poisonous".  This fit was just not for me, AND now looking back with more experienced eyes, I feel they put my child at risk in the name of natural medicine.  There is a way to balance traditional medicine with more natural medicine (ie preventative care discussing diet and possible supplements if needed) - they did not fit that standard for me.

I was very pleased with both the practice, the timeliness that we got an appointment, and Dr. Ankney's demeanor and approach. This practice is affiliated with the Wash U medical school, so be prepared for residents/students to be shadowing and/or providing some services. Overall I am very pleased with our choice of pediatrician for our daughter, and will be bringing our new baby boy there this fall when he is born!

Doctor was 25 minutes late getting into room ( actually a shirt wait time for them). No greeting to me or my children, doctor just started rattling of questions not listening to the answers. The nurse is the RUDEST person in the world ( they all are). She ( and most of the staff) mumble under their breath and you can't hear them. Nurse takes kids to get height weight. One child couldn't read any of the lines and the doctor made NO comment during any part of our appointment. When I called to get an answer about the vision test, I was told to go see a specialist!
As doctor performed the check ups, I watched how he examined my children. He barely listened as the scope rested on their chest, doctor was talking the whole time. He was asking me personal questions and not focusing on the exam. I had concerns with each child and when I asked the doctor, I was told not to worry. I asked for an explanation and he completely blew me off. I left the office feeling as if I needed to go find another doctor immediately since I didn't feel as if any of my children got an adequate exam.
This is not my first issue with the practice. This is our second doctor. We switched from the first after she missed ( and two miss-diagnosed) three significant diagnoses! The office is over run with bureaucratic hospital policies ( they just sold out to Wash U). They never have the time or compassion to explain things to the parents or to the patients. It is alway a rush. Unless your child is in for a vaccine or a cold, your are sent to a specialist. It appears as if there is absolutely no thinking ( caring ) outside the box. You are charged for every last thing, a note, a copy, the nurses time and etc ( it is not that my policy doesn't cover it , the practice charges for everything to get the most of your plan). None of that would be nearly as painful if you felt that your child is in good hands.
I have giving the office 8 years of my time and I am moving on. I am so tired of being treated like an idiot mother who doesn't have a clue. I am tired of being abused by the surly and RUDE office staff who have no problem huffing under their breath at you. I am tired of misdiagnosis's. I am tired of feeling as no one knows my children or me and that we are nearly a patient number.

Dr O'Neil is great with my son. Him and his staff show genuine caring. When my son is sick, we always get in the same day. It's usually with another doctor or the nurse practioner, but I feel confident going to see any of the professionals in the practice.

Dr. Keaney and the hospital stuff are all very friendly, caring, and always try to ease anxieties of the kids. When our daughter developed flu-like symptoms, they conducted a thorough exam to find out what it really was, which was very different from our previous doctors who provided only cursory attentions to the similar symptom.

We have been VERY impressed with every aspect of our interaction with Dr. Plax and his office.
    INTERVIEW:
We met with Dr. Plax prior to choosing him as our son's pediatrician. He is very gentle mannered and takes the time to understand your concerns and answer your questions. We were very comfortable with him from our first meeting.
    WELL CHILD VISITS:
We've taken our son in a handful of times for standard newborn checkups. The nurse who has seen us has been very upbeat and friendly. Also, she is super-fast at giving shots! Dr. Plax's exams have been gentle and thorough. He sits with us and answers all of our questions. I feel like he really cares about our son and his well-being.
    TEST RESULTS:
Our son needed some additional testing, including one time over the weekend. Dr. Plax or another doctor in the practice called us with the results in a very timely manner and really set us at ease. I have been very impressed with the communication from his office.
    ASKING QUESTIONS:
Dr. Plax has home phone hours which we have taken advantage of. We have also called to speak with a nurse about minor health concerns / questions. Their response time is excellent and as new parents, we appreciate this resource for all of our questions.

This was our first official appointment with Dr Hartman, and it went very well! This was our second visit to the office and second meeting of her and her nurse, Kay, as we had a consultation first. Dr Hartman and staff are friendly, knowledgeable, prompt, and courteous. My only frustration with the office is some of their administrative policies, namely that I could not so much as schedule an appointment until they had my children's medical records on file. Having moved to new cities twice in the past two years, it has never been so difficult to get a doctor appointment scheduled. I was also frustrated that even though they required copies of these records, they refused to make the copies they needed in their office. I had to go make the copies and bring them in. Maybe I'm the only one frustrated or confused by these policies, but it made for a difficult transition for us in a new city. It did cause me to look into other providers, but in the end I chose Dr. Hartman and colleagues, and I am glad I did! We look forward to future appointments.

Took my tots here twice. I understand the docs here are well-regarded
but both times we had 30 minute plus waits. One time it was 90 mins and
getting a flu shot took most of our morning. They also charge a hefty
fee for items like school forms or copies of records (even if you
provided them with the records initially). I'd look for a place that isn't so bureaucratic and institutional.

Dr. O'neil from Southwest Pediatrics is wonderful. He's very personable, takes all the time you need to answer your questions, very realistic and down to earth. He's wonderful with our son, very sweet and great at helping me not be worried about the small things. He gives great referrals. Everybody is very friendly.
