Who do you Call to Cut a Window in a Brick Wall

3 pros!
Question by bmeeks: who do you call to cut a window in a brick wall in Arlington, Texas
Answered by LCD: General Contractor - or a Window contractor to frame out and isntall the window, though I would REQUIRE that the actual opening and reinvorcement of the brick be done by a Masonry contractor in either case - a LOT of brick homes get cracking or even patial failure of walls by amateurs cutting window/door openings without properly supporting it during the cutting and reinforcing it (usually with structural steel channel for all but quite small window).
NOte - if fake brick (actylic or latex or fiberglass or such) then the window contractor should be able to cut it fine - it is just real brick tht you need a mason for.
If doing it yourself, then just the Masonry contractor would be what you need - to cut and to install the rough framing support (be sure to get the location and dimensions right the first time - including making sure it is marked out the right height off floor, right way up (all too common to get the rough opening cut with the long dimension the wrong way, especially if the window unit is orineted unusually), and don't forget the necessary clearance between the inside of the rough opening framing and the window outer frame - all to common not to leave the gap or to forget the thickness of the rough opening framing, etc. Usually not catastrophic in studwall openings unless cut overlarge, but more expensive to recut an opening in brick, and of course get too large and you will end up(usually) with mismatched brick or grossly oversized brickmold to cover the mistake.
A hint - have him salvage and give you the bricks from the opening, in case you need to do a small brick repair in the future.
