AThey have wonderful programs there. They are superior for men's sexual health issues. They give away high grade condoms in a bid to control the spread of AIDS. They have a great design for communicating through signage. They have a great psychiatrist who specializes in treating ADD. Their record keeping is amazing. I can even access my records on an app. On the same app I can get messages from my doctor, it gives me my appointments and I can make new appointments. My only complaint is they did not enter my old records before this became electronic.

AI was able to get the insurance referral from my primary doctor. I was given wrong information from Health Partners representative. The Health Partners requires an insurance referral for any clinic that is not in network. Our primary doctor's office is good about giving us an referral when it is necessary.

AUnited Family Medicine is a family medicine clinic in the West 7th neighborhood of St. Paul. They run a family practice residency in connection with United Hospital, so they are a teaching facility. I believe they have around 18 physicians, several mid-level providers and then 18 residents (6 each year of a three year program). The clinic is not particularly convenient for us-- we do not live in the neighborhood, and we are well insured and could obtain health care elsewhere. We have chosen to stay at the clinic because of our relationship with our primary physician, Katherine Guthrie (see separate review). It is important to us that we have a relationship with our physician, and that she knows our family. The value of this became apparent when my elderly mother moved to town. She lived here for five years and ultimately passed away after an acute medical event. Dr. Guthrie was amazing with my mom, and having her engaged and actively involved in her care at the time of her death was a great gift for us.
We have had good experiences with other providers at the clinic, too, and would note that it is those relationships and experiences that keep us as patients. We also value their relationship with and presence at United Hospital; when their patients are in the hospital they are followed by UFM providers on hospital rotation. When Dr. Guthrie leaves (everyone should be able to retire eventually!), there are a couple of providers whom we might transition to (Sue Inoue, perhaps), but we would also seriously consider finding another, more convenient medical home.
I have given the clinic an overall grade of A, but noted that several areas are lower:
1. Availability. While the clinic purports to have same day availability, it is often very difficult to be seen for a minor ailment. They have evening hours, but do not answer the phone during them so it is not possible to try to come in between 5 and 8 unless you schedule that earlier in the day. Could be better. Grade B.
2. Punctuality. I know that the clinic works hard at this, but there is often more of a wait than seems reasonable. Plus they set your appointment twenty minutes before your actual appointment to accommodate intake.
3. Staff friendliness. These comments are about the staff, not the physicians. The phone staff are not friendly. Not. At. All. The team nurses, when you speak with them, are generally friendly and helpful. The in person people at the front desk vary.
4. Communication. Again, a challenging area. See comments above.
5. Office environment. Once you get beyond the front waiting room the office environment is generally fine. The front waiting room tends to be chaotic and sometimes seem unfriendly.
I know that the clinic is working on many of these items. They have an online medical record that I find useful, especially now that you can schedule visits using it. Their records people are very prompt in calling back. I would love to see them develop an eVisit program, but understand the difficulties in that.Reviewed by K D.
