Providence Wood Flooring Experts Reviews
Price: When When the work was completed, $1,500 was the total cost - and they even did more than we had expected.
Extra unanticipated services: They refinished the landing area alongside the curved stair case. They also refinished the edging under the banister between the posts. Neither of these things were requested, but were included in the total cost. Additionally, there were ~ 12 pieces of flooring that needed to be replaced due to past water damage at the house. The replacement boards were included. No unexpected last minute charges.
Floor maintenance: They provided tips for short and long-term maintenance for the floors to keep it in good shape.
Bonus service: Once the job had started, the crew pulled the refrigerator and found a serious problem. The ice maker on the freezer had shorted out and the insulation at the waterline input had completely worn out and was corroded. This had resulted in rusty water leaking onto the hardwood floor underneath the refrigerator for some time. Having just moved into the house, we had no idea there was a problem. The crew immediately called us to let us know we needed to see the problem. They were able to assess the situation and indicated that the floor was not damaged to the point that boards would need to be replaced, but stressed that it was very important that we address the issue within a few months to prevent damage to their refinishing job and the floor itself.
Overall: Great value, class act service provider. When we need the floors refinished many years down the road, I would be confident to work with this business again, and I would highly recommend them to anyone.
I do have criticisms however.
The first thing that I didn't like was that I was asked to pay before I could inspect the finished work. The floors were completely wet with urethane that had been put down only minutes before, and I couldn't walk on them to see whether there were any problems with the finished project (I could scarcely look at them either because of the smell).
True to his word, after it dried, there was a place where the wood had chipped off leaving no urethane and some spots where the finish looked thin. I asked for a third coat and they came back that very day and put one on without complaint. The floor actually chipped again, but I didn't ask them to come back because I suspect it was the floor's deteriorated condition in that one area, and not the fault of the refinishers.
I let the floor air out with the windows open for about two weeks, and waited another couple of weeks with the windows closed, before I slept in there. After I started sleeping in there, I started having a lot of difficulty breathing at night and it took me awhile before I began to wonder if it was something about the room itself. Honestly, I have asthma and stuff like that happens, it is often hard to pinpoint where the problem is coming from. I wondered if there was mold somewhere in the walls before it occurred to me that maybe the floor was causing the problem.
I had to call
I opened the windows back up and set some fans back up to blow out any leftover gasses for another week. About a month later, I moved back into the room and haven't had any sleeping/breathing issues since. I can't say the the issues I had were definitely from the floor, but I am kicking myself that I didn't think to have the conversation about the toxicity of various floor finishes BEFORE I made the choice to go with the moisture-cure urethane.
So my criticism of
The main reason I wouldn't use
Overall, I was impressed with how much they got done and how quickly. The picture below shows how dark my original floor finish was and how much the look will improve once it is refinished. I don't have a picture of the refinished floor to show.
