Garage Building reviews in Madison

  • The garage itself is mostly ok. The process and "service" has been a never-ending nightmare. The project has taken a year, is still incomplete and has been plagued with terrible communication and mistakes. The general contractor goes MIA for weeks and months, with no response to our communications. The job of of a general contractor is to coordinate, schedule and communicate. Our American Garage contact failed to anticipate issues or plan appropriately. Concrete pouring was delayed for over a month due to tree leaves. The wrong siding was ordered which resulted in significant delays. The wrong trim was initially installed and after it was fixed 5+ months later, it has a water-logged finish and dents. This, after the contractor waited for us to point it the trim issues before admitting they installed the wrong trim and doing the right thing up front. The siding was installed without an appropriate gap. The electrician did not install lighting the contract called for until we complained and badgered for weeks. The builders left a giant mess we had to complain about to get cleaned up. The worker who did the grading tried to charge us extra on the side. Some of these issues are sadly to be expected with construction, but the terrible communication, the amount of badgering we've had to do and the length of the project has left such a negative impression that we want others to know of our poor experience with American Garage. Beware.

  • I ordered a shed kit from them. They brought it up to Madison from Illinois, painted it, and installed it. I had to provide the base for it which was optional. It is of very high quality both in materials and workmanship. The door has very heavy duty hinges and steel reinforcing. The walls are built with 2"x4" studs. The roof is heavy plywood with long lasting shingles. The floor is also heavy plywood with 2"x4" cross bracing under it. As good as my 1st shed has lasted, I would go with Tuff Shed if I had it to do over again. They have a web site on the internet @

  • We couldn't be happier with the added space we now have for our family of 6. John was wonderful to work with, very thorough and answered all of our questions. He takes pride in his work and that comes through in the crews he has working with him. We had a big project (for our life anyway), and they worked hard to get things done timely around the major holidays of thanksgiving and Christmas. His construction crew worked extremely hard and never seemed to be bothered by my two young boys always gawking and goofing around with them. We've had the space for 10 months now, and I still don't know what we did before it. We've had numerous compliments on how it looks like it was always a part of our house. My husband and I couldn't be more pleased and would recommend Thompson builders to anyone. We will always be grateful for the end result of making our house the home we always wanted for our young family.

  • Brian was excellent. He was very responsive during the entire process. His bid was considerably lower than the other bids we received. After checking references (which he provided) and checking out some of his other work, we decided to go with him. We stayed within the budget that we talked about in the beginning and the finished product looks better than we were hoping. I was very impressed with the little things that he provided that we hadn't talked about, such as including a garage door opener, finishing the two closets with shelving/bars for hangers, and a few other smaller items that improved the addition. Whenever we had a question, he would respond to text, call, or email, usually within a couple hours. The sub-contractors he used seemed fine (although not quite as dependable time-wise, but that was out of his control). Besides the excellent work he provided, Brian is a good, honest person. We very much appreciate working with him.
We are planning to do a kitchen remodel in the next couple years and are planning to use Brian again.

  • I initially scheduled a tune up, knowing the my 21 year old furnace was in its golden years. We were told it had five cracks in the heat exchange and needed to be replaced. This didn't surprise me, but I was surprised at how knowledgeable the service technician was on new furnaces and A/Cs. He was able to help me decide which model to get, as well as close estimate on the price including installation. He was also able to walk me through pros and cons on the options routing the vents.
The installation went smoothly. It was on time and on budget, and the installers were very friendly. They also suggested that I didn't need a whole house humidifier, but if I ever decided that I did want one in the future, they would change me the same price, without an extra service charge for the additional visit.

  • I loved working with Jon. He was very responsive via email, phone, text. He answered all my questions and was patient.
He built a garage from slab to metal roof. His workmanship is high quality and I'd definitely use him again.

  • Documents (estimates, contract, billing) had errors and needed correction. Communication was poor and this caused problems. Owner was unprofessional (loud, accusatory, and angry) with me when an issue came up in the construction and again on the phone about a billing addition. In the end, I paid him more than the contract stated, even though there were no change orders, because it was worth it to me have no further contact.

  • It went very well. John Thompson met with me to scope out the house and get information for his bid. The plans for my addition were done by a designer John has worked with in the past and they provided a good basis for the bid. After John had put together his bid he came to my house to walk me through it. It was a very thorough package and included labor and materials quotes from all of the necessary sub contractors including: concrete, demolition, framing, windows, doors, plumbing, electrical, insulation, drywall, roofing, flooring, and disposal. I was impressed with all the work he had put into the bid package, with no commitment from me.
I decided to use Thompson for my project. I had to add about four feet to the front of the garage to allow for a new entry door from the garage into the house. Most everything went smoothly and according to plan. At one point, the framers swapped two windows openings; a large window where it should have been a small and vice versa. We caught it early and John made it right. Another time, the lag bolts used to secure the floor joists of the new room were too long and penetrated just slightly into the existing house. John had the framers back those bolts out and use the proper size, later the drywallers patched up the holes.
The project took a little longer than anticipated at the start, but that is mostly not John's fault. I had some family helping self perform some tasks - tiling the sun room, and interior trim. Getting those things done in the proper order caused the schedule to shift. John was very supportive of my desire to self perform a few things. He also helped me out in choosing and purchasing the siding I installed. I bit off a little more than I could chew in thinking I could do the stair railing. When I realized I couldn't do it properly, John was there with his carpenter to get it done.
All in all I am very satisfied with the project. My family and I now spend most of our time in the new space. The only overages above the original estimate were for the stair railing, which wasn't in the estimate because I said I would do it, and a new electrical box which was needed to bring the house up to code. Even though John's fee was based on a percentage of the overall cost, he didn't up his fee with these increased costs. That's something I appreciate and respect.
Thompson Custom Builders is a straight shooting organization. You work with them to find out what you want and how much it will cost, and that's what you get and what you pay.

  • Mike Crawley was punctual for the first, and every, appointment and provided exact and reliable information. The quote was comparable to others that we got. The work was performed excellently well and was exactly as described. The work was done exactly on schedule and the only variation from the quoted price was due to a minor change we requested mid-job: American was flexible about accommodating the change and charged exactly the agreed-upon amount. We were quite happy with the quality of the work and materials and with the final result. We were very pleased and would not hesitate to recommend them.

  • We've used them before. They were timely. They are well respected and good contractors. There is lots of good stuff about them. The job they had to do was kind of a difficult one and it was challenging. They kept us informed on when they were going to show up. They were good contractors. They did very nice work. They worked with us on a couple of tricky things. They are a little higher than other people but they are worth it. We would definitely use them again.
