Deck Building reviews in Chicago

Bob and his crew installed a Trex deck and Rainescape drainage system at our townhouse in the Spring of 2018. They demoed our existing deck and replaced with a new deck in a larger footprint. Bob was in touch with us throughout the process and the majority of the work was completed within a week. The team completing the work were efficient and were clearly deck building pros. I did get the impression this was their first time installing a Trex Rainescape system but they appear to have installed it properly and it functions well after seven months of use. We did have a miscommunication on the scope of work that I wanted as far as the specific finish and function on the underside of the deck. The Rainescape system provides for water to be diverted into a gutter and drained away from the deck allowing for the underside of the deck to be a dry area even during rain events. Bob and I had to re-work the scope and he utilized a different vendor (also a total pro) to hang the gutter and finish the underside of the deck with wood. This led to a higher than anticipated cost for the project but the final product was great and exactly what we wanted. Bob was easy to work with but I would just caution that you understand and articulate exactly how you want your deck to look upon completion. We were doing something that was a little different from the scope of a typical deck install and that was a speed bump in our job. I would definitely use Bob again and thought he did a very good job.

DAL did a great job on my new rooftop deck. The guys worked hard, were very professional, and finished on time and on budget. I will say they were not the cheapest source, but sometimes you get what you pay for.

We redid our backyard with two contractors - a landscaper / hardscaper, and Bob Schmalz / Premier, the latter of whom completed the porch work. Designs were rendered by the landscaper / hardscaper, and are included below. While the porch is undoubtedly structurally sound, I do feel in hindsight there were multiple instances when Bob could and should have alerted us “heads up, you should be aware that visually, this, this and this may look funky”.   Examples: • the fact that the porch is crooked both north/south, and east/west against both the house and the hardscape. decking was laid TOWARD the house instead of AWAY from the house - end result was essentially a triangular “shim” against the screen door • the fact that the east railing was not positioned where drawn - this was communicated, and ignored (shown in photos - east railing was supposed to hit mark on wall indicated by red arrow) • the framing extension sticking out of the east side of the porch - not discussed, should have been alerted (see photo, indicated by red arrow) • the beveled railing, which is narrower than the base to which it is attached (?), and the railing ends, which reveal a channel / hole - how could Bob think to not alert us to this in advance? finished product looks sloppy / awkward. The bottom line is that it’s incredibly disappointing when the first thing people say upon seeing the porch is “oh, it’s crooked”.  This could have been avoided, the railing could have been built per drawing and discussion, etc. In addition, the project, which I was told would take a week, was drawn out over two months.   There are migrant children dying at our borders - yes my concerns are infinitesimal in the grand scheme - but most contractors approach their work with a “let’s make the customer feel good about the end product” attitude. Bob, instead, basically shrugged shoulders, and said “it is what it is”. I would characterize his communication skills as deficient at best, negligent at worst. When I brought up the above set of concerns, Bob threatened legal action. I have now paid in full, as life is too short, and we have no time for or interest in a protracted battle. But, we have a crooked porch.

I am so impressed with Dominic and his company, Red Sky Painting. I reached out to several companies when I was looking for someone to paint my new apartment, and he responded immediately. With every meeting we had, he arrived early or on time, was professional and courteous. The team painted my entire 3 bedroom/2 bath apartment and finished two days earlier than expected. The work was impeccable and at a fair price. When I learned they also did deck work and exterior painting, I knew this was the only company I would hire in the future. HIGHLY recommend!

We hired SItko to remove our old wooden front stairs and porch railings and replace them with new synthetic material. We solicited 3 proposals and selected Sitko for the work. The price was in line with what we expected, and we signed the contract in late May. At the time the contract was signed we were told work would start in 2-3 weeks. After the initial deposit was sent via Quickpay, Michael stopped responding to my inquiries. I began to make preparations for legal recourse under the assumption that my deposit had been stolen and work would never start. Finally I heard back and was told that work would begin at the end of June. During the project, the team left material in our front yard and damaged the lawn which was unable to be repaired. The craftsmanship of the work was also quite poor. Connections for railing to the support posts were poor, and a piece of siding was patched with siding that did not match the color (see photos). I contacted Michael about the poor workmanship on July 13th. There was no response, though I was presented with a final invoice and asked to remit prompt payment. After a period of 8 weeks I received a message the morning of September 24th saying that someone would be out to make repairs that day (no advanced notice). The repairs of the work are still lackluster (the "repair" for the poorly connected railing was to put white caulk around the connection...). Overall, this was a very poor experience.

I couldn’t be happier with the work Nate and his crew did. From the design process to the final install, I was kept in the loop every step of the way. Not only did they start earlier than expected, I also couldn’t have imagined it would have looked as good as it does! The crew came promptly at 7am and I don’t think I ever seen them take a break. It was a 2-day job but after the first day, you couldn’t even tell anyone was there. All the material and tools were neatly put away and everything was cleaned up even though they were coming back the next morning. The job was finished on time and more importantly, on budget, with no surprises! I even got quotes from 3 other contractors and the Deck Company was not only the cheapest but the highest rated. After the job was complete, Nate walked me through everything that was done and had the crew waiting to ensure I liked every little detail. You can’t put a price on piece of mind and knowing that you’re in the best hands. Much thanks again to Nate and the Deck Company for making it all possible! Highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality workmanship.

I'm the president of an 8 unit condo building and I used Chicagoland Deck to power wash and seal the one common deck and 8 private decks in my building, and I could not be happier with the experience. First off, the estimate I obtained from them - in the fall of 2017 - was half that of a competitor, so they had my attention right there. While I delayed in accepting the bid until June of 2018, they still honored the original estimate. Which was pretty cool of them. Because these guys are popular and kind of a big deal, they weren't able to come out until October, but they were still able to fit us in despite that rainy rainy month. They clearly communicated their schedule by email, first two weeks in advance, then a week in advance, so that I was able to wrangle my fellow owners to be available to provide deck access. The crew was friendly, professional, enthusiastic, and delivered great results. The decks had not been cleaned and sealed in 5 years and they turned some sickly looking wood into healthy, glowing "did you just spend a week at the beach?" bronzed beauties. I was dazzled, and will definitely be giving them a call in another 5 years when our decks once again need to be gussied up for their close-ups.

Mr. Porch build our "Chicago Deck" for a two flat in the Lincoln Square area of Chicago. The project was completed in August of 2018. As a result of this project we would recommend Mr. Porch to anyone seeking a new deck build, particularly one requiring demolition. We received a solid build, a fair price, and a very good experience overall. Mr. Porch was willing and able to schedule most work while we were out of town, they handled architecture, permitting, a tricky in-place demolition project, and they successfully utilized an existing roof to save us construction cost. This company is big enough to schedule a job exactly when you need them but small enough that interactions are friendly, employees remember you and your project, and the owner is available to customers with little delay. We had a number of follow up calls from them asking if everything was OK, they met with the inspector for us and assured that the porch passed permitting. The actual construction crew was friendly, sensitive to the noise level, and very respectful of our neighbors. I recommend this company and we will return to Mr. Porch for future projects.

Greg Rentschler and team were great. He came out quickly to quote our job. The work Timberseal did was fantastic. They power washed all our exterior decks and siding on our house. Then they stained and sealed all our decks and dock. Finished product is wonderful. Only minor complaint was that the work was quoted to be done in mid September (on August 2nd) and the work was not completed until the last week of October. BUT, it was done in an area of Indiana where its impossible to find contractors to do work let alone good quality work. Thanks Timberseal!
