    Johnson Tree Care LLC
Exceptional and responsive service. Branches had sprawled over my roof and into a neighbor's tree. Deadwood was removed and branches creating a safety risk were removed - leaving a duck nest in one tree and squirrel nest in the other, untouched. The work was performed quickly and cleanup was immaculate. Plus, it was fun to watch!

    Capital City Tree Experts
I had 2 ash trees removed, due to the emerald ash bore. I was sad to see them go, but Capitol City Tree Experts took them both down quickly and efficiently. They used a small lift system that let them cut the branches and lower them without making a mess of my lawn (even though it was wet and the ground was soft). They were professional and obviously knew what they were doing. I would hire them again.

Have an older home in Madison with several large old Silver Maples on the lot...sort of overplanted, but of greater concern was we're preparing to replace all the gutters & downspouts and the trees are constantly dropping branches that have damaged the old gutters. Mike Johnson came within a couple hours of being contacted and walked the job with my son. Had already planned to remove one tree...Mike suggested a second, as it was about 60% dead. BTW he's not just a tree trimmer/remover but a credentialed arborist. I this instance the relevance is he knows the trees & their growth/aging habits and possibilities. We agreed on a price, he gave me 24 hours notice and did all the work in a day, removing 2 trees and trimming 4 others; ground the stumps of the ones removed and actually one more stump from an old removal at no additional charge. Left stump grindings for mulch (a nice touch). All of this at a very reasonable price. I'd definitely hire again should the need arise and heartily recommend his service and performance. Didn't have to jump through hoops for the contract...he texted me a bid, I approved, he did the work, I paid him. Just like everyone wants it to be and seldom is.

Evan did more than a 'drive-by' estimate; he met with me on our property to look at and discuss what needed to be done, and I really appreciate that. He made sure to not trample the little plants under the trees that needed work, and he and his team cleaned up everything when they were done. We would hire him again without a doubt.

    Alonso Landscape Service LLC
Alonso et al. did a super job of digging out the stump, using a skidsteer-type machine. It took 3-4 hours, and they did leave a few tracks in the yard, but those will be fixed when spring comes (they've agreed to repair the affected grass). I thought the price of ~ $600 was great, the stump is gone, and they cleaned gutters at the same time, for a very reasonable price. They did arrive 30 minutes after expected, but it wasn't an issue. The stump was 2+ ft in diameter, with deep roots and they successfully removed main roots, and covered the area with my mulch when done.

Evan and crew did an excellent job beginning with a prompt estimate, communicating throughout, and getting us on his schedule to complete the job. When he and his crew arrived, they completed the job promptly, efficiently, and met all expectations set out in their proposal. He also had the fairest price estimate amongst the four companies we contacted.

    Johnson Tree Care LLC
Our huge old ash tree succumbed to Emerald Ash Borer and needed to be removed. We sought bids from four places, got quotes from three, and Johnson Tree Care was the lowest by a significant amount. In terms of the actual work done, Johnson Tree Care did a very competent job with a very tricky tree removal. The yards are too tight to bring in a bucket truck, so they had to climb the tree and saw down the branches that way, which I know made it a harder job. They did very well, dropped the actual trunk safely across the area of the yard where nothing was damaged, ground out the stump, and very carefully reinstalled the section of fence that they had to take out. The actual work that was done was high-quality. There were definitely issues, however. The crew twisted one of the hinges on our back gate in the process of doing the work, making it very hard to open and close. The owner of the company politely told me how to repair it but did not offer to fix it himself. I am well into my 60s with arthritis in both hands, and frankly I am not physically able to make repairs like that. So the gate still won't close. My biggest issue, and the reason that I am very unlikely to hire this company again, is the appallingly poor communication and responsiveness. The owner is a very nice gentleman, very friendly and polite, but he is absolutely awful at returning phone calls. It took one email and two voicemails just to get hold of him to tell him that we wanted to move forward with his bid. This was in early September, and for a variety of reasons, we settled on a tentative plan of the final Thursday or Friday of September for the removal, weather permitting. We also agreed that we would talk by phone on the Monday of that final week of September to discuss the weather forecast and finalize plans. Between Monday morning and Wednesday evening that week, I lost count of the number of voicemail messages I left, with no response. Finally, on Wednesday evening, I left a final message saying "since you haven't responded to any of my messages, I assume you have changed your mind about this job. That's fine, no problem, we'll move ahead with one of the other places that bid on the job. Please write 'canceled' across the contract and return it to me. No hard feelings." And about 30 minutes later, I got a call back. The gist of the call was that Thursday would be too windy, and he had another job lined up for Friday. Well, I don't want anyone to be unsafe and I know you can't control the weather, but we did set this up about three weeks previously. The owner said he would try for the following Monday, which I doubted because the forecast called for solid rain, and he promised that he would call on Sunday afternoon or evening to either confirm or reschedule. Sunday came. No phone call. I left another voicemail. Left another on Monday morning. Late Monday afternoon, I finally got a call back saying "well, it's too rainy today." Which I had expected, of course. The tree was finally removed the following day, and as noted, the work was done well, aside from the unrepaired damage to the gate. I want to emphasize here that I don't expect anyone to work in unsafe conditions. I do not expect anyone to be able to guarantee the weather forecast, particularly in Wisconsin. However, I DO expect that a business with whom I have a contract will respond to my calls. I expect that when someone says they will call me on a certain day, that they will do so. And unfortunately Johnson Tree Care did not live up to that expectation.

    Reon Monster Tree Service
My wife and I had the unfortunate experience of working with Reon's Monster Tree Service after a tree fell at our new house a few days before we closed. The previous owners booked him for "inclusive tree removal" to take care of it. I wish in retrospect we had canceled the service and looked elsewhere ourselves. Reon did not provide us with a detailed, written estimate. He bargained with us by text message and pressured us saying hed give us a reduced price if we let him do the job today when we balked. When he was initially delayed because of limited access to the property, we went ahead and got an estimate from another, well-established local company. Reon completed the job before we could cancel. Reons price was over $1,000 more than the other companys bid for same-week expedited service. We have worked with this other company before and have no reason to mistrust their estimate. He left us a messy pile of roots/wood around the very tall stump in our yard. He said his estimate (the one we didnt see) did not include stump removal. So much for "inclusive!" Here is the breakdown of costs: Reons Monster Tree Service: $2,637 (no stump removal) Expedited service from another local company: $1,350 (includes stump removal) Please be EXTREMELY cautious if you are looking at using Reons Monster Tree Service. Make sure you get a detailed, written estimate (not a text message) and a competitive bid before you agree to let Reon do work for you. Be wary of the contracting process and exorbitant rates!

    Johnson Tree Care LLC
Really impressed with this company! We put out calls to three different tree service companies. Mike from Johnson was the first to call back. He scheduled a time to estimate promptly, and showed up on time. He clearly demonstrated his knowledge of trees and experience with the kind of work we needed. The landscaping in our yard is very mature, and was about 10 years overdue for service. He listened to what I was looking for, guided me in the right direction and prepared me for how different the trees would look after they were properly cared for. They trimmed back a prairie fire crabapple, honeylocust, arbor vitea, birch & ash. They also cut back some buckthorn and other overgrown weeds. They got us on the schedule more quickly than expected and provided advance notice of the work day. They cleaned up everything and the yard looked great. I felt the price was very reasonable for the work and they honored the 10% Angie's List discount. I really can't think of a single thing to critique about our experience. Two different neighbors have already commented how professional the work was done throughout the day and how great it looks.

E mailed Evan right away. Had used him on a couple of other occasions so knew who I wanted. He responded and said he would try to fit us in on Friday. Fortunately the branch didn't hit the house (only took out electricity and cable) so after that was fixed, I wasn't worried about Evan not being here on Friday. He e mailed and said he would be here on Wednesday. I had to be gone in the morning but came home and everything was gone - neat and tidy.
