Shoe Repair Shop reviews in Portland

  • I originally had leather sole protectors put on my Frye boots for around $30.00 and they needed to be replaced. I took the boots to New Shoes in downtown Tigard as I like to support local businesses. I was stunned as I watched the owner pick up the right boot and with his hands literally rip the sole back from the front toe. Without looking at the other boot, he told me I needed to have both boots resoled for a cost of $125.00. I had no idea the sole of this one boot was defective or needed repair. I came in expecting a charge of around $30.00 and expressed my dismay he ripped the toe off the sole. The owner was very rude and asked me twice "do you want these resoled or not." I initially said "yes" but then listened to my inner voice that was screeching red flags. I then told him "no, I will need to get a second opinion as you have a bad attitude." The owner turned and walked back to his work space and said "YOU have a bad attitude." I have never experienced such rude behavior from a business owner.

  • Ok so I'm a cowboy boot wearer.  I have worn cowboy boots all of my life.  My very favorite pair of boots I purchased 18 years ago.  They are custom made Shark Skin Nocona books.  Recently I had to have them re-soled for about the fourth or fifth time.
I went into Oak Grove Shoe repair as he had done fine work on other boots I have.  The nice man kept going on and on how inexpensive he was compared to other shops.  He told me I could either do a half for $45 or a Whole heal and sole for $90.  I opted for the Whole meal deal.
When I went back a few days later to retrieve the boots I couldn't get my foot in them. W**!?!?!  I have owned these boots for 18 years and I have logged miles and miles in these beauties and now they don't fit.  When I brought it up to the owner he said "I no touch the sides just the bottom! But I will stretch free of charge for you."  I explained to him that these are custom made shark skin boots and I don't believe shark skin stretches.  He assured me that he would take care of it.  I came back a couple of days later and tried them again.  The boots were tight but tolerable.  I have just put them on today and what to my surprise he F*%#ing split the skin!  AHHHH!
I Wrote the manufacturer and they told me shark skin does NOT stretch!  I received an email back from them within a couple of hours.
Here is their response to me when I wrote them and asked:
"Shark Skin, once tanned, has a very high resistance to abrasion. Shark also has one of the longest fiber structures of any leather which gives the leather a strong tensile strength. The grain is very well defined, but will be smoother depending upon the size, species, and area of the skin that is cut. The leather will tend to be boardy, however, since it is vegetable tanned this leather is very dry. Shark will not stretch. The finish is usually a hard finish that will not withstand the abrasion or flex that the leather itself will. Since shark is boardy, thick, it does not stretch, and is subject to cracking, fit the boots correctly to snug. The finish makes this boot a dress boot, not a utility boot."
To replace the boots will be $379.95 plus shipping
I'm going to ask him to buy me new boots.  I'll keep you updated on the status.
    NOT HAPPY!

  • Both my wife and I have had shoes repaired and maintained at Derek's for many years. They've always exceeded my expectations. Courteous, pro, and a great value.
The two things we get done most often are heel replacement/recapping/wrapping and adding protective soles. Anything I bring in comes back spotless and shined.
I'm wearing shoes that would have been trash 5 years ago otherwise, simply by getting worn heels replaced every year or so. (I do a ton of walking.) This costs $20 a pop. If you pay in advance, they knock 10% off the top, so I actually pay $18.
Protective soles are just very thin – but tough – rubbery skins that are added over the part of leather soles that contact the ground. They allow you to get away with leather soles in Portland year-round. I have Derek's add these by default with any new pair of shoes.
Turnaround can vary a bit if they're especially busy. I've never had to wait more than a week and work has always been complete when promised. You can call or look up your claim check number on their website to confirm your items are ready before you stop in.
I've never used their pickup/drop off service or curbside pickup as I work nearby. But they offer both of these things for free and I can see how it could be super helpful with parking being a hassle in the neighborhood.

  • GEORGE'S SHOE REPAIR did a fabulous job. He is the best with anything with leather. He's a craftsman. He has been in this business for years and years. He does things the old style way and it's just beautiful. The leather always looks brand new when he's done and fully conditioned and soft. He provides a quality service that is not found anywhere else. Timeliness can be an issue, though. He's flooded with business and will not be through with something until the quality is perfect. Once you use him, you'll pray that he's going to live forever and never stops doing this.

  • My shoes were not ready on the day I was told they would be ready. I was told it was because they had major computer system problems. I was given a new date that my shoes would be ready. They were not ready on that date either. I had to go back two more times before I could pick up my shoes.

  • I have used Dorians in the past and sought them out again when I needed my boots fixed. The heels were wearing unevenly and. Had almost worn through the front portion of the sole. They presented me options for replacing the leather soles or for putting on a stronger synthetic sole. They gave me options for fixing some stitching on the upper portion of the boot too. They gave me an estimate, which for the quality of the work seemed reasonable. They were done as promised, when promised. It's obvious that thy do a lot of business from my brief visits, and everyone who came in seemed to be treated just as well, just as reasonably.

  • The job was well done but the service was just ok. The gentleman helping me was great at repairing but lacking in social skills. He tolm me the job would take 1 hour. i came back 1 1/2 hours later and he hadn't moved the shoes from where I left them. At one point he closed the gates. This at Lloyd Center Mall. Sometime during the afternoon, he put a poorly written note on a piece of cardboard that said he would be back soon. He pulled the gate down and left the shop. I waited 30 minutes and still no one came back so I drove home. I had to return to the mall the next day just to pick up the shoes. I think he should advise his customers about the time he is going to be away from the shop so we can pick up our shoes before he puts the gate down. Better yet, stay open since the shop is advertised as open the same hours as the mall.

  • WORST SERVICE EVER. I brought in 2 purses. Came in to get them 2 weeks AFTER
they were supposed to be done and they hadn't even started on them. They acted like it was no big deal. 2 weeks later called to make sure they were done, and not only did they not do what they promised to do, but they were so extremely rude about it that I was completely baffled. Extremely terrible business practices!!

  • I call it the Old Shoe Resurrection. They have a high quality work for a reasonable price. They were able to restore five or six pairs of my old favorite shoes. They are amazing and I will definitely use them again in the future.

  • The man at the desk explained exactly how the work would be performed.  Derek's offers a 10 percent discount for advance payment, which we took advantage of.  Excellent work, reasonable cost.  Extremely organized and professional shop.  Great website as well.  We will use Derek's for all of our future shoe repair needs.
