Is your home ready fo an air duct cleaning?
How important is air duct cleaning? How often should it be done? Is it worth it to pay the extra money to ensure there is no mold in the air ducts?—Angie's List member Glenn Millar
"The importance depends on the individual homeowner," says Josh Lasch, vice president of The Steam Team, a highly rated company that offers air duct cleaning service in Austin. Factors that typically lead homeowners to get their ducts cleaned include pets, allergies and excessive dust from recently completed remodeling work.
Ken Moncebaiz, owner of highly rated K & M Steam Cleaning, which also offers duct-cleaning services in Austin, says how frequently the ducts are cleaned is also relative. "The normal frequency is every five to 10 years, but someone with allergies may have them cleaned every two years," he says.
According to Lasch, paying extra for treatments that eliminate biological contaminants can ensure a cleaner duct system overall. "I recommend applying Environmental Protection Agency-approved agents," he says. "They'll reduce any molds, bacteria or allergens that the duct cleaning may miss."
He also advises homeowners to be wary of companies that offer extremely low rates. "For the typical 2,000-square-foot home, homeowners should expect to pay $300 to $600," Lasch says. "To effectively clean a whole house for $99 is not possible."
