Home Energy Audit reviews in Detroit

    Ecotelligent Homes
I originally hired Ecotelligent Homes to perform an energy audit on my home. I was so impressed with the professionalism and the detail that went into their work, that I knew I wanted to hire them to update the insulation in my home. They identified areas of asbestos insulation both in the attic and the basement (that I was not aware of!) that needed to be removed/remediated, and helped me set up a plan that worked with my budget to accomplish a safer and more energy efficient environment for my home. They thoroughly explained all options available to me and were so great about answering any questions I had...including making the application for rebates as seamless as possible. The Ecotelligent crew is awesome...super friendly and respectful of your space. I highly recommend them!

Got the whole package for LESS than the price of JUST the roof quoted from another company. We loved their competitive pricing. Roof looks great. Installs were scheduled quickly. An energy audit was included and qualified us for extra rebates! Bonus! Happy customer!

    Building Performance Solutions
Alex assessed my needs based on listening to my goals of having a more comfortable living space as well as feedback from the energy audit that he performed.  With a limited budget, we came to an agreement on what services would be most effective.  He was very knowledgable about the serviced he would perform as well as building processes overall.  Communication throughout the project was always easy and prompt.  Services were performed on time and as scoped.  Alex also helped to guide me thru the "Michigan Saves" program and was very knowledgable about how to get financing and paperwork processed for this program.  The work perfomred seems to have made a big difference in the comfort and efficiency of my home.  Thanks to Alex and Building Performance Solutions!

It was interesting, but too expensive. So I didn't end up doing anything more than $75. The service that I contracted for, everything was great. But then they gave me quotes that were way way way outside my price range. So I would never use them for any further service. If I wanted to do the same thing again, I would probably use them for that.

    Air Conditioning Engineers
I feel sad about the AC system we purchased. I feel like it was less efficiently installed, delivered, and "finalized" than I had hoped when we initially signed on with these guys. There were literally countless problems at the get-go: sales person didn't communicate all vent locations to installers; installers made TWO cut mistakes in the upstairs hardwood floor and/or plaster ceiling of the living room; the insulated ducts were very specifically supposed to be located in the BACK of the closets (closets are most convenient place to "hide" ducts from view) instead of the FRONT where they were ultimately installed; the actual air handler broke after a year and water damaged the upstairs ceiling since the handler was installed in the attic; electrical install was not done correctly either.

It was initially realllllly difficult to locate a manager who was overseeing the project. There seemed to be no one in particular in charge--and it was a situation of being transferred from one person to the next to the next....finally when a manager took the reigns on the project, things improved *slightly* but overall the experience was really disappointing. I feel like they were not quite equipped to retrofit an old house--largely the installers were not prepared (or maybe new, or just not on their A-game),but that should have been overseen ever more tightly by the manager.

It seems very first-world-problem to complain about my A/C install, but I am reminded EVERY time I go to use the thermostat--(which the installer placed in the upstairs hallway, on a different floor than the boiler heat thermostat, which is weird) that it is one of several things that remind me that things could have been done much better in general. And where they placed the ducts in the closets are a total pain.

Not sure if newer installs are their thing, but I really recommend anyone fine-tooth-comb your contract and experience before hiring them for any retrofit job.

    Blanket Insulation Services
Upon purchasing the Angie's List "Big Deal" for $59, Blanket Insulation contacted me right away.  They sent a packet of material to my house including the photo of the technician who would be performing the audit.  Greg, the technician, spent over 3 hours going through my house and making comments about performance and efficiency.  While he was very professional and polite, it became very apparent to me that this company was not going to be able to resolve the issue I called them for (very cold Master Bedroom/Bath) - an assessment agreed to by the technician.  At the conclusion of the audit, I was presented with a list of work for over $3,000 that did not address my primary concern.  When I dug into the cost details a little further, they are charging labor rates in excess of $200/hour!!  I thanked them for the audit but could not hire them to do work on my house due to the excessive labor rates that far exceed any skilled labor in the home improvement market.
Given that they could not resolve my issue and that they charge what I believe are outrageous prices for their work - I cannot recommend this company.  The only tool in their bag seems to be insulation, so if your problem cannot be fixed by application of foam and/or other types of insulation techniques, then you will be wasting your time (as I did).

    Blanket Insulation Services
All services were performed as advertised. Overall, I was happy with the analysis provided and it identified all of the problem areas that would need to be addressed to improve the energy efficiency of the home. My only complaint would be that we were not informed in advance of how long the process would take. Blanket had to come out a second time because my wife had to leave 2 hours after he arrived. The first visit duration was just over an hour. The second appointment lasted another 3 hours to perform some additional inspection, take pictures and run the imaging and blower door testing. You will need 3.5 to 4 hours of time to effectively complete this service.

    Brand New Construction LLC
Charles Barlet at Brand New Construction was very professional, talented and very thorough in his work. He was easy to get ahold of via phone and arrived within 1 day to perform an attic inspection (I found via coupon on angie's list). He provided detailed estimates on the work. About 1-2 weeks later I had the insulation blown in, however his workers didn't remove and replace the moldy insulation as was in my contract. Charles and his brother arrived soon afterwards and replaced the insulation themselves. Not only that, but they also improved the attic door seal that his workers had just completed. The cost seemed about average from what I could see from multiple website searches. I highly recommend Charles and his company!

The guys came on time, pointed out several areas that I could maximize energy and savings, and did a thermal imaging to point
out deficiencies in the insulation. Unfortunately, because I had some asbestos over some pipes in the basement they could only do a partial inspection.

    Michigan Environmental Testing Services

We have an investment portfolio of over 20 single houses in Detroit. Darrul Stocks is our inspector. We normally called him to give an initial inspection and assessment before we decided to rehab the house, during the rehab process, we also called him to do a checklist on the work done and how it was performed. Darrul always responded and worked promptly. He provided professional inspection and top quality of services. He is very trustworthy, just and loyal, and we have done quite a few rehab projects with him. He is like our "fresh air" in Detroit.
