Worst Denver Contractors of 2010

Homefront Quality Roofing | Littleton, Colo.

David Monahan of Broomfield says Homefront Quality Roofing kept postponing work once he gave the company a $12,000 check. After many delays, he says he realized work wasn't going to start. "I felt aggravated," he says. "I had to get the roof fixed because I have a leak!"

Consumer complaints filed with Angie's List, the Colorado attorney general and BBB claim owner Ron Berglund took down payments and cashed insurance checks but failed to complete or even start jobs. Other complaints accuse the company of shoddy work. Customers in Texas and Missouri allege similar offenses. Many civil suits against Berglund are pending in Colorado, where roofing contractors aren't licensed.

Berglund's attorney wrote this response to Angie's List Magazine: "Because Homefront has no ability to pay its contractors or suppliers, they have pulled out of every active project," says Eric B. Fenster. "We hope to accommodate aggrieved parties in the fairest manner possible."

Homefront has a notice on Angie's List to alert members it's out of business.

Richard Lett/RWL Contracting Services | Louisville, Colo.

Alana Linton of Louisville thought she could trust her neighbor Richard Lett when he approached her about doing $3,600 in home repairs. "He didn't know what he was doing," she says. "He drilled my cabinets into a water pipe, which caused damage. Then, he stopped showing up. The man is a scam artist."

Linton says she tried confronting Lett, but he'd been evicted from his home.

As of press time, Lett advertised handyman services, which don't require licensing, on Craigslist and has allegedly failed to complete or start work for dozens of Denver-area residents; several civil judgments have been issued against him. He also pleaded guilty to felony theft and fraud charges in 2007 related to a Ponzi scheme, and paid $10,000 in restitution and served 45 days in jail. He's on probation for 10 years.

A notice on Angie's List alerts members to his felony conviction. Lett's last-known phone number is disconnected, but he's thought to still be in the area as new complaints continue to appear online.
