Asphalt Paving reviews in Asheville

Jerry's Paving Service & Asphalt Coating
So far, so good. At this point I'm reviewing the responsiveness and business part of the job. More to come when both phases of work complete- the prep to the existing old driveway(s) and the asphalt paving. I got a recommendation for Jerry's Paving Service on NextDoor praising his work and price based on 3 other quotes so I gave Jerry Dockery a call with only two days notice- 828-299-1916. I told him I was only available to meet him at my part time home in Asheville this past weekend. He was only too glad to do it. He came out both Saturday and Sunday as we worked through the deal. I have a fairly sizable amount of paving to be done plus very old stone driveways that need a lot of attention, one with a hill, and Jerry did his best and worked within my budget. The work will start tomorrow which is pretty close to immediately, for all of the cutting, grading, digging, stone application plus rolling. He has committed to the actual paving before the end of this month and that is mostly dependent on sustained warmer temperatures. So, so far, I can recommend Jerry for an incredibly quick response time and turnaround in getting this job estimated and negotiated. I will continue this review or submit a new review after the prep work is finished tomorrow with my comments plus after the paving is finished with my comments. Stay tuned.

If you are not a DOT job, don't bother with this company! They have failed to complete the agreed upon work in a timely manner. It's costing me money and hurting my business. This paving company was subcontracted by my grader on a multi home construction project. They quoted the job probably about a year and a half ago, knowing that they would be informed when the homes were complete and they could come in to pave the road and driveways. They were informed shortly before July 18th 2018 that we were ready for the paving to be done. I expected to wait a couple of weeks for an opening but since we had been on their radar for quite some time, I expected they would fit me in sooner than the 4-6 weeks paving companies in the area generally give as a timeline with new quotes. It is ONE DAY job! I was dealing with Mike. He would tell me "next week" or "probably this weekend" over and over again. On August 8th I had a phone conversation with Mike. I was beginning to get impatient and told him I just needed him to be honest about when they could do it and if it was too small of a job for them and they weren't really wanting to, to just let me know so I could move on and find another company. He assured me they were up to the job and told me 4 weeks as a firm timeline. For the next 3 weeks I called him one a week to confirm we were still on schedule. Each time I was told that we were. He would also tell me the same things as before- "we might be able to squeeze you in this weekend", "maybe next week" etc. The week it was supposed to be done, he wouldn't answer my calls or return my texts. Week 5 of the 4 week timeline I finally got a hold of him again. He started going on about DOT jobs and putting me off indefinitely. Then I got angry and told him he was really screwing me up because I can't sell these houses until the road is paved, and he had told me 4 weeks firm, etc. He said he would talk to his boss and do his best to get it done asap. This was September 12th or 13th. On October 24th I sent him a text saying that he had not responded to my recent attempts at contact and that if it wasn't done by the following week I would be filing a complaint with the BBB. I got a call from Jeff the owner of the company the next day. He was rude at first but when I told him all the times Mike had promised me it would be done, he said he didn't know that and relented a bit. He said they were on a DOT job that would be done the following Tuesday and asked me to call him then. I did. He said probably by Friday that week they could do mine. Asked me to call him then. I did. Again he put me off. He has not responded to my last couple of attempts at contact so here we are. I have also filed a better business bureau complaint.

Jerry's Paving Service & Asphalt Coating
They told me estimates are done on Saturday. Lady called me Friday and said she would be at the location 11:30 to 12:30. I asked he to call me when she was 5 to 10 minutes away so I could meet her (It was a rental property very close to my home). She also had the address of the property. Never heard from her. I contacted them the Monday after and asked what had happened to her. I never got an answer. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!

    Soderquist Builders
Estimate changed dramatically, had to have an engineer, etc. $30000. Told him of my concern about bringing heavy equipment onto lawn, driveway. Driveway badly damaged. Charged for repair of driveway. Despite dozens of emails, phone calls and promises, he never returned to repair driveway he had been paid to repair and that he damaged. Retaining Wall started and completed late although he agreed several month ahead of time to complete the job on time due to this being a rental property, he started a month late, had not applied for permits, etc, which he now said he needed. That is when price went up $20,000. He worked a couple of hours a day and finally 3 weeks later found someone to do work who said Soderquiest had not planned nor had anyone to do the job.

Jerry's Paving Service & Asphalt Coating
Jerry showed up the first day and dropped off their equipment and worked about 1 hour. When he was ready to leave he asked for a check. The next day Jerry never came back to see or check on his workers. Before they left they asked for a check. It rained so they came back a few day later and sealed the older parts if the driveway. The following day I checked the driveway and they didn't fill the cracks in the driveway. I calked Jerry 2 times and left him messages he didn't return my calls.I called again and he answered and i told him they didn't fill the cracks and he said they did. I looked at the driveway a couple if days later and noticed some of the cracks were filled They only filled about half of the cracks and it was done poorly. I never I never heard anything more from Jerry. They were supposed to fill the cracks first then seal the driveway they did it backwards. I still have unfilled cracks that i paid Jerry to fix. Most if Jerry's good reviews are actually for his father Jerry Sr who passed away in 2016 not for Jerry Jr. Also Jerry's workers rushed the job and the asphalt was not compacted correctly and it left a lot of ruff patches on the driveway that are crumbling off.I asked his workers about this and they said they weren't sure why it happened but said it will give u more traction on the driveway. It was either not compacted correctly or the asphalt was too cold either way it wasn't done correctly and isn't smooth like it should be.

    Tarheel Paving
As with another reviewer, Corey was part of the problem. Our job kept getting pushed back for "commercial" work. Then he was not truthful about the cost of stamping and painting a portion of the asphalt, and then company refused to provide compensation for work not done. Tarheel also failed to grade the driveway properly so that we now have water running off the side of the driveway (never did this before), and digging a canal that will eventually erode the driveway. Company refused to address the issue.

    Gibson's Grading And Construction
Very well. David Gibson began the project as promised and completed it on time and on budget. We're pleased with the quality of his work and with his responsiveness and professionalism. We recommend Gibson Grading and Construction to others in the Asheville area.

    Appalachian Paving and Concrete Inc
I received a dismissive response from someone in their office. "Thank you for your email requesting an estimate for your driveway. Unfortunately, we are completely booked through the summer 2017. Due to our overloaded schedule, we are unable to provide any estimates at this time. I apologize for any inconvenience and regret that we are unable to assist you with your project. If you should require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. Have a wonderful day!" Seriously what kind of company can't be bothered to let a potential client have the option of a future estimate. In our case we weren't in a hurry at all. However, this company doesn't care at all. They are lucky. We received their contact from Asheville's largest realty group. I have since shared my experience with the principals of that firm and was assured that Appalachian will no longer be recommended. A tragic simple customer service failure.

    Calloway Contracting
Jim Calloway presented himself as very friendly when he was bidding on the work. After I told him I wanted to proceed, he showed up with a contract and informed me just before I signed that it would be a limited warranty because he did not prepare the base. He would not go into detail about what that meant he would cover, and I was a little put off, but frankly he was the only one in town available to do the work this year, (and now I know why) and his ratings on Angie's list gave me some comfort that this would turn out ok. Boy, was I wrong. Jim showed up as scheduled and seemed to be doing ok, but by the end of the day he seemed to be very anxious to wrap up and leave. I noticed the curb he put in place on one side of the driveway was only about 2" high for most of the approximately 200' run and brought it to his attention. Our contract specified that the curb be 4" high or more. Jim argued with me that it was 4" to 6" high, but I put a level on it and it was 2" or less in most areas. He finally agreed to build up a 25' section that was the most critical to channeling water away from the down hill slope on that side of the driveway. He hurriedly had his crew throw some more material on top and tamp it down, but his effort was still short of the contract. It was clear he was done and was going to leave and didn't care much about meeting the terms of our contract. I finally told him I would observe it and call him back if I still had a water issue. About 2 or 3 months later we had our first snow. I had invested $12,000 in this driveway and cautiously hand shoveled it. When I got near the road I hit a spot where the asphalt started coming up. I stopped shoveling that area. After the snow melted I called Jim and told him I wanted to meet with him to go over the condition of the driveway surface, which in addition to the spot coming up, several other areas were also rough. After not hearing from him for a couple of weeks I called him and he said he had "already been out to look at the driveway ." He did this without my knowledge and made no effort to contact me to tell me what he had found. He refused to meet with me. I had also consulted with another professional and he agreed the surface was not well finished, and suggested two alternatives to fix it - One, to heat the asphalt and re-roll it or two, have the driveway sealed. I brought up both alternative with Jim and he refused to do either. He said the driveway turned out well but did offer to fix the one area near the road that had gravel broke loose on the surface. He would come out in the spring to patch that area. In the meantime, a crack had developed at the interface of the old pavement that had been overlaid and the new pavement where he had cut out a section per our contract. To my dismay, there is also grass coming up through the asphalt ( in a driveway that is only 6 months old) and discovered that area had less than an inch of new asphalt over the old. I called Jim and asked him to come out and discuss these issues with me before he scheduled his repair work. Again, he did not call me ahead of time as I had requested, but this time I was home and was able to talk to him. He said he wasn't responsible for grass coming through and tried to show me that we had more than 2" of asphalt in that area. What he was actually counting was the thickness of the old asphalt, which had a very thin layer of new asphalt in that area. He told me to just put some Round-up on it and refused to do anything to fix it. He also said he wasn't responsible for the crack where he cut the old asphalt and blended the surfaces, but offered to put some sealer on it. He would not rework it. When Jim came he brought Jay, who is taking over the business as Jim is retiring. Jay seemed more amenable to talking, but Jim ushered Jay into his truck and left in a huff. I had to stop them from driving away to get a commitment from Jay to do the re-work the first week of June. What he plans to do will help two of the issues, but does not address the overall quality of the product. I will also end up with a patched driveway after spending $12,000 for a new one. I would hope that Jay, the new owner, is more than a little concerned that he is now the owner of a company that has provided such poor quality work and abominable customer service. Given the circumstances of my experience with Calloway Contracting, I would not recommend them to anyone.

Jerry's Paving Service & Asphalt Coating
He came out very quickly to look at the work. Quoted me $750 which I thought was very fair for the work that needed to be done. He did tell me they were very busy but would fit me in and it would be approx. 2 week. I called him after two weeks and he said he would be out in the next week or so. He never should up so I called again and he promised it would be the next Monday. Never showed. I guess it worked out OK because I sold the house without the work being done but I would not call him in the future.
