Home Energy Audit reviews in Cleveland

I called the company 7/2/19 and left a message for a return call. On the same day Fred (the owner) called me back and we mutually agreed on 7/10/19 for a home visit. During this visit it became apparent that Fred had quite a lot of hands on experience plus several certifications from a variety of sources to prepare him for this industry. I directed him to the areas where he explained the processes he felt would make my 2900 sq ft., split level home built in 1974 more energy efficient. I asked a multitude of questions and was impressed at the professional manner in which he was able to reasonably answer all of my questions without being disturbed. Secondarily, I had spoken with a few other contractors so that I could compare each companies' work plan and also their final cost. One company wanted to pump the cellulose insulation on top of the existing fiberglass insulation. But during my preliminary research I found that this was not the best method and fortunately Mr. Skillicorn agreed that while it may cost a little more its best to remove the old insulation, make your repairs and then blow in the new. I ultimately accepted his proposal and was put on a schedule to begin 3 weeks later. His three man crew were also very professional but friendly. They arrived promptly each day at 9 am. They covered all adjacent areas with drop cloths to prevent dirt and damage and cleaned up each afternoon. They worked diligently together and there were no lapses of time. The job was completed in 3 days on 8 /16/19 and I would recommend this company to others who look to insulate their homes. Lastly "Insulation Systems" has agreed to submit the necessary Forms to "Dominion Energy Ohio's Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program" who had surveyed our home and that enables me to receive a small portion of the total cost of this job in the form of a rebate for boosting the energy of our home.

I'm in the trades myself so I understood what he was telling me and the things that I didn't know he recommended me to a another source. When you hire Walter and Whole House Solutions, he works for you not the seller or the real estate agent.

The inspector is INCREDIBLY thorough, he provides the assurance you need to make a decision to purchase the home. All possible repairs are clearly outlined, including photos, with cost estimates and level of severity. I highly recommend this company for any property inspection.

    Berry Insulation
Taking advantage of Dominion's home energy audit/rebate program through their contractor, Good Cents, we had an audit done in July and received estimates from 3 different companies.  We were prepared to go with Kilroy, but they kept pushing the date back so when Berry followed up and offered to price-match, we chose to proceed with them instead.  They began the job on 11/9, insulating half of the sidewalls.  They returned on 11/10 and because it was raining that day, they stayed for only 3 hours and insulated the attic slopes, inserting plenty of baffles for air circulation, and also sealed the band joists and around the chimney in the basement.  They promised to return on 11/11, but called that morning to say they wanted to change this to 11/13.  Like most households with working people, our schedules were already in a state of chaos to accommodate them, so we were unhappy with this last minute change and asked them to come that day as planned.  They sent out a different crew who finished the other half of the sidewalls, then came indoors, set up the blower door and caulked around windows.  The attic hatch was to be weather-stripped and they were unsure of how to do this, and ended up simply applying a thin piece of gummy adhesive (which is already falling off) that we could have easily done ourselves.  This item was an extra $30 and is not subject to rebate.  There was a big draft in the closet next to the chimney and their opinion was that a hole would need to be cut in the attic floor in order to seal the chimney chase.  That sounded extreme so we asked for someone else's opinion on that and in the end a piece of drywall was installed in the closet ceiling which was a very good solution.  This and other work was completed by Kevin who had given the original estimate.  We communicated mostly by email and although he was unresponsive for 8 days around Thanksgiving, he did return on 11/20 and 12/3 to install weather-stripping on two doors, to seal the furnace and ducts with mastic, and to seal around the attic exhaust fan and chimney at the attic floor with expanding foam.  He also repaired a hole in another closet where the sidewall crew had drilled through the wall, and repositioned a row of siding which had slid out of place after not being properly hooked to its nails.  We later had to pick about a dozen circular pieces of wood out of the landscaping and also scrape expanding foam off the siding.
With an original time estimate of "hopefully two days", the resulting five days seemed excessive.  Our credit card was charged on 11/24, well before the job was actually completed.  The personnel were professional and friendly, and conscientious about wearing booties in the house, as well as laying down plastic for the hallway carpet while working in the attic.  But overall we felt that this company did not really seem to have their act together and that if we weren't diligent, the job would not have been done properly, if finished at all.  We assume that everything was done correctly in the end, but Good Cents has not yet returned for their final testing.  In fact, they informed us that their 2015 rebate funds are now depleted so we are on a waiting list for next year.  It's hard not to wonder if we would now be getting our rebate if the job hadn't taken almost a month to complete.

I had a problem with air coming into the house and they were supposed to evaluate and fix that problem which never happened.
I think they are the ones that broke into that house and stole some things.
They came out the first time and then there was nothing else after.
I would never use them, I would never call them, and I would never recommend them.

    Energy Smart Home Performance

I was looking for help on how to solve a severe ice dam problem.  While doing internet research on how I might solve this problem I ran across the Energy Smart Home Performance website.  Their approach to solving home performance problems made a lot of sense to me.  Instead of just looking to fix the symptom (ice dam) their approach is figure out the likely cause(s) and address those.  In other words, look at the entire house as an interconnected system.  Luckily this company is located in NE Ohio so I contacted Nate Adams and he came out for an initial consultation with my wife and me in March 2015.  We talked about the ice dams but he also kept asking additional questions to see if there were other areas of the house that we would improve if we could.  I mentioned that my 2nd floor office and the master bedroom were either too warm or too cold and in general the 2nd floor temperature was significantly different from the first floor.  Long story short we hired Nate to do a complete analysis of our home?s performance.  It started with a blower door test allowing him to identify the amount of air leakage and where those leaks were.  The infrared camera images showed some huge air leaks in the top plates on the 2nd floor, the soffits in the two 2nd floor bathrooms and the knee wall in the master bedroom.  He then developed a complete plan to address our issues and concerns.  The plan included specific steps to take, along with estimated costs for a contractor to do each one.  Nate?s service included a three tier model (Budget, Sweet Spot, Complete) and we then met to develop a comprehensive plan of which steps we would do and who would do them.  I?m a DIY?er so I ended up doing a lot of the work myself (saving myself a significant amount of money) and allowing us to do almost everything in the Complete model.  Nate was heavily involved in the entire process from helping me find contractors to perform some of the work to answering all of the questions I had along the way.  Nate is not a general contractor, he is a home performance consultant and is generally paid by the hour so he can do as much or as little as you want.  He generally doesn't do most of the actual work himself, that is done by contractors or yourself, but he can act as your agent with the contractors if you wish and he has contacts with a number of excellent contractors depending what work you need done.

Upon completion of the project we had reduced the blower door number by an outstanding 44% from the initial measurement.  This was done through a combination of air-leak sealing (rim & band joists, knee walls, top plates in attic) using spray foam, spray foam insulation in the master bedroom cathedral ceiling (done in conjunction with a roof replacement), removal of fiberglass attic insulation and replacing with 18? of blown in cellulose, and a number of smaller items.

It was a fun project that took about 6 month?s elapsed time from my initial meeting with Nate until it was all done.  I learned a lot during the project and Nate was great to work with.  Although we?ve only had a limited ?test period? our home already feels much more comfortable with no big temperature differences between the 1st and 2nd floors and my office and the master bedroom are much more comfortable overall.  We?re looking forward to the energy savings these changes will bring but that was not really the major reason for doing the project; for us it was really more about having a comfortable home where we can enjoy being in any part of the house.

All went well! They finished my whole house in two days. The workers were there on time each day and were professional. They answered any questions I had. They did a great job of putting my siding back with minimal damage to my paint, and also did a great job cleaning up when they were done. I also thought their quote was very reasonable compared to another company I got a quote from. The owner sent me a hand written note thanking me for the business, which I thought was a nice touch. I received an audit on their work through an energy efficient program I went through and they verified that the work was well done. I would recommend!

We have had the good fortune of working with Walter on a number of projects.  He initially did a full energy audit for us and advised us on issues like how and where to insulate.  He has educated us on how to save money and resources in our home.  Walter is thoroughly knowledgeable, and he is a very good and patient teacher.  We recommend him without reservation.

It went great. Scheduling was done quickly, and Don arrived promptly with his gear. He showed me what the IR camera does and how to use it, and showed me the various spots in the house that were drafty/losing heat. He went to every room, and allowed me to follow him around, looking at everything. He even let me take a few of my own pictures. We found some areas that were concerning, and we figured out why my addition was so cold. All in all a good experience.

It went very well. He explained exactly what he was doing and where the issues were. Then, I received the comprehensive report which helped prioritize what situation would be the most optimal to address.
