    Horizontal Earthworks LLC
I made the unfortunate mistake of hiring Horizontal Earthworks for landscaping work on my property. For the amount of money that I paid them to have the work done ($3800), I assumed that I was hiring a team of professional landscapers. Instead, I was surprised to find out that Horizontal Earthworks employs a group of very low wage college students that spend as much time standing around goofing off (I was able to record them on my Ring security camera) as they do working, often entirely unsupervised. Of course, the supervisor, Becky, when she is on the job site, is incredibly slow, this is perhaps due to the fact that she frequently stops working and checks her Facebook status on her cell phone, which I observed her doing on several occasions. Thankfully, I did NOT hire Horizontal Earthworks to install a backyard patio. The owner (Scott Mayer) gave me a quote on a patio installation ($6500) that was more than double the price of other companies (average $3000). Scott told me that it would take 4-5 days to complete the job...I hired another contractor who completed the job in a little over one day.

    Walker Concrete
Darrell and his son did a fantastic job resurfacing and capping the concrete on our front porch and porch steps. While I had a difficult time pinning down other contractors from Angie's List for quotes for this concrete job, Darrell was responsive and helpful when I reached out to him. We had to book the job out about 6-8 weeks because his schedule was so full, but Darrell was candid about when the work would be started and followed through with the agreed timeline. Darrell also helped troubleshoot the possible sources of the concrete deterioration so we can more effectively prevent issues in the future. It is clear how much pride he takes in his work. Our new front porch looks better than I ever expected! I highly recommend Walker Concrete.

    AC Construction
Allejandro did an excellent job. We are incredibly impressed with the time and quality that was put into the work. We have only had our new walk for a few days and have already gotten many compliments on how great it looks. We are incredibily satisfied with the work that was performed and will be using him again in the future for sure. I have already recommended to other people I know that may need concrete work done.

    Foundation 1
I obtained 5 bids for the removal and replacement of our 22 x 24 garage floor which had cracked and sunk. Foundation 1s bid was in the area that best fit our budget with the most complete specifications. I owned a contracting company but am now retired. I was very impressed with the communication, punctuality, and professionalism of all the people I dealt with at Foundation 1. James was the salesman who looked at our job and provided the bid. John and his crew did the actual work. I was able to observe every part of the process hopefully without being too much of a nuisance. Johns crew exceeded my expectations and did a great job from start to finish. He and his crew did as good a job as my crew would have done in their day. I can give no higher compliment.

    Lee's General Contracting, LLC
We had worked with Lee's about a month prior for removal of dead trees. The tree removal was quick and completed within one day. We had asked at that time for an estimate to replace our steps and sidewalk which were crumbling away, to be replaced. Cameron gave us a very reasonable estimate and said that they could come out the following Tuesday (07/02) to get started. This is where our experience soured - They called on 07/02 and said that they couldn't come to the end of the week come to today and our work still has not been completed. Every week there has been an excuse about why they couldn't make it. They were supposed to be here on Monday then called Monday afternoon and said they couldn't come until yesterday because they were waiting on the concrete. He even sent my husband a text saying that they would be here in a bit then never showed up. No text, no call, nothing. We have had to adjust our work schedules multiple times to accommodate for the times that they said that they would be here then never showed up. If for some reason they did show up today (which they wont) I don't feel like I can trust this company to complete the work. They are proving to be very shady.

    Ramirez Concrete
Done in good time, and done properly - we laid out basic measurements, but they made sure concrete was pitched properly to drain. Only negative - they left a lot of concrete rubble for us to dispose of (they took most of it).

I used an architect who helped design and supervise the progress of my new garage/art studio, 2012. Dwane worked well with the architect. I was committed to the project. Estimate of time of project? 6-8 weeks. How long did it take? 6 months. They are building everywhere in my area and is a good sign for this older neighborhood. My driveway started a hairline crack the first year. They were uninterested. It reached across the driveway. The drywall tape started peeling and I let it go, and now my beautiful trellis is rotting, tipping and cracking the outside stucco. They took a look at it, ran a large nail through the wood to temporarily lift it almost level. But the cedar wood is rotting, the crack is still there and the other side of the trellis is starting the same disintegration. It would have been so convenient for them to fix this. They were in the neighborhood since last fall.

    Pier Genius
Initially owner Matt Price had very good communication with us and showed up on time to begin the work. Matt estimated the work would take approximately three days. He had 2-4 workers hand digging the holes for the pier installation each day. Due to the consistency of the soil around our house (black clay) this process took more like a week and a half just to dig the holes and install the piers. However, given the conditions of the soil this was understandable. The crew then started removing the concrete to install new concrete. This also took longer than we expected. When the concrete was finally poured on a Monday, they were not able to get it finished to a smooth and professional surface. Im not sure why they couldnt get it smoothed out (concrete too dry, very hot day, not enough workers, other). Regardless, Matt came to us and stated that he was not satisfied with the product and would make it right. At that point they basically quit working to finish it and left it as poured (very rough and looking like it has been driven on repeatedly). Matt stated they needed to let it dry a few days and he would be back on Friday to present some options to us to correct the situation. He was going to look into putting a pea gravel/epoxy surface over our entire driveway and new concrete to prevent having to tear it out and redo. Or if we did decide we wanted to tear it out, he would hire a concrete company to do it all. Unfortunately, that is the last we ever saw or heard from him. The crew never returned to haul off the landscaping they removed when they dug for the piers. They left all of this shrubbery AND their lunch trash laying all over our yard. They cleaned out the concrete truck after they quit pouring and left it in a huge pile in our yard. They had a dumpster in our driveway with the old concrete (which he told us he sold to a friend for fill). That disappeared on the Wednesday after they poured the concrete, but we had no contact when they came to get it. We sent the owner, Matt, pictures of all the trash and concrete and asked him to please come clean it up as his contract had stated he would, but received no response. We sent him several text messages and voice mails asking to meet to resolve the situation, but have never heard from him again. Fortunately, we only paid him half of the contract price when he started the job and I have no intention of paying him the rest. We have had to contract with another company to tear out and redo the concrete, so I will be spending the money for that. We also had to haul off all of the old shrubbery and workers trash. The external piers appear to be installed well and the settling issues we were experiencing seem to have been resolved when he jacked up the house using the piers. Our contract states that we have a life-time warranty on the pier installation. However, given the lack of response we have received from Mr. Price, I dont think this warranty is worth the paper on which it is written.

Quick, reasonable, professional, efficient. Great job, no drama. Demolished and repaved 2/3 of driveway (City had re-paved easement) and injected flowable-fill concrete in void beneath concrete porch.
