  • I was a tutor that was listed with Provider name locked. for about one year. I would highly recommend that students and tutors STAY AWAY from this company, as it is my belief that they are engaged in unethical and exploitative business practices.
I have a graduate degree and have been in the educational field as a teacher, tutor, and program specialist for nearly 15 years -- and I can say, without reservation, that I have never worked before with such an unethical organization as Provider name locked. in my educational career.
First, they have a pyramid-like commission structure, beginning with the exorbitant rate of 40%, and reduce their commission to 35% after 20 hours of Provider name locked. . This is gradually reduced with the more hours a tutor logs until it is reduced to 20% commission after 400 hours of Provider name locked. :
Hours tutored Provider name locked. service fee %
    0 - 20 40%
    21 - 50 35%
    51 - 200 30%
    201 - 400 25%
    400+ 20%
As a point of reference, one of their competitors whom I have worked with, takelessons.com, charges a commission of 20% from the beginning. If we were to look outside the online Provider name locked. industry into other independent contractor work, we would find commissions of 30% (Taskrabbit), 20% (rideshare companies like Provider name locked. , Lyft, and Sidecar), and 10% (union-franchised talent agents).
When I made inquiries with regard to why the commission was so high, I was told that the commission was needed to pay for marketing, IT, and other expenses. I explained that 40% was much higher than their competitors in the industry, and asked why their expenses necessitated such a high commission. They refused to provide further details.
I continued to provide Provider name locked. services through Provider name locked. , and I reached 20 hours of service, upon which the commission was reduced to 35%. My ratings were excellent (5 of 5 stars), and the comments I received from students were outstanding.
Then last month I received an email from the "Profile Review Team" which stated the following:
"A routine review of tutor profiles listed on Provider name locked. .com brought your account to our attention. We have concluded that the Provider name locked. platform is not the best fit for your Provider name locked. business, and we have elected to remove your profile from our active directory."
I also found that I was no longer able to log in to my account. I replied to the message and asked why my profile was removed. I received the following response:
"According to our records, you were unable to successfully use the Provider name locked. platform to secure and maintain lasting relationships with students through our website. We understand that our platform is effective in different ways for different tutors, and we review and sometimes remove profiles based on what we believe provides the best opportunities to potential students and our marketplace. The decision to keep your profile closed will stand."
Needless to say, I was quite puzzled by this response. I replied with an explanation that I received excellent ratings and reviews, and that many of my students had stopped Provider name locked. due to reasons that were not in my control. For example, two students had to return to their respective countries (I teach English as a Second Language); one student owned a convenience store while he was going to business school, and could not afford the time or money to continue Provider name locked. with me; another student was a Provider name locked. and her schedule became increasingly difficult, as she was looking for a new place to live with her husband.
    I received the response below:
"The decision to remove your profile from our directory was made in accordance with our terms and conditions. Provider name locked. considers this decision to be final and a representative will not be made available to further discuss this matter."
I can say without a doubt that I have never been treated so disrespectfully by any organization in my educational career. To make the decision to remove a tutor's profile, with no warning, and then refusing to even discuss the matter, is nothing short of outrageous.
As is documented here and elsewhere, they have taken similar actions with other tutors, refusing to provide a detailed explanation and refusing to discuss the matter. As I stated earlier, their commission structure is exhorbitantly high for tutors who are new to the system, starting with 40% and only going down to 20% after completing 400 hours. I therefore can't help but wonder if the removal of tutors' profiles is related to keeping the number of tutors who earn higher rates at a low level so that Provider name locked. can collect the highest commissions possible on their remaining tutors. At the least, it is exploitative and unethical.
The response provided by Provider name locked. does not provide specific details or explanation. Provider name locked. claims that my profile was removed in accordance with the terms of use; however, Provider name locked. has refused to provide any supporting information, and has flatly refused to discuss the issue with me further.
In addition, I have researched what other tutors have written publicly with regard to Provider name locked. 's business practices, and have observed that this sudden deletion of tutor profiles appears to be part of a pattern - tutors achieve a certain number of Provider name locked. hours to lower their commission rate and begin earning more, and soon find their profiles removed with little in the way of explanation or specific criteria or other details. This raises questions as to whether Provider name locked. terminates tutors who have achieved a higher take-home rate in order to maximize their own commission.
I filed a complaint against Provider name locked. with the Better Business Bureau requesting the following items:
    1) Data which indicates how my student retention rates compared with tutors in the same discipline in the same metro area; 2) Provider name locked. standards that used in determining how a tutor is flagged for profile review and deletion; 3) a full and complete explanation as to why my profile was flagged and deleted, with supporting evidence and data, and without warning; 4) a full and complete report on my ratings and comments from students; 5) a reinstatement of my profile or a refund the commission I paid to Provider name locked. in full.
Provider name locked. continues its refusal to provide such information, and refuses to even discuss the matter with me.
Based on this, I have come to the conclusion that it is Provider name locked. 's practice to delete the profiles of tutors before their commission is reduced in order to maximize their profits. It is my belief that they are engaged in unethical business practices, and that I would highly discourage tutors and students from using Provider name locked.

  • So far it has been good. Mostly we use her 2 times a week, but now she comes once a week for an hour and a half. She has come to our home with the exception of meeting at the library once. We have definitely seen some progress. She has been on time and everything is going well so far.

And they found five different scholarships for my Provider name locked. to apply to! This really helped.
