Upholstery reviews in Austin

I was satisfied. She's excellent at what she does. I've referred her several times and I  don't do that unless they're good. She's very reasonable price wise and even does her own pick up service. If you want superior work done at a decent price definitely go see her.

It went great. Very pleased with the Alvarez' skillful work. And, as a bonus, they are extremely pleasant and reliable. Just great folks to work with! Hope they will be around for awhile, as we look forward to to using them in the future.

The Alvarez's contacted me quickly and set me up with a date range to begin the repairs.  The final costs were spot on the estimate.  Jim found some mechanical problems that I was not aware of and repaired them at a small extra cost.  It is a small professional shop surrounded by work that he is working on.  I would recommend him to anyone.

The work was done beautifully. The gimp chosen blended nicely with the colors of the top.  The cushioning added is very soft and bulges up a bit above the stool for added comfort.  I just thought the price was a bit high.

We so wanted to like this company. We went in on a Saturday and brought in one of our dining chairs with us to get an estimate on the cost of recovering all 7 of them.  The two employees there were friendly and helpful and there were nice samples of their work in the store. We picked out a fabric that, according to their price listing, was $35.90/yard. I quickly calculated an estimate for the labor, fabric, and foam, but the employee said that she couldn't give us an "official" bid until Tuesday. Having quickly calculated the estimate on the spot ourselves, we were confident that the "official" bid would be about $898 and that seemed a reasonable price for recovering 7 dining chairs and we decided to leave the dining chair we brought with us because we figured we would probably accept the "official" bid.
As promised, we received the official bid by email on Tuesday, but the cost was $1,206.99, much higher than expected. The employee wanted to charge us $74/yard of fabric rather than $35.90/yard.   She also asked for photos of my chairs, which was odd because I had left the chair there so that she could draft her "official" bid. I had to remind her that the chair was there.
Not at all satisfied with this "official" bid, I did a very quick search of the fabric online and found the fabric on sale on several sites for as low as $28.72/yard. So, I went back to Spruce today and said that I wanted to retrieve my chair and explained that we would still consider having our chairs recovered by them, but if so, the bid would need to be redone because the bid for the fabric was more than double the price listed in the fabric swatch book.
One of the employees who had been there on Saturday and helped us with the fabric remembered that the price was definitely not $74/yard. We eventually found the fabric swatch book and found that the price was, indeed, listed as $35.90/yard.  The other employee there (not the same one who helped us that Saturday) then looked up the price online and said that the fabric had increased in price to $37/yard.  I mentioned that I had found it online for as low as $28.72/yard and asked whether I could buy the fabric myself and bring it in for them to use.  She said "Yes, but we'll have to charge you $7.50/yard." This, I think, is very unreasonable.
Given the negative experience we had with the bid, one would think that a good business practice would be to offer to forego the $7.50/yard fee for bringing in one's own fabric, if not some other discount. Nothing of the kind was offered, so we will be looking elsewhere for reupholstery.
Buyer beware!  Be sure to do your own calculations and scrutinize your bid from Spruce!

It went very well.  He was very knowledgeable and helpful. He is doing more work for me.
I paid $65 per chair.  This job was to cut off the cushion itself  because it protruded too much in front.  It was
    not to remove stuffing.

It went great. We'd just previously sent out 2 expensive pieces for recovering at a competitor who charged more than double for work that was less than satisfactory. I only wish I'd found Cardenas when I was searching over a year ago for reliable upholsterers, but for some reason they didn't show up in my search. I think this is the guy who'd done some great work for a friend previously, based on the location of the shop and the enthusiasm of the prioprietor. I look forward to using Cardenas for all our upholstering needs for years to come.

This was the top-rated upholsterer in town at the time I searched for a reliable upholsterer. The owners previously taught at Austin Community College and they still teach upholstering in their studio. I wanted the best quality to recover my classic furniture, and I had invested in very expensive fabric ($120/yd) for the sofa. I sent out the sofa first, as they could only handle 1 piece of furniture at a time. It took 7 months for return of the sofa. They retied all the springs and evaluated the cushion material. They said the inside cushion material didn't need replacing, so I was fine with their simply recovering the cushions. The quality of the work is good except for the cushions, which are smaller than they were when I sent them out. This means the 2 cushions separate in the middle, leaving a gap which is uncomfortable and unattractive, which they didn't do previously. I haven't complained because I don't have enough of the fabric left to ask them to redo the sofa, and anyway, I can't go 7 months again without it. I sent out the chaise longue for reupholstering on the day the sofa was delivered, and I didn't notice the issue with the sofa cushions being too small and not tight together before I sent out the chaise. The chaise also is upholstered nicely but it is hard, when previously it was soft. It only took about 6 months for the chaise to be recovered. The primary reason I rate the service less than satisfactory is because of the really expensive price I paid--over $3,000 for the 2 pieces for the work only (I had special ordered the fabric and am not including the price of the fabric). I have since sent out other furniture to a different upholsterer for half the price and with much better results.

Dave Spitz at Rivertown Interiors is a treasure. He responded to my initial email query with a phone call, and helped guide me thru the project. He picked the chairs up on schedule, and delivered them back a few days ahead of schedule. Pricing was per his original estimate. The quality of the work is superb. I expect to get another ten years of comfortable service from these chairs. I highly recommend Rivertown Interiors, and I will definitely use them again.

They are thoroughly professional, helpful, and friendly at every step. I got in touch by phone. Shirley gave me her email address so I could send photos of the couch. I had side and front pictures and the dimensions. From that, she was able to give me an estimate and tell me how much fabric to buy. She advised me about a good fabric for a house with dogs (microfiber microsuede.)

They're busy, so I had to get on their calendar. They booked me for about a month after my call. We kept in touch by email; for example, I let Shirley know when the fabric arrived. I wrote again the last week of October to see if we could fix a date, which we did. They came and picked up the couch on a Wednesday. It was ready a week and a half later. And it's lovely; I'm delighted with the results.

I did my comparison shopping and found that while Alvarez seemed to be the highest bid, their bid included pick-up and delivery. Other outfits left that to me to arrange -- most movers have a minimum, so that could be as much as $150. Other outfits also estimated more fabric, which, at $30/yard, adds up pretty fast.

All in all, I couldn't be happier. Alvarez Upholstery is highly recommended.
