Worst St. Louis Contractors of 2010
Homefront Roofing | St. Louis
James Ransom says he's still trying to save up money to fix his hail-damaged roof after Homefront Roofing took his $4,500 insurance check but never started work. "I'd like to get some of the money they've taken from me and finish my house," Ransom says. He says he now has interior damage from the leaky roof.
Many Homefront customers in the St. Louis area and other states had similar grievances. Attorneys general in Missouri and Colorado received complaints against Homefront and company owner Ron Berglund, alleging shoddy work and failure to deliver services, and civil cases are pending against him in Colorado.
Homefront has an F on Angie's List based on a complaint in the Dallas area and a notice alerting members that it's out of business.
Berglund's attorney wrote Angie's List Magazine with the following response: "Because Homefront has no ability to pay its contractors or suppliers, they have pulled out of every active project," says Eric B. Fenster. "We hope to accommodate aggrieved parties in the fairest manner possible."
Wholesale Lawn & Landscape | Crestwood, Mo.
Dallas Fleming gave an $850 deposit to Wholesale Lawn & Landscape owner Matt Buckingham for landscaping and patio wall repairs. "He took our deposit and never showed up for work," Fleming says. In early 2010, Fleming says he called the local police to get his money back, which he was able to do without filing an official complaint.
Wholesale Lawn has an F on Angie's List, and another business owned by Buckingham - Buckingham Lawn & Landscape - rates a C and is the subject of an unresolved Penalty Box dispute over allegedly shoddy work that resulted in a notice to alert members.
The Missouri attorney general's office recorded four unresolved complaints for businesses associated with Buckingham. The business and home phone numbers for Buckingham are out of service.
