Solar Panel Installation reviews in Greensboro

  • It's too bad the rating scale does not go to A+. My first contact with Joe Sheffield and his business was about 5 years ago. I had a solar electric and solar hot water system installed by a different company and the entire system failed (the install was so poor it actually caught fire, but thats another story). Joe came out and repaired all the flaws and expanded the system for me. He also took detailed photos of the entire process to record all the defects for me to help recover my money from the original contractor. Pricewise he was very reasonable, showing me options throughout the process to make it economical. He did all the paper work involved, not just the permits and construction, but all the dealing with utility company.
Quality of work was outstanding, never cut corners. Always made certain to show me details of install as it progressed. Even hidden work, like pulled cable he always went a step over to make it neat and efficient.
Communication was thorough an ongoing through the whole process, I always knew what was going on and what was coming next.
But beyond the quality of work and reasonable cost is the customer service. Any time I called Joe, he always made time to discuss my questions and help solve any issues. My most recent contact with him was just last week. My solar hot water system tripped the ground fault and was not running. Even though all my equipment is well past warranty he went through possible causes, told me a couple things to try and told me if that did not work to call him back and he would come check it out. (BTW, hot water is up and running again, thanks)
I recommend Joe and his company highly. Not just because his prices are reasonable and the work quality is outstanding, but because of the customer service after the job that he provides. It truly provides peace of mind on a project like this to know that he will still have my back for any issues.

  • I am not sure how relevant this review now is, since he is no longer doing these installations. However, he remains in the solar business and so I have chosen to provide this review. He was professional and personable in his work with us, but...

    1. He insisted that locating the panels at a low spot on our roof was sufficient. After inadequate hot water for some time, especially in winters, we paid another excellent company - DG Solar - to move the panels to a high location, with fine results. This failure of Honey Solar to locate the panels properly at the outset cost us an additional $900.

    2. In the process of relocation, we discovered a deteriorating place in one of the panels. Honey Electric first said and quot;we will make this right, and quot; and now has declined to be engaged in warranty initiatives, even though the panels are still under warranty.

  • We had already done some research about solar panels and understood that there are a lot of variations in systems -- whether they provide power at night, whether they provide battery backup, whether they are in a fixed location or travel with the sun, etc.The cheapest we had found that would meet our needs was around $40,000.
We were very surprised when we found a system from Carolina EcoSmart that would meet our needs for $12,000 and we wanted to learn more.
We spoke with a Carolina EcoSmart representative on the phone about adding panels to our house who said an in-house consultation would be necessary. So one Saturday, the salesman arrived, sales booklet in hand. He explained that this was a smaller system, but for a small 3 bedroom / 2 bath house like ours the $12,000 package would cover 90% of our needs. We were excited about the possibilities and asked more questions about the output. He said an engineer would come to take measurements and we could ask him the more technical questions. We gave him a check for $4,000 as a deposit.
The following Saturday, the engineer arrived to take measurements and look at the positioning, but he was clueless about specs for the panels and how well they would cover our electricity needs. He said he was only there to take measurements.
We gave him an additional $4,000 check (the final payment would be due after completion). We talked between us a little more and were dissatisfied with the way things were looking. We called Carolina EcoSmart immediately to try to resolve this and spoke with Matt Phillips, the company president. He explained that, of course, these panels wouldn't come close to covering the needs of a 1500 sq ft house; that they would cover more like 25%. We explained that was not good enough and we needed to not go any further. $12,000 is a lot of money to spend on a partial solution. He explained it was too late, that the order had been placed.
We put a stop payment on the second check which made him angry, but still unwilling to compromise and unwilling to return any of our $4,000. (His solution was for us to pay the additional $4,000, have the panels delivered, and we could find someone else to do the installation!) Phone calls and letters are still unanswered. I hate it, but now we have to pursue legal action.
I am amazed with the lack of professionalism, product misrepresentation, and downright lack of cooperation on the behalf of Carolina EcoSmart.

  • It went very well and we enjoyed working with Bill, who knows his business, having working in solar since the 1980's. We would recommend him him to anyone and the solar route is a very good way to go, even into 2009 with the tax credits having been extended (remember a tax credit is real money, unlike a tax deduction).

  • From the estimate to the installation Honey Solar could not have been better. I would highly recommend this company for anyone needing solar heating or electric. True professionals.
