Home Builder reviews in Hartford

We were not living at the house while the work was being done and much of the time we were out of town.  David and Ben outlined what needed to be accomplished each week and what decisions we needed to make so the work could progress efficiently. That was very helpful.  They also seemed to coordinate well with the Town of West Hartford building department.

David and Ben were very responsive and made sure that all of the subcontractors came on time and did the required work for the day. Anytime I called, texted or emailed either of them, they responded to my questions immediately.  If they needed to research the answer, they did so quickly and got right back to me.  They seem to have an excellent report with all of their subcontractors and vendors. All of the subcontractors (kitchen designer, electrician, plumber, tile and floor company, HVAC company etc)  throughout the renovation were professional and timely.

The work was completed within the time that David estimated it would be. Everything went smoothly.  We are very happy with the result.   It came out just as we had hoped and we thoroughly enjoy our new kitchen and master bathroom.

We recommend the David Stoner company for medium and large renovations  as well as building an entire home.

As above. Whole job took them 4 full days (they also had to remove the older flat roof before framing the new one).
Team worked from 7AM to 5PM, and part of Saturday. Very professional. Friendly, tidy, quiet, competent.
(I've had other work in the past by OTHER construction companies who could stretch a 1-week job into a 6-month job, and in some cases had an 'attitude' problem). My wife and I were so pleased (and pleasantly surprised) that this company was so professional and agreeable to work with. They kept us (and the Building Department inspector) informed of every step.
In the future we'll never hire any other builder than GN Construction.

Replaced old jet pump system with submersible pump system. It took them about 6 hours to locate, dig up, expose the well head, remove the 75 feet of tubing, and then replaced with the new equipment. They did a good job, but I feel that they overcharged me. The original quote was in the range of $3500 to $6500 because they did not know how deep the well was. They said some wells can go 400 feet or more but it turns out that this one was only 75 feet. They said I could save about $800 if I re-used the existing pressure tank. As you can see from the actual cost, that was not even factored in. Also, no heavy equipment was used to dig up the well. It was 2 guys with shovels digging for about 45 minutes. It took them longer to locate the well head than anything else. Also, they used the existing wiring to power the pump - so no re-wiring was needed. I should have done my research before agreeing to this job. If I had signed on to Angie's beforehand I would have picked a different company to do the job. Lesson learned.

Bryant was helpful way before the actual construction began in helping review and revise architect plans and maximizing what we could get out of the work.  There was a slightly less expensive bid for the project but we decided that it was way more important to have someone completely knowledgeable and trustworthy.
When people say that the estimate for a home improvement job is never long enough, that's true.  However, Bryant kept us up to date and informed about expected delays and time frames at each step of the way, even having to correct an oversight by the architect midproject.   As far as I could tell, there was only one delay that was avoidable.  Bryant was on top of it immediately and did what he could to rectify the issue.
He went above and beyond to get the kitchen usable by the holidays and helped in many other ways to make the construction period bearable.
Bottom line is the finished product is comfortable, very well built and looks great.
I would (and have many times already) recommend him to friends.

It went great! Birchwood Builders are hard working, dependable, and do a fantastic job. They are great communicators, which is a rare find. They are all a pleasure to have working at the house, and go above and beyond to make sure that all your wants and needs are met. I would enthusiastically recommend BB to anyone!

We had major damages of water and other things.  He never checked the work at the end of the day and he was never around.  He came over and told us that the water was coming out of the ice fans.  A number of inspectors inspected the work he had done and none of it met code of the area.  There was a guarantee fund for the residence.  The original price we got was roughly $150,000, but it was about $330,000 which was way beyond that was to be.  The work was very poor and I am having it done by certified people.  The house looks good, but the work is shabby.  The responsiveness was pretty good and he would show up immediately.  They were not professional and I will never use them again.

Here are all the ways his job was shoddy and unprofessional. Again, it does pain me to write this review. Neil is fundamentally a nice person.

    1. Neil was almost guaranteed to overestimate his ability to complete any part of the job on time. He gave us a relatively optimistic picture of when he will be done, but, probably he had taken on more jobs than he could handle, the whole project was delayed.

    2. We had talked to other clients so we were prepared for this to an extent. But it still dragged on longer than we anticipated.

    3. While the overall look of the finished kitchen is okay, there are many things that are not, or have come undone over time. Neil said that he would stand by his work, but has essentially refused to come back and fix anything.

    4. Two boards covering the toe-kicks under the cabinets have caved in. One has to be ripped out and replaced. The other can be nailed back in. After asking Neil to come back and fix it, he rudely told us to take care of it ourselves at home-depot!

    5. One of the sliding drawers essentially came apart earlier this year. I had to take it all down, screw the side support back into the side of the cabinet, and then put the drawer back together. I did not even bother calling Neil since I did not want to be insulted again.

    6. The washing machine has not been fixed properly. It is loose and we fear that it may be vibrating because of that. Again, no help from Neil.

    7. The garbage disposer started leaking last year. Luckily, I used some plumber's putty and fixed that. It had not been installed tightly enough so the putty had worked itself loose because of the operation of the disposal unit.

    8. A cabinet around the refrigerator is coming apart. Again, no help from Neil. I will have to fix it myself!

We got lucky on at least one score. We had asked him to replace the marble floor in our foyer with hardwood. He got us pre-finished boards that were a different width and color than the rest of the house. Thank god we got someone else to give us a second opinion. While it took much more money, we actually got a floor that is almost identical to those in the rest of the rooms around the foyer so it blends in very well. Escaped that one!

In conclusion, be careful of Accent on Homes. They are cheap but it shows.
