"Very well. Called them and he explained the cost of the dumpster and how the cost of what the City Dump charges. I mailed him two checks, he dropped it off then" I called him when we were done. He picked it up that day and called me to tell me what the City Dump charged for the contents. He then mailed me a receipt. I cannot remember the exact amount he charged.

"The company was very prompt. Providing a dumpster within a few hours of calling. Nice big dumpster and prompt pick up! Would use again.

While most homeowners can take care of basic trash disposal on their own, large jobs, such cleaning out your basement or renovating your bathroom, require a more complex process.

Angie's Answers

I second the original question (still unanswered). Speaking as someone who logged in today to try to find an attorney, I see this category as one that's exactly what I have my Angie's List membership for:

1. It's important that I find a good one
2. I'm not an expert enough to know myself who is a good one
3. The industry is full of advertisements and misinformation
4. I wish I knew what experiences other people have had

I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

I'm not sure Angie et. al. want you to have a complete answer to this question. By re-subscribing at the Indiana State Fair in 2012, I think I paid $20.00 per year for a multi- year subscription. Maybe even less. At the other extreme--and I hope my memory isn't faulty about this--I think the price, for my area, for ONE year was an outrageous $70.00. And they debited me automatically without warning. I had to opt out of that automatic charge. I like Angie's List, but if some of the companies they monitor behaved the way they do in this respect, they'd be on some sort of Pages of Unhappiness. I'll be interested to see if this comment gets published or censored out of existence.

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.

You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. You are messing with gas, venting issues, electrical wiring{electric water heater} and updated code issues such as a drain pan and tempature and relief drain lines for heaters that currently do not have them. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads  I would assume. Tank type water heaters have changed over the last several years and with these safety changes come bigger prices. The price of steel thanks to China is skyrocketing and tank type water heaters are made of steel. Most wholesale plumbing supply companies cannot match what the big box stores are selling at retail to consumers. I happen to think from research that heaters such as Rheem, Bradford White and AOSmith who have been in business forever make a better product than what you can buy in the big box outlets. You also have to take in consideration the location of the water heater that is being replaced. Is it in the house, basement, garage or attic. Most 40 and 50 gallon water heaters that are purchased in a plumbing wholesale store in Texas cost between 300-340 for a 6 year warranty heater with 6 year on parts and tank. Speaking of warranty. Most big box companies will take a least 24 hours to a week to get your warranty problem taken care of. Most reputable plumbing companies will give same day service if they installed the heater.

So lets break down a typical install at cost to a licensed plumber in Texas

Heater: $315, water shut off $6.50, water flex lines or unions to code $20, gas flex line and cut off to code $12, misc fittings $15, Total $368.50 Lets add a 35% profit which is some what low  for a business $129, Total 497.50

This doesnt  include permits, pan and drain or any venting issues. The vent must go from the heater to the outside of roof using double wall vent.

Cost of permit on average $60

Most plumbing companies allow for 3 hours of time for a water heater. This includes picking the new one up. Delivering out to house. Draining and removing old water heater. Hauling off old heater. Installing new heater up to code. Going down to city and pulling permit.

Average Labor charges for heater installs $400

That would make this install run without extras on any code issues $957.50

I just had a 50 gallon gas water heater installed in my house for $1200 but I needed a pan installed. I used a licensed plumber.

Todd said it best.

An itemized list / cost breakdown, more often than not is used against the contractor when it is shared with other builders who will then beat it.

Good contractors use good people, and good people cost more.  Just the cost of having the appropriate insurance / bond can be the difference between winning a job or losing it ot a 'lower bid'.

It is the rule of three; there is Good, Cheap and Fast.  You can have any two:  Good and Cheap, won't be Fast; Good and Fast, won't be Cheap;  Cheap and Fast, won't be Good!

When comparing bids, it isn't the cheapest or the 'nicest' person you should select.   You should understand why there is a large price difference (it shows there are gaps in your design program or what you have asked for specifically, which means there may be arguments later).  If most of the bids are in line, and one is way high or way low,  you want to know why before dismissing or selecting them.

A price-only decision almost always costs more in the long run.

Good luck!

Dumpster Rental reviews in Columbus

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! We asked them to deliver a dumpster for 5 days for a move out. We finished moving on Sunday and they were scheduled to pick up the dumpster the next day. We left and they charged our credit card $295. Weeks later we receive a phone call from an EXTREMELY RUDE lady who told us that the dumpster was still at the house ...More and that we owed them for the entire time...... time that THEY forgot to pick up the dumpster!
This was an extremely unprofessional phone call from and extremely RUDE lady and we will of course dispute it on our credit card should they decide to try and charge us for THEIR MISTAKE!
If the owner of the company reads this I hope he becomes aware of the horrible customer service provided by the lady who called us.
I would NEVER suggest doing business with such a business.

This was the best experience I've had with a dumpster company. Called each week to see if we needed it switched out. Very friendly staff and drivers.

Container was due to be delivered at noon on Wednesday. They brought it a couple of hours early. It was clean, painted, and suitable for cleaning out our garage. Container was picked up on Friday. They were on time and professional. The price was lower than others that we checked.

I just talked with and she is an angel on earth for what she did for me today. When I was helping my friend going through her condo and doing a lot of tossing, I had lost my hearing aid during the process. I paid $2750.00 for this one hearing aid. Now I'm sick that I bought the top of the line digital hearing aids. I ...More called this AM and offered a generous reward if this device could be found. She and her son went through every single piece of trash trying to find this hearing aid, and she assured me that it was not in that dumpster.
And this AM she told me she didn't care about the money I offered!!! How could I say enough good things about this business?

Please use them for any service you might need that they can provide!

I called at 7:45am this morning and by 11am all of the items were gone! picked up all of the stuff we had cleaned out from our garage, explained how he would recycle everything that was possible and cleaned up with a broom at the end. He was fast, curteous and extremely punctual!

The reserving process was easy, even calling one day in advance. The dumpster was to be delivered between 7:00-9:00 am on a Saturday morning but did not arrive until 10:00 due to road closures for the Columbus marathon. The delay is understandable but I had to call to verify it was still being delivered when they did not show up during the 2 hour ...More window.
We filed the dumpster to the top and were done with it late Saturday and the company was able to pick it up Sunday which was great to get it out of our way. No fees and no hassle. Very easy process and good, competitive pricing.
- Jennifer H.

Emailed the company using their online form to order a . We got a call back the same day and scheduled a 13 cubic yard for that same weekend. We had to do a major garage clean-out (2.5 car garage that wasn't totally full of junk) and do some basement demo. It all fit well enough in the ...More we could've easily thrown away more when you add in closet cleanouts and such.
We loved that the price was all inclusive (taxes, dump fees, pick up and delivery). We had the for a week but needed it for only
4 days--so we just called and they came out the next day and drove away at no extra charge.
Side note: The drivers were very good at maneuvering through tight our tight driveway! They got it farther back than we thought they would, in a narrow 1-lane drive with a gate and no room for error...otherwise you hit the house. (Something we've done ourselves multiple times!) Just make sure you think about how you're going to get large items to the and can access the walk-in side how you want to---something narrow drives make difficult (no fault of though!).
We'd definitely recommend them.
- Dan and Hilary K.

Great Service, arrived on time, picked up on time and was very accomodating to put the dumpster as close to my house as possible, per my request.
- Hope K.
