Home Builder reviews in Providence

    SITE SPECIFIC LLC
Much like the other F rating on this site, our experience with Site Specific and particularly one of its principal owners, Peter, was nothing short of a debacle. We had a similar experience with their poor communication, billing surprises, major construction mistakes and total mismanagement of our project. The company fired our project manager about a third of the way through and never replaced him, choosing instead to try to spread responsibility out among the team for the remaining 8 months of the project. It wasn't surprising that that approach was a recipe for disaster. As with the other review, some of the employees and subs were nice and talented but that doesn't make up for the fact that the company is run poorly and treats its clients in a patronizing manner. And I would agree that their quoting and billing practices border on fraud. One of their employees actually said to us in a meeting that "We purposely bid lower to make it more attractive so we don't lose the work." No kidding, but did you really just say that? Whenever we questioned invoices, they became defensive and often blamed subs or us. They did this repeatedly, telling us something would cost a certain amount and then when the invoice came, it would be higher. This all added up. Not to mention the incredible amount of time we spent trying to unwind their invoices and manage aspects of our project that they should be managing but weren't. In addition they completely botched our HVAC install and ruined our kitchen floor, to the extent that we ended the relationship leaving work undone because we couldn't bear the thought of continuing to work with them; and they let us out of our contract with money still owed them because they knew it would cost them more to come back and fix all that they had messed up. Again, as with the other poor review, I recommend you avoid this company at all costs. You can do better and spare yourself the stress and expense of dealing with such a bad operation.

Working with Rob on a complete renovation has been excellent. We are in the early stages but he is incredibly responsive, knowledgeable, and helpful. Looking forward to proceeding with the project, and will update this review as we move along.

J H Home Improvements And Plastering
Jason started off strong and I was hopeful that all would go well because he talks a good talk about experience, punctuality, and doing a good, detail oriented job. I came to learn his work is mediocre to bad (other than plaster) and he is not trustworthy. Jason is good at plastering and painting. Anything beyond that is a battle and not good. Framing, hanging doors, trim, stairs etc - not good. The stair case he put in was not only bad but obviously unsafe. He did not know how to do stairs and ended up changing the design so the last stair had about 6 inches of stair on one side of it. Nightmare for a landlord or anyone concerned with safety. He gave me a hard time when I complained that they were unsafe and tried to tell me "people will get used to the last step being short". After I put a stop payment on his check he finally agreed to take them down and do them over again. Jason was constantly pushing off the job for other work yet eager to get paid quickly. In the end of the day I made the mistake of paying him the final payment before the job was done. There were only small things that needed to be complete but about a days work. He showed up to pick up the check and never did the work! So now I am stuck with needing to hire someone else and pay fore work he should have done. He is unprofessional and not to be trusted.

    Mark S. Menard Builder/Remodeler
Mark and his team stepped in and fixed another "contractor's" shoddy work. He framed, leveled and installed a custom composite deck that looks fantastic. I cannot more highly recommend Mark and his services. He is talented, responsive and punctual.

Someone did answer the phone right away, but was very rude, barely allowing me to complete my request for information before quickly stating that they were not interested and then she hung up on me.

    OMEGA BUILDERS
They were clean, efficient and time efficient. They get the job done and were very reasonable. The work that they did was excellent. Every time i went home i expected a mess but everything was clean. They did the whole addition which was 800 sq ft in about 4 weeks.

    Cormier Construction
I had saved Steve's business card for several years from when he was recommended by a granite company to remove an old counter top. He made a good impression on me and I had showed him my porch at the time, so when I decided to remodel the porch I called him. He does excellent work. He models his company after Holmes on Holmes, "do it right". He gave me an estimate which matched what I expected and ordered Harvey windows for the porch. It took a few weeks for them to come in but once they did, Steve came to do my job very quickly. He works quietly, cleans up, and does the best he can for the customer. The original porch is off the back of the two-family house on the second floor. It had been quite flimsy with large aluminum windows w/screens but between the windows were only 1 x 3 boards. We eliminated two windows on the ends of the porch and kept the four windows across the back. That gave me more wall space and there is also a bit more wall between each window. That is where he added insulation, which will make the porch much more useable in the winter. With a small space heater, it might be used for a lot of the winter. Everything is tight and sealed. The room will no longer be for storage and cats. It makes a great breakfast room with a view of the back yard trees. Steve also advised me that the first floor porch under mine is much more sturdy and if I replaced all the windows, the cost would be only $1,000 or less. I will definitely make that a project for the 2013 taxes.

    A-1 Roofing & Construction
A1 was one of the local construction companies I contacted to get an estimate on rebuilding my front porch.   On the morning I called them, I spoke with the owner of the company and he was at my house within an hour to look at the project and take measurements.  While still at my home he contacted his painting team and a member of that team also came over to look at the project.  The three of us discussed what I was looking to have done and the options I had as far as construction materials that were to be used in preparing the estimate.   My main objective with the project was to retain the decorative materials that already existed (since the house is rather old) and rebuild the structure of the porch and stairs.  They understood what I expected the end state to be, and prepared the written estimate accordingly (which I received later on that same day).   I had received other estimates before A1’s and also contacted other companies (and received estimates) after.  Once I was done receiving the estimates, I crunched all the numbers (which were all pretty much around the same) however A1 came in the lowest (500 dollars below the next lowest estimate).  The reason why I chose A1 was not solely because they came in at the lowest price (even though it did help to confirm my decision), it was because of my initial interaction with them during the estimate process.  They were the quickest to respond to my original solicitation and understood my need to retain the original decorative woodwork on my historic home.    The work was scheduled to begin on a specific date - and at 7:00 am, my barking dogs awoke me to the A1 team prepping to start the day.  I went outside and met the team and they explained what was to be done for the day.  The team was professional and responsible (even cleaning up each day before leaving for the night).   The work progressed each day (even on days when the weather was not it’s best for outdoor construction).  Once the construction was done, I was asked to go over –everything- which I did and asked for a couple of ‘tweaks’ on things (which got immediately done).    The painting part of the project started once the construction completed.  Unfortunately, the painting started in the middle of May when it pretty much rained every other day for a couple of weeks.  On dry days, the painting team was there sanding, caulking, and painting.  Eventually, the sun came back out and the painting completed.   On the final day, the painting team leader and the company owner met me at my home for a final review of the project.   Everything looked spectacular and the experience was very gratifying.

    DESLANDES CONSTRUCTION INC
Overall, the project has gone extremely smoothly. The quality of their work is superb. Deslandes' crew has been organized, professional, friendly, and tidy.  When the job moved inside and began to disrupt our living space, they worked hard to minimize the disruption and kept our access to the kitchen open throughout.  The vendors for materials they recommended were good and helpful.  Jim worked closely with our architect throughout the process. The clout the company carries in the community served us well in terms of service, I believe.

There were a few costs that we had not anticipated, however, they were not the fault of the builder.  Rather, there were things not specified at the time of the bid that we assumed would cost less than they did.  Deslandes worked with us to find acceptable solutions -- both aesthetically and from a budget standpoitn.  As first time renovators, we learned things along the way.  I always felt that Deslandes was on "our" side.

When there were any issues -- and as with any big building projec,t there are bound to be some -- Jim and his crew  were extremely quick to address them.

    I would highly recommend them.
