  • Long wait time-well over half an hour fo rmy appointment-what's the point in scheduling an appointment?!
    - Manisha K.
  • For $350, Dr. Grifo gave us a phone consultation to help figure out what to do next after failed IVFs at another fertility clinic.
I liked that he was very straightforward, knew what was in our charts (i.e. had prepared well for the consult), clearly knew his stuff and had good ideas. He was also sympathetic, opening the conversation by expressing sympathy for our previous failed IVFs. And I've heard great things about him from a couple of people. Apparently he is responsible for both of Provider name locked. 's children.

But to my surprise, that $350 only got me about twenty minutes on the phone--that's $17.50 a minute!--and after the first ten or so I got the feeling that he was in a hurry to get off the phone. That would probably have seemed more normal to me if I hadn't already had better experiences with two other very well respected Provider name locked. . Dr. Provider name locked. at Provider name locked. spent easily an hour on the phone with us for $650 (i.e. about 40% less per minute than Dr. Grifo) answering every conceivable question we had in great depth, giving us excellent guidance, and sounding totally happy to go on talking as long as we needed to (we finally ran out of questions). And Dr. Provider name locked. at CCRM in Denver gave us a 40-45 minute phone consultation<Provider name locked. > for freeProvider name locked. >. (We got three "second opinions" because we don't want to do our next round of IVF without getting a really good sense of what went wrong and what to do next--it's just too expensive and too heartbreaking.)
But my grade is also influenced by the fact that I was "pre-annoyed" with Dr. Grifo's office because the scheduling was such a pain. I had to call and email a few times with his assistant just to get a phone consultation at all, because apparently he prefers in-person consults. That's understandable--it would be better in person--but other top fertility docs (and Grifo is definitely a top fertility doc) do phone consults routinely for prospective patients who live hundreds or thousands of miles away, because they understand we can't blow $1000+ just to come meet them when we haven't even decided yet whether we're going to do IVF with them. It felt to me like his assistant thought he was doing me a favor by agreeing to give me an appointment. But that's what doctors do, right? They talk to patients after reviewing their medical records, and the patients pay them! I just didn't like the vibe she gave me that it was a big favor.

And on top of the slight difficulty in even getting a phone consult, it was also annoying that the appointment was not scheduled for a specific time, but rather for a two-hour window on a weekday afternoon ("the doctor will call you any time between 1:30 and 3:30"). That meant we couldn't both participate in the call, because like most couples we both have jobs and can't just leave at 1pm and drift around for three hours waiting for the doctor to call (he called at almost 3:30) and then talking to him. I'm not sure why a phone consult can't be scheduled for a specific time, just like an in-person appointment. Dr. Provider name locked. called us as scheduled at 9am on the dot (we had arranged to get to work late), and Dr. Provider name locked. also set an exact appointment time (6:15PM, also doable with our work schedules) and called maybe 5 minutes late, if that.

So basically, I understand this guy is a great doctor and he did give us great insights, but the overall experience wasn't nearly as patient-friendly as the other two great fertility docs we spoke with, who also had great insights.

  • My wife and I were trying to have a baby and had seen a couple of highly regarded NY Dostors. With little luck and a bleak prognosis from our last doctor, we were lucky enough to get an appointment with Dr. Provider name locked. . From the moment we met him, we knew we were in the right hands. We did have a baby, thanks to him and his team, but we would honestly be as impressed if we had not been so fortunate. We just felt that if anyone could make this happen he could. Our first appointment, a consultation, we were Provider name locked. back and he was sitting in a room. He knew our history, my wife's chart from front to back--I have never had a doctor so prepared and as he spoke we were checking off our list of questions--as he was answering every one. We saw him over the course of the next 6 months, and on the 2nd round of IVF, we were pregnant and had a baby girl.
